New Panasonic 4k camcorders

But will it do 10bit 4:2:2? Sorry, couldn't resist... :)

I don't think the 180 will be quite that close to the DVX200, if only because of the 1" and not m4/3 sensor, and associated lens headaches. I'm guessing (and it's only a guess) street price at release would probably be $3,800 and $3,200USD, respectively. My guess coming from the fact that the UX90 looks like it's a competitor to the PXW-Z150, which is about $3,200 right now.

One thing I find interesting, is if they employ the same center-crop trick the DVX200 uses, they effectively become about 30x and 22x lenses in HD. Could be a big deal for event shooters and sports productions.

The French dude says "below $4 and below $3" (thousands). My guess is $3,500 and $2,700.

If it's a BSI sensor, then run-n-gun and concert/night club type of recordings should work well enough. If it's the same sensor as in their FZ line, then ... one may as well stick with the FZ line.

But I don't expect much from the codec either way.

Considering the specs on the z150 are nearly identical, but with 10bit 4:2:2, I should hope the UX90 sells for ~$500 less to remain competitive. And a 1" camera with effective 30x lens (assuming it will center crop in HD) and BNC out for ~$3,500 is going to pique the interest of a lot of small and medium sized live event companies.

I've actually been quite happy with the DVX200 codecs when not using V-Log. If you don't need any more than light color correction, the 50mbps and 4k 100mbps are really quite good. And the ~4gb file limit is gone. V-Log shows all of it's weaknesses though, and I think I'm going to avoid it as much as possible without my Ninja Blade.

4k60p, if it comes a little lighter, smaller, and [frame-] wider than the dvx200, and with better sensitivity than the x1000, is going to be very interesting to me. I don't need the 30x, and I worry about how the 60p is going to be managed (oh please, something that works for full-stage recordings) but the camera has definitely risen to the top of the interest list for now. I guess we'll see in six months.

Nice to see these new cameras from Panasonic. 1 inch sensor is a good size for event shooters: not so large that it is hard to nail focus, but not so small that the image quality suffers. And with 4k60p and a 20x zoom, if it comes in at a reasonable price, the UX180 could be a very attractive package.

While there are a lot of compact cameras that shoot 4k30p, there are relatively few that can do 4k60p right now. I wonder if Sony will respond with a higher end version of the PXW-Z150 that can do 4k60p.

Top of the list for me too.

a big spec consideration between these and the z150 will be how fast the lenses are. while i doubt they will be a constant max aperture, if they did manage a 2.8 or faster constant, that would be a big plus over the z150's narrower and relatively slow range.

I was thinking the DVX200 would be a good replacement to an aging EX1, though the short lens is the biggest drawback for events where you're stuck at the back of the room.

These two cameras have my interest w/ the longer zoom range. Though I agree with Darren, a big factor is if (or how much) the lens stays open as you zoom.

Yeah, I want to know how fast the lens is throughout the range. This could be very good for event video if it lets in enough light.

Consider me intrigued.

I've done a couple of events with the DVX200, and the way around this is, assuming you're delivering in 1080p, is to either use the in camear center crop feature, which makes it effectively a 19x zoom, or shoot 4k, and crop in post. I've done both, with no loss of resolution.

Of course, if you need to deliver in 4k, you're hosed, and the UX180 is a better option.

I think I know what to replace my HC-X1000 with now! I been having problems with mine from dirt on the sensor, iris stepping, and low sensitivity.

UX180 is higher speced than the HC-X1000 and the UX90 is lower speced than the HC-X1000. I'll likely go for the UX180.
