New P2 Log software for Macintosh users

In p2 Log when you select the clip, does it say 50 fps in the bottom right of the window.
I would hate to be wrong about this, but I mostly use the PN mode with my P2 cards :-)
Anders:

Regarding removing duplicate frames, I'm referring to 720P24, not 50 fps. In the bottom corner of my frame P2 Log reads "59.94 FPS". Am I to understand that P2 Log removes duplicate frames from 50FPS and not 60FPS?

Thanks.

Sorry, wanted to ask if it read 59.94 or 23.976....

I just tested again, 720p50 and 720p25 at 25 fps recorded to my P2 cards both show up as 25 fps in P2 log, and the duplicate frames are indeed gone when exported to FCP.

Anders:

I am using the FS-100 Firestore, so I can't use the PN mode. The response I just recieved from the techs at Imagine was that they do support the frame removal for 50FPS - 25FPS, but not 60FPS - 24FPS. This is very unfortunate because it renders the P2 Log useless for all of us who use a Firestore and shoot 720 24P - if we did use it, we would be giving up almost 3 times more hard drive space/data rate than is needed. Kind of a bumber in that it seemed like a comprehesive solution.

Hey Suede.
Ok, so that's why, bummer.

I didn't mean 720pn25 but 720p25. 720pn25 of cause works as expected.

Did they give any reason why they haven't implemented frame removal in 720p60 at 24 fps?

Anders:

The people at Imagine gave no reason. Here's there response:

"We only worked on the the 720 footage to help out PAL users. It's something we may look into, but I can't promise when that might happen."

It's unfortunate because if you use Firestore and P2 Log, all your files will be almost 3 times larger than they need to be.

Let me see if I understand this correctly.

P2 Log alows you to change "User Clip Names" according to the manual.
How come when I export to FCP, all the info I logged for a clip is nowhere to be found?

I am using the Demo version so this may be part of the problem. I would like to fully understand how this program is to help "log" my clips.

Thanks

Interesting. I have been using the full version of P2 log to replace the User Clip Name, either by using the autofill clip menu option or replacing the User Clip Names manually, and it comes across into FCP no worries.

I must admit that I have not filled out or checked any of the other meta-data at this point, (other than reel name), but certainly reel name and user clip name come across fine.

OK! Besides having to write down my serial everytime I open the P2 program, I can't open anything! I got it to work once and now I don't even see a preview monitor, etc. When I go to file open P2 volume, etc , its grayed. What the hell am I doing wrong? I'm sure its not that complicated!

anyone here can help me out?

hell, I masterd final cut in less than an hour and this program is taking me almost the entire day!

ok, that sounds like there is something fundamentally wrong with your installation. Best bet would be to shoot the guys at Imagine an e-mail.

To reassure you, it isn't that hard. you shouldn't have to input your serial number every time you open, and you should be able to open a P2 volume no worries.

Cheers

Al

I shot them a email but got no responses yet.

I want to unistall this program but I'm not sure how to. I'm still new to mac's. It's frustrating!

what would be a great way to integrate P2 Genie and p2 Log? Maybe use p2 genie in the field to copy all files to your HDDs. then if one prefers, use p2 log to view or rename or whatever scheme one goes for at the studio/home

anyone thought of an effective process for integrating these apps?

Not to pre-announce anything too soon, but....
My developer build of P2 Genie V. x has a one click "View in P2 Log". It will open the currently selected P2 card from the left column for edit in P2 log:
Picture-7.jpg

You can also register your camera with the metadata device serial number so you can get "Cam A" "Cam B" written back to the card.....and transferred into FCP with P2 log...

And will also feature swift batch conversion automation like this:
http://p2genie.dfmc.dk/p2logbatch.mov

Still it is of cause "work in progress" :-)

NICE. Is this available as a beta? I'm getting p2 Genie on thursday. I'll take it that you've included verify

Good work. Just for CLarity, you mention:

"It will open the currently selected P2 card from the left column for edit in P2 log:"

wouldn;t one just use p2 Genie offload/rename all clips then if one prefers convert the copied files to Qt for FCP?

the quicktime mov shows p2 files with no names (intentional?) thans batch processing the clips (taking p2 log doesn't do this) then off to QT and into FCP

The developer build I have of P2 genie, lets you browse the metadata on all the mounted P2 cards on your system, when you select the one you want to edit the metadata on, you can press "Log" and that card is then opened in P2 log. You can also browse the destination folder for P2 folders and if you click "Log" that folder will open in p2 log.
By Edit I mean "Edit" your metadata.
Verify by comparing MD5 checksums of filedata is also in this developer build. P2 Genie v1.0 for Mac does not verify.

The P2LogBatch is in beta, the current developer version of P2 Genie x is in very rough condition as everything is being rewritten....so might take some time before it will go even beta...

So I guess P2 Log Demo won't let you really try out the "User Clip Names"?

Just trying to see how this app could help me organize my clips better before buying it

Ok so do I have to like "save" my work on all my clips back to the P2 Volume before impoting into FCP?

Nope. You can just output what you want without saving. BUT, if you output for FCP then close P2 volume without saving your changes will of course only be in the FCP XML data, not permanently modified P2 volume.

I think we answered this directly, but for the community...only the first DAY of P2Log sales had a problem connecting to the activation server causing the serial number not to be saved on your computer. We sent out messages to everyone that bought to download again, but obviously that didn't get through.

Today, July 20, we <finally> found a clean work around the activation problem OSX 10.4.7 introduced. Whew! What a pain Apple put us through with that!!

Anyway, anyone having trouble activating the software, or those that bought it but haven't yet installed, simply download fresh via the link provided. Then just enter the serial number ONCE on the first run and that should be that.
