New P2 Log software for Macintosh users

I just bought P2 Log for Mac and it's slowing me down. I'm faster just renaming fields in FCP. I was under the impression that the Auto Fill Clips feature had some intelligence to it other than numeric incremantation. I was hoping I could specify fields in the auto-fill dialog and then the Auto-Fill would grab the data in those fields -- much like their example shows in the manual: Project+Reel+Clip, but it doesn't seem to work this way. Can it do this?

Here's what I would like Auto-Fill to do:

Auto-fill the User Clip Name to the following (I'm using Place Name as FCP's Angle field since P2Log has unfortunately left this out):

Scene No._Place Name_Take No.-Clip Name

The above would result in a user clip name something like this: 04_A_01-000FZ1

If P2Log could do this, it's worth $199, but as it stands I can do this much easier in FCP.

Am I missing something?

Thanks...

I don't think P2 log will do that??
It would seem like you would need to
convert to QT first for FCP to retain the info you want.

I just finished a 3 day shoot using 2 HVX's. I was one
cam op and the P2 tech. The producer was shooting
with the other HVX. We shot about 40 4 gig cards
worth of footage. We also had 2-8 gig cards as
backup in case we got overloaded.
I was able to stay with it and I was training the
producer on the P2 workflow. He had to slow down a bit.
I was shooting about twice as much as he was
and I had a 17" PB and 2-80 gig self powered externals.
I would copy the P2 card...confirm with P2 log (You really need
P2 log if the client wants to see anything, I would only show
them footage that was already copied and confirmed).
At night I would back-up all the days shoot to another
external hard drive and keep going. I will copy all the data
for the producer and he can view everything on his PC using
the Panasonic P2 viewer......

If P2 log doesn't act as well and is as intelligent as FCPs built in logger than it would be quite disappointing indeed. Are people logging with this product and enjoying it? If so, what is the workflow?

Totally unrelated, but let me just give some props to P2 Log. I'm assisting at a fairly large shoot where the shooters haven't used HVXs before, and the editors aren't that experienced with it either. We had a case where one of the shooters pulled a card out before it was done writing, so it resulted in a corrupted clip. We repaired the clip in-camera, but FCP still refused to import it. They went in a panic; I tried a number of things -- it plays in-camera, it plays on the PC, it plays in P2 Viewer so I know the footage is good, right? But still FCP adamantly refused to import it.

Well, we went and downloaded a copy of P2 Log and guess what -- yep, it imported that clip no problem, and exported an FCP-compatible QT movie. P2 Log saved these guys' footage, overcoming a bug in FCP. So for Mac users: if you're using FCP and you have clips that just won't import, give P2 Log a shot!

I simply want to watch the footage I've shot. At the end of the day P2 card dumps will be on an external hard drive, I'm on a Mac, and I don't want to take time to import everything into Final Cut. Is P2 log the best option. $199 is within budget.

Thanks,

Ernie
