New P2 Log software for Macintosh users

Ok so has anyone successfully installed P2 Log on a machine running 10.4.7?
I bought the software yesterday, had to wait overnight for the software because they don't process on-line purchases automatically, so missed any pre time to sort it out. Then it won't authenticate but when I tried emailing tech support, I got a 'mailbox over quota' message about imagine's email. So I've now shot a day and copied the P2 Cards onto a hard drive with no way of knowing if the footage is there or not.

I can only hope that option-clicking dragging a P2 Card onto a hard drive copies it properly and that someone from Imagine empties their inbox.

If anyone can ease my nervousness by confirming I have done the right thing to back up (I also loaded it all on a P2 Store) that would be a great help.

Cheers,

Toby

im sure dan will be back soon.. its a holiday week here in the US ( 4th of July ) so most people are off. option click dragging works.. most of the time :)

It's there. If the folder copied over, all the video is there.

Why would option-drag the files? Just drag them. When you drag any files from one volume to another, they are copied, not moved.

well move and copy are two different things.. if you move them you free up the space on the cards. obviously not the safest route, but the quickest.

Hi Toby,

We are running 10.4.7 with P2 Log successfully.

As we have installed it onto our G5 (and not the Powerbooks) our workflow is thus.

We shoot on location with a Powerbook in tow. When a card is full, we copy it onto the powerbook into a folder (usually called something imaginitive like "Card One")
Once we have finished the shoot, we return the Powerbook to the studio, and connect it as a target disk. We then use P2 log to retrieve, rename & convert the material onto the G5 for editing.

Hope that this helps.

Cheers

Ok well I can now see the footage and the Imagine people were helpful, yay.

I found that I could only get it working when both the dvcprohd AND the dvcprohd50 codecs are installed though. But after sitting here for 48 hours thinking I might have to shoot the clip again, I'm relieved!

Thanks for your advice and support.

Toby

Hi guys,

I am disappointed, maybe by my poor competences...
This is the problem. I shot in 720p 50 and 720pn to test the slow motion effect.
I read all this thread... and find how to import 720p50 in FCP, so my Sequence is 960*720, HD (960*720) pixel ratio, TimeBase 25, Codec DVCPRO HD 720p5. I Downloaded the pass-through codec too, remode the Apple One. And when I read my clips, 1 - I have to render them or I have Artefacts, 2- When I render , FCP play them at real speed and not like slow-mo.
Did I make something wrong ??

A few questions:

1. Will P2 Log remove duplicate frames (shooting 72024p on a firestore)?
2. Will P2 Log allow image flop in some manner (for use with 35mm adaptors such as M2)?

Any response would be appreciated.

PS. Re: Licencing: If the software does its job, I would have no problems purchasing separate licences for all our edit suites.

wysee,
If you shoot off-speed using 25Pn the clips will play back in FCP at 25fps ie slow motion.
If you shoot at 25P then the clips come into FCP at 50fps. You can open the clip with cinema tools and conform the frame rate to 25, then it will play as slow mo.

Suede,
No idea about question 1 but question 2, any editing software will flip or flop your image. P2 Log is just passing the video through, not recompressing it. If it did recompress the footage, that would be bad. (an extra compression is always bad.)

Cheers,

Toby

Yes it will remove duplicate frames from the firestore. Be certain that you have set Recording setup>UB mode to Frm. rate

im new to this, but i have question about the p2log with 720p50 clips

after you import the clips to Mac, will these quicktime files still at 720p50 or its transcoded to 60?

if i will need to send these quicktime files away to another fcp, which currently running a 720p60 project, do i have to bump these 720p50 files into the fcp timeline and export them into 720p60 qt files? will that workable?

i heard about the passthru codec, which looks like it allows you to work with 720p50 file in the fcp 720p60 project (with 720p50 as the sequence compressor). but if the sequences are already set to 720p60 within the project, then when importing 720p50 qt files into the sequence, the fcp will need to render the clips?

cheers for help!

the senario is:

we ve shot smth at varicam 720p60. the production house start working with these footage in fcp with the project set to 720p60.

we need to now shoot smth with a PAL HVX200, which only allows me to shoot at 720p50. i will then need to transfer these files using the p2log and be able to re-export/render these 720p50 clips into 720p60 qt so i can send to the production house.

so in short, i need to find out if p2log actually convert these 720p50 file into 60, or i need to re-render/export in fcp, or i actually cannot do this in either way.

ANDERS:

Thanks for you quick reply. However, after extensive testing, I cannot seem to remove the frames:

1. I acquired a single clip in 720p24 on a FS-100 Firestore (Firestore will not work in PN mode - all clips on Firestore are 60P - HVX200 was in UB Mode Frm Rate).

2. Using P2 Log, I imported the clip onto my G5 (with the DVCPro codec install w/FCP 5.1)

3. The clip ends up being 60 fps. There are no readily apparent options in P2 Log to remove the frames.

4. I was able to remove the duplicate frames when using FCP to import the same clip - no problems.

Am I missing a step here?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Nick

In p2 Log when you select the clip, does it say 50 fps in the bottom right of the window.
I would hate to be wrong about this, but I mostly use the PN mode with my P2 cards :-)

This is really annoying.

I just purchased 2 licenses of P2 Log this morning so I can run it on my MBP on set and on my G5 desktop edit suite when I return from the set. When I purchased the licenses on Imagine's website it didn't warn me that I would have to email my System Profile to them because I run 10.4.7. They were quick to send me serial numbers, but by the time I got back to be able to install the software and discover I have to go through some manual activation process with them it's already after 5pm eastern time and tomorrow is Saturday, and I need it for tomorrow.

So far, it seems Imagine just doesn't have their act together with this. Having to purchase new licenses whenever you change computers is bad enough (every other company out there lets you deactivate a computer and activate another if you need to).

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Dan at imagine said in a post that HDlog desn't have to go through this activation process like P2 log. Since you've shelled out $200 already maybe you can ask for a refund towards HDLOG bronze which is $299. Pay the extra hundred and never have to go through this again. Maybe you can make that happen over the weekend.
When I first heard of P2 log I was glad but then I found out about the activation thing and I said no way. I do not want to go through what i did with some other expensive software that put me through similar hoops which I have since stopped using because of the fustrating activation crap that would occur out of the blue. Couldn't trust it. I can bring up conspiracy theories regarding P2 log but I won't.

flmmkr,

I agree this is really annoying. I had this last weekend. I think Imagine needs to fix the licensing system ASAP. However, as you are in the states, and presumably shooting on an NTSC camera, aren't you able to just use FCP to log?

Cheers,

Toby

I want to be able to view the original MXF files and save them without importing and converting to .mov. FCP doesn't remove the duplicate frames and convert to 23.98 correctly yet, so I'm retaining the original files at least until they have that working right.

I'm using FCP 4.5 and after converting the clip with the p2 log demo and importing into FCP i get large blocks with vertical pixel shift. About 10 vertical bands where the pixels are shifted bigtime. I installed the pass-through codec and changed my sequence settings.
What is going wrong?
