New lenses for GH2 vs older GH1 lenses?

Until just yesterday, I thought that the lenses that were coming out with the GH2 were exactly as the lenses that had already been released for the GH1.

In particular the 14-45mm of the older kit but now I find out the newer kit lens is 14-42mm, are there any other differences? Silent focus, zoom and stepless aperture like the 14-140mm? Is the 14-140mm is still the same lens?

If the kit lenses are different I maybe to rethink which kit I decide to purchase

Just buy body only. And there are some rumors which indicate that panasonic is working on some faster zoom lenses. Probably anounced with the AF100. But you never know.

If you mean to coincide with the delivery of the AF100 (since it's already been announced)...maybe. But one would think they'd have promoted a faster lens in advance to help sales of the camera and build excitement for the lens. After all, delivery of the AF100 is only a couple of months away. Plus any lens that works on the AF100 would almost certainly also work on the GH2 and that cam will be delivered even prior to the AF100 (hopefully).

14-42mm is meh, plastic mount, crappy image...but it's only $99, so I might end up with that lens if I can't get a hold of a body only camera. If you're buying for the first time I'd strongly recommend the 14-140mm, it's a great general purpose lens. For example, the other day I wanted a shot of this ferris wheel, in silhouette, with the sun behind it so as the cars spun they would eclipse the sun...I got my wide, medium, and close coverage with one lens, fast enough that the sun didn't shift so I could use the same angle...being able to just zoom in is very nice, and so is having a lens that you know will work well for many situations, from one-shots to wide landscapes. Shallow DOF (which at 140mm it very much has) and low-light aren't everything.

+1 for the trusty 14-140. Went on a trek to Banff last June and had a Leica 25mm 1.4, Zuiko 35-100 2.0 and the 14-140 in my bag. The 14-140 was on my cam 95% of the time for all the reasons Ben has just stated, plus it has OIS. Which, unfortunately, somehow got turned off, but that's another story.

Banff is so frickin' awesome. Off topic, I know, but I took my GH1 there a few months ago and had a blast. Really only took photos, but used the 14-140, and had great results.

yeah... brighter zoom rumor. official announcement around spring 2011, release around summer, good reviews from lab testing and hands-on experience, paying FULL retail price around fall?

no thanks.

i'd just get a NEW 14-140mm this winter. there r sample variations. i'd examine lens carefully to find any fault.
