New iPad Pro XDR even better

I have noticed Sidecar works better when connected via a USBC cable vs WIFI. I get a bit jerky playback when using WIFI but the cable connection appears to be perfectly smooth. For grading maybe not a big deal but just something to think about.

I find the Sidecar method from FCP to be really clunky right now. It's just a normal viewer wit hthe UI around it and it shares the same viewer with the scopes. Not a great solution at all for FCP users. The same is true when using my 14" XDR MBP as the grading display as well and it sucks. Myself and others have put in feature requests to at the very least split the scopes from the main viewer.

Resolve like most of what they do lately is absolutely solid. I'm really becoming a fan of Resolve. I really don't like the old school timeline concept of editing vs the magnetic timeline in FCP but everything else Resolve does is spot on. Really looking forward to trying out the iPad version of Resolve when it comes out. Seriously I'm very close to moving from FCP. I love FCP and how quickly I can start and finish a project but since I shoot raw with a P4k and use Fusion a lot its really starting to make sense.

Very interesting... thanks for that info!

And yeah, if I could combine FCP's editing approach with Resolve's color tools I'd be very happy. I don't mind editing in Resolve (and enjoy it more than FCP in some ways) but FCP is so much faster once you get used to the magnetic timeline.

Try the speed editor. I’ve used fcpx since it was introduced but now I’m at least as quick, probably a little faster, on Resolve with the speed editor.

Not sure I agree having a $400 control panel takes the place of the magnetic timeline concept which does not require such a thing. Yes it helps speed up the process but the timeline is still like an oldschool timeline vs a magnetic timeline that doesn’t really get in the way. Plus if I’m in the field with a laptop or soon a iPad Pro I’m not very likely going to use a hardware control panel.

I just don’t like how Resolve edits in general for me to invest in a custom control panel that only works with Resolve. If I ever make the switch however I may consider it as an option to bridge the gap a bit.

You can move things around on the CUT page timeline but of course do not see the clip icons. Maybe with the iPad version of Resolve with touch control things will change on the CUT page. The advantage of Speed Editor is in fine trim etc I think. I move between pages depending on what I want to do. Speed Editor is good on both and I got when the deal was available for another copy of Studio too.

I heard the cut page is getting enhanced for the iPad version since there will not be a cut and edit tab and just the cut tab. Perhaps BMD is consolidating the two or enhancing the cut tab enough to no longer need the edit tab.

I'm not opposed to editing in Resolve. I just prefer FCP right now. I also shoot with a P4k which is a pita to get into FCP if I shoot raw. Ok maybe not that bad but it is an annoying step to the process. Resolve also has Fusion and better audio tools. At some point I may just learn to get more comfortable with Resolve. Makes sense given the cameras I have and full support for the formats I shoot with.

Up till this year I was just PC and editing with EDIUS. With my PC EDIUS has problems editing with native files from my GH5S and GH6 UHD etc so I have moved to Resolve which makes better use of my 1080Ti. Wanting to further improve performance I was looking at a new GPU but back early in the year they were just not available and if they were cost almost as much as the Studio Max when it came out so bought one. My first Apple product as we are all PC or Android in our house. It is nice and quiet and just a bit faster than the PC for most editing with Resolve. Which is all it does of course though do have Topaz as the other application. Use HDR screen as preview from Studio Max and option to Airplay to my Sony TV to check output etc is potentially attractive to me for the iPad Pro 12.9 model. Maybe a better use of funds than a GPU upgrade for the PC yet again!! Maybe an Intel ARC is a cheap upgrade for the PC to get the hardware decode /encode that the 1080Ti does not contain.

I don't know the model/age of your Edius - but assuming the chipset isn't creating a bottleneck to negate the benefits of a new GPU -- I would definitely look at the previous Nvidia 30XX series cards for the next few weeks or consider an ARC as a stopgap.

That would be the best bang/buck theoretically, but is Resolve or any NLE software optimized for ARC? I suppose for rendering it might be.

I too have a rig with a 1080ti, but pretty sure I need to just go with a whole new one if I am going to get a modern GPU. Apple Silicon continues to look really attractive to me in this era looking at what it would cost/hassle to build one again.

I have one of the original Threadripper 1920 12 core with 1080Ti and 32G RAM. I have EDIUS 9WG as well as EDIUS X WG also Vegas 18. EDIUS does not use GPU for decode so processing multicam GH5S and GH6 UHD is just not possible unless using proxies. I shoot 2 hour long shows so this conversion is not viable in time or hard drive space or necessary as Resolve even on the PC will do this ( just ). The Studio Max will edit these files just fine with just the occasional audio hesitation. I am sure that a modern CPU and GPU would work fine but for EDIUS that would have to be Intel QS to do the decode as no other GPU is supported for this. Hence my move to Resolve. I used to use Vegas and Sound Forge for my audio but have now pretty much converted completely to Resolve. I think Resolve does in fact support ARC likely with multi GPUsupport if with Intel QS CPU.
