New iMac 24" as HVX Editing station...?

1. 750 bucks to upgrade to 3gb of Ram from apple. So thats a big NO. Im running 1gb now till i get another gig this month or next month. Ill run at 2gb. SO-DIMM prices to high right now.

2. Yes, the DVI port can run either a Mirror of the desktop, or extended desktop. I will be running the DVI port to an external 26" LCD HDTV i have for help editing and monitoring.

No Wireless Mouse or Keyboard.

Will let you know motion speed later tonight.

Ill be running footage off of both internal drive, and external USB 2.0 drives.

iMac is finally here, had to complain and finally he came ... anyways, its pretty awesome, got FCP installed and all that fun stuff, ill post more and answer any questions anyone wants to ask now, but ill post more later on tonight.
Is there a way to hack the DVI port so that you can use it as an external monitor for another desktop or even an xbox360?

If you have Shake 4.1, how smooth does it run?

How will you be upgrading your ram later on? You plan on taking it apart?

No way to hack the DVI port for INPUT, its output only unfortunatly. If it was input as well, the world would literally explode, seriously, because it would PWN that much!

I have shake 4.1 but just bought it knowing id need to use it eventually, i have no clue how to use it so i cant really help ya there.

The ram is easily installed on iMacs by removing 2 little screws underneath the screen and just popping it out and in, can be done in about 5 minutes, nothing to take apart.

Ive done some searching and getting a 1gb stick and a 2gb stick can be done for around 400 bucks from Mac Mall. So 350 cheaper than going with Apple for the upgrade, plus can sell the 2x512 MB chips on ebay or something to recoup 100 bucks maybe. :P

Im still installing stuff, but let me say , i thought my Macbook Pro was fast, this thing rips through everything. ive never ... anyways, im posting seeing if anyone wants me to test speed on anything SPECIFICALLY. like an export or whatevr...just post your ideas and wat you want me to do here

try converting a 10 minute DVCPROHD 1080i 60 clip to MPEG 2 for SD DVD & H.264 HD??? see how long it takes on both :)

Ok razamalik, ill do that, anyone else have suggestions, im sorry ive been gone a little, im in the middle of the horror fest grind...heres a pic of the iMac at my place now :)

that HDTV is a 26" for size comparison, i didnt even notice the cat til just now

it's a beautiful thing sir,
i'm also thinking of picking an imac up for editing.......love to see a big phat "pros and cons" list from you focused of course on 720p 24fps editing on that bad boy;)
and you got the stock 1gig of ram?

Yup, just the 1 gig....theres this thing with me and ram, i had a Dual G4 for a while, and i actually did a lot of business on it with wrestling companies, taping their shows, and making DVD's, at the time, NO ONE here in the industry in the bay area was doin it but me, so i got all the business...well that thing never got upgraded past 256mb of ram! yikes...

:)

Congrats, did oyu customize with anything, video card? Ram?

Ya, that cat is seriously insane. :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

I havnt forgotten about this thread, and updating it, if anyone has any specific test theyd like me to try and benchmark to add then let me know.

As soon as im done with the horrorfest, which should be by saturday of course, then next week i can give some numbers and what not , ive only got a Macbook Pro 2.0ghz to compare against, but it would be a good comparison of the Core Duo and the Core 2 Duo. Both systems are configured very similarly

Yea I got the 7600 video card and the 500gb HD. Didn't go any bigger on ram at this point. Too expensive for a college student. Plus i can definitely find (2) 1 gig sticks for cheaper than apple offers. Plus I am only editing SD at this point so i should be ok.

O yea, i got the wireless mighty mouse and keyboard too. :)

UPDATE: Just checked the fedex tracking on it and it's telling me that it'll be here by thursday. Then again, after hearing your story bout Fedex, I'm not holding my breath.

Well it was here when it was supposed to be, but the driver didnt make a real attempt to deliver until i called for the 3rd or 4th time it was to complain.

The Ram can be done later, and ya for cheaper, just a little bit of hassle to sell the old chips, but thats what im gunna do when i have the time. THe video card is an important upgrade, thats why i got it, even though there are rumors its upgradable via an unreleased type of notebook GPU card . Other rumors say that the Airport Extreme inside the iMac is actually an 802.11n spec'd card, which is what is expected the iTV to run on for speeds 10x faster than 802.11g. So thatd be cool!

Anyways, i cant wait to hear what you think of it, im sure it will scream for all your needs and then some for a long time to come. I would be in the horrorfest without it.

how important, in your opinion, is it to have evenly balanced ram sticks? For instance keeping one of the 512's and getting a one gig. Not for long term use, but just til i can afford the second. Does it adversely affect OSX or programs (fcp specifically)

It shouldnt effect it in any noticable way at all. think about the fact that the ideal iMac 24" ram situation is an unmatched 3gb (1gb stick and 2gb stick)

This is important with the MacPro, but as Cynic states, doesn't affect performance on the iMac.

I REALLY want to know how your new machine handles MOTION. This would be huge bro..

BTW... Greeting to all here, I think this is my first post so WHATS CRACKIN!!!

I too would like to know the lowdown on motion performance....

I'm "this" f'n close to getting a macpro but damn.... this imac just seems like a steal

The upgraded iMac 24 has the NVIDIA 7600 GT graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM dedicated graphics memory.

The stock MacPro desktop has the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics with 256MB memory.

That's what I have so performance should be comparable.

What benchmarks are you interested in?
