New HVX200 Footage - Kaku with production model

He mentioned the PhotoJpeg conversion increased the noise.

The chopper scene shows some noise. The car passing scene looks a lot cleaner, so it's hard to tell if it's the camera, or settings (maybe gain), or the conversion process.

Actually I just looked at the mov file of the chopper. It had the noise.

Does anyone know the settings which this video was shot?

I'm hoping the gain was cranked.

SalaTar, thanks for the bamboo shot... I don't mind m2t's or WM9. If m2t's are at 25Mb/sec they are very nice... after all, good enough for Sony, JVC, and Canon for their *original* recording...

The bamboo shot looks like something from the same series of test as the chopper. Both are way, way, way too noisy. I mean bad, evil, question my purchase plans noisy. I don't think it's the m2t or photoJPG doing the harm here...

Steve, I'm hoping the gain was cranked as well, and assume a mistake...

Because he cranked the gain up to max to catch the chopper. That's not normal HVX behavior, that's HVX on max gain...

It was. On DVInfo he said that he had the ND filtes on and the chopper suddenly appeared, so he cranked up the gain to be able to show the motion of the chopper rotors.

By the way, is the max gain setting 18dB?

Here is one more clip 60p>24p from kaku's server. Again it's converted to 1280x720 Photo Jpeg for easy playback.

It's 256 MB.

(For those that haven't seen this clip it's 1:03min of bikeride in slowmotion, sporting both a glimpse of highlight performance, one hand camera technique and skidmarks)

But I'd really like to see indoor footage, more footage that shows face, human body.
With low light condition or with high light condition. I'm interested with the colours of the skin etc...
Not considering the first really good footage of Hvx200, I must still admit that what I've seen from Canon I really liked. I'm speaking about the footage of the little child, or the family, have you seen that Anders? What do you think about the quality?
I believe it's shoot as Hvx200, without knowledge of the camera, but the quality in that condition it's very filmlike, don't you think?

Honestly, if that's +18db worth of gain, that's the most reassuring clip I've seen from the HVX yet. That noise looks the most "film grain-ish" noise I've ever seen from a video camera, and that's pumping out at maximum gain. Did you get to see "Crash" in the theater? Some of the shots in that film are nearly as noisy as that chopper clip. And what's even more reassuring is that I've noticed little to no proliferation of the disgusting compression artifacts that were rampant in the preproduction models (maybe they actually did some worthwhile last minute tweaking after all?), which was really just about my only concern with the HVX footage up until this point. Granted, most of Kaku's clips have been daytime shots (I haven't noticed that any PC-friendly clips of his new "nighttime" stuff have been made available yet), and certainly the most notable instances of that nasty, blocky artifacting were present in the very dark areas of the clips. But either way, the current footage has definitely shown that things are looking up.

Yes 18 is possible, but in the same way it was on the DVX -- assigned through a user button rather than on the gain switch.

The HVX can be so much cleaner than what's being shown though. The first key is in the detail level. I was startled to see what a difference it makes in noise. I mean, we knew about the outline effect obviously, and I knew that on the DVX the detail function makes noise more visible, but man -- it really affects the HVX.

Crank the detail level down to around -5 and things get silky smooth and sweet. Although a higher detail level can lead to a higher perception of sharpness, it's fake; the actual resolving power isn't any higher, yet the effect on noise is. So I'd say that most rational users would want to stick to no more than -3, and probably down around -5 is the sweet spot. -7 is possible, but that may make things a bit too soft.
