GH3 New GH3 footage

Really charming low light footage. Don't know why people bashed it on Vimeo. But considering that lighting conditions it looks really great to me. Fine grain. Good skin tones (under yellow streetlights!!!). Must have been shot with really high ISO:

Wow, looks really good to me.

Ick. Some of the footage doesn't look too bad, but other parts look like something shot on a video camera circa 2006. The sky looks particularly bad - which I realize is a consequence of the higher ISO. Maybe it's just the lousy compression they used on export or something, but I just don't think this is an excellent demonstration of what the GH3 can (hopefully) do.

Most of the lenses that he used are not really ideal for anything but shallow depth of field. For not color graded, pre production, high ISO it looked fine. I hope it gets better when it is released. However, I think I could work with it the way it was in that video.

This post makes no sense..... The reason there is shallow DOF is because he had to open the lens so it can see at night. No lens in the world without light would be able to record this footage. That same .95 lens stop down to f/5.6 - f/8 will give you a deeper dof.... has nothing to do with the lenses he used, heck you can film a whole movie on a 25mm lens and especially with the GH2 and it's extended mode function.

Furthermore I liked the footage for only using available light, looks good for these conditions.

I was one of the ones that bashed that video on vimeo.

I think it looks rubbish - like an old Canon XM2 or something.

Nothing I've done with my GH2 has ever looked that bad - in any conditions.

Care to share?

Really, you don't have to. To my mind people are looking at all the wrong things. Yes it's rough and quick (I'm sure none of the testers really had a long time with the camera) but if you look beyond the surface, there is much to be excited about.

Exposure wise the low-light sensitivity looks good, but I think Pampuri forgot to wear his glasses as almost every shot is out of focus.

some of the lenses he used are pretty soft wide open. Some of the shots in that scene are crisp as hell which is why I assumed it was the glass choice for some of the shots.

I am just not impressed with overly shallow depth of field and very soft images. I would have been more impressed if he had shot it at ISO 6400 with a good F1.8 lens instead of F.95 and ISO 1600. That is something my GH2 cannot do well. While it can shoot ISO 6400 in video with the Hack it still doesn't look good unless you use B&W and are going for that "noisy" look.

Nikon or 5dMarkiii are probably the only cameras that could have shot that scene with the lens closed and a lower iso. Imo I know we all strive for better but we must be realistic. The GH3 is going to be an amazing camera and the price is very low compared to the competition.....

On the GH2, ISOs higher than 3200 simply make use of digital gain.
