FS7: New FS7 little brother?

The irony is that all anyone has to do is announce a new camera, and DVXUser will be all over it.
There is no need for hyperbole, like "Get ready to be amazed" or any type of prelude.
All that has to happen is the words "new camera" to get out, and there will be a very long thread about it here.
It doesn't even matter who is making the new camera. It could be "new camera from Sony" or "new camera from some guy on Kickstarter."

Boy you kids put a lot of pressure on a fella. Makes me afraid to type.

Here are some random words, pulled from a spy novel I brought with me to read on the flights to & from IBC. I'm opening the book and blindly pointing my finger. Go ahead and discuss this for the next 11 or so hours until the announcements come out. Knock yourselves out.

"Discomforts and poke no thanks hundred Canadian could tempt worried breathlessly no doubt"

A mean camera for a mean man. Ain't no Whelps here! You can't impress everybody all the time but I think most of you will like what Sony has done. For those that all ready have an Fs7 no worries. You will be content with what you got. But for those who haven't made the jump, though this might be what you want.

That's all I can say for now.

Remember, man up and be a man's man. Ain't no hairless Whelps! Yup.

Ok I'll guess:

Same everything as FS7 except body and no extension unit. CINE EI could go but it would be stupid :)

Hm alright I'll take a crack at it...

"Discomforts and poke" So sharp edged and not the most ergonomic, interesting choice.

"no thanks" So it will have tons of features we want but now that we will have them we will wine about something else that's missing

""hundred canadian" could this be the price?

"could tempt worried breathlessly no doubt" Those who always want new gear will be tempted to buy it?

That's it, a camera with all the features we've been asking but it wont be good enough for us because it doesn't do raw at the compression of h.264, in a funky body, and it will be tempting to buy even for those who just bought a new camera.....all for 100 CAD

On the subject of being a huge tease, when are you going to announce a single drive solution 5Q for run and gun shooting?

Well if I was going to make such an announcement I wouldn't tell you that I was going to, would I? :-)

(CDR-4) Convergent Design to release Odyssey5Q+++

Two trusted sources confirmed Convergent Design will release a smaller version of their highly successful Odyssey. It is a single drive solution with a 5" screen. Mitch Gross will announce the Odyssey5Q+++ on February 28th during the National Tooth Fairy Day celebrations being held in Washington DC.

God knows, if that's it (same old crop sensor, just feature tweaks and price manipulation in a new shell), Sony will have underestimated the patience (and intelligence) of its customer base. But I'll hold out hope for miraculous incorporation of a full-frame sensor after all, even though insider vets are getting grumpy about that rumor...

Of course you will, with a name like focuspulling.
Might be safest to assume snark, but giving the benefit of the doubt: finally evolving to full-frame in the FS camcorder line-up would be a major boost to aesthetic concerns like focus isolation, generally overused with wide-open cheap primes onto smaller sensors, but nonetheless critical for composition (even if it requires lots of, yeah, focuspulling). It's a much better world when you can hook a continuous F4 aperture zoom lens that's tack-sharp (like the power zoom that never worked well on the FS7), and get shallow focus all the way to wide, instead of using hyperprimes that add all kinds of yuck. All of Sony's lens introductions are full-frame going forward. Their sensors should follow that pattern.

If/when Sony just re-houses Super 35mm into a downgraded FS7 (even though brought up-to-date one year later), despite the whole #MissingPiece optic of a "game-changing" product launch, you can call it a cynical move.

I guess I need to change my profile picture to something of Steven Wright.

I've been warned time and again that my incredibly dry sense of humor doesn't translate well on the Internet, but I just can't bring myself to constantly inject winky faces throughout my postage.

don't worry I got it......;)

though he does bring up a good point about f4 zooms on full frame.

I met Steven back in 1984 when he was on a Budweiser College Tour. Oddly enough, Bill Kirchenbauer was the headliner/closer, with Franklin Ajaye providing the opening. Steve slotted in the middle, although he was the one most people came to see. After the show I went "backstage" and saw Steve just wondering around. I came over, said hello, shook his hand.

Ah, this is really like his line, "I put instant coffee into the microwave oven and almost went back in time". This was October, 1984.

Edit - if anyone wants to watch the live streaming, it's at 9 AM CET

The specs look nice.

There is future RAW output and there's a 3G-SDI again, like the FS700. So if you can get RAW directly out that would be better than an external box.

Electronic ND looks very clever

I like the size and weight

Not so sure about 4k internal at 8 bit, that's a disappointment.

So, along with the A7sII, this seems to be christmas come early...

well done sony

cheers
Paul

Seems fairly stripped of features and high priced compared to the FS7, but maybe not.

I really want that size and minute weight in my backpack though! With Sony FE lenses total camera weight would be about 1,3kg. Thats nothing for the quality you are getting! But the price is too high as a b-cam for such a niche use. I own the FS7, and this did not make me think twice about that descision. Grrrrrreat :-)
