FS7: New FS7 little brother?

I'm not saying it doesn't have a place, but I find it hilarious that people will bang on about Full Frame being 'cinematic' despite the S35mm being a standard in cinema, and despite them not putting anywhere near as much thought into their lighting and set design which has a much greater impact on whether something looks cinematic or not.

'Cinematic' as a term that relates to actual theatrically released movies is much more often the T3/T4 split on a Super 35mm sensor than it is f0.95 on full frame 35mm.

I hear you.

I'm always surprised at the number of people that mix up S35 and FF35 and they're professionals... Lets not get started on 50mm on one vs the other...!

So maybe Sonys new FS announcement is a remote phosphor light! FS - Full Spectrum...

the point is that s35 is not the only option and preference. Just because it ended up as a defacto standard doesnt nullify other gauges. I am sure the above could care less about any digital camera, as we all know they shoot film.

But I think there is a big market for a FF 4k camera amongst us mortals to sit above the A7r II and in between fs700 and below FS7. If you want to shoot S35 fine, The F5/55 FS7 are fine proven specimens. S35 is as you said a standard and most prefer it. But it doesnt negate the fact there is a market for a full-frame camcorder with 4K internal recording and proper audio. It may not be as big of a market as the Super35 one, but there are people out there like me who want to have a camera, just one , who can do it properly.

There are at least a dozen other S35 options for those who could care less for full-frame.

Btw, I do love S35, but would like to have a full-frame camera as well. my 2 cents. Cheers

Fair enough. To be honest I'm really not interested in any camera not as good as the FS7 unless it is significantly different, as in an action cam or similar. There's enough options for B-cams out there already.

Absolutely there is a time/place/look for full frame 35mm video, but the point I was making is that 'full frame 35mm' is also a really sloppy shorthand for 'cinematic' with a hell of a lot of people out there. There's nothing worse than watching people run and gun on 5D mk3s shooting wide open at f1.4 and constantly missing/seeking/going past focus. These days it is such a hallmark of crappy production that I just kinda react to it adversely on a visceral level. Of course, in the right hands and with an understanding of the system and how to get the best out of it, it can absolutely yield some wonderful results :)

I'm refusing to buy another camera unless it's 8k FF with S35 4k crop and HD crop for S16, it's the way forward.

There will be something new about this FS camera.

The size/shape/weight and look will be attractive, along with ''a'' feature. Not just a small fs7, some to attract fs7 owners too.

IBIS?

FF A7s lowlight sensor with no RS issues?

240p 1080p, 480p 720p and so on in burst modes like an RX10II but decent quality?

Can't think of anything else that could make everyone want one,

other than maybe just being a sexier smaller fs7 specs replica without one or two useless features at 4000-ish$. I'd want one.

I'm with you! I've finally settled on FS7 after owning FS700 and constantly searching and getting excited by new cameras being released. Fantastic camera that will last for long, camera that can take any project.
No intend to buy that new camera from Sony... But, the idea is to create a product that you didn't even dreamed of, create a demand for it :) So maybe tomorrow I will be excited again and will try to convince myself: "I NEED THAT!".

I'm waiting for more cameras with global shutter. It sure would be nice if that was the "new way to see" --- although it would be the new old way to see.

The FS7, for me, isn't a distinct difference in image quality compared to RAW out of the FS700 (which is all i shoot generally). As an overall camera it's better, more accessible but grass roots quality-wise? I don't see enough of a difference to make me swap. So i've always said i'd wait a generation, see what's after the FS7. I'm not sure this is it though. Perhaps next year.

I didn't owned 7Q so for me it was a question of getting Odyssey or selling it for FS7 (or something different) and having great codec in camera. Seeing examples I have to agree that FS70Q vs FS7 is not a massive difference (at least IQ).

The difference between shooting with an FS700 7Q Raw Set-up and a barebones FS7 is SO big and so joyful when you hold the fs7 and just get that quality to small xavc files on a card.

IQ? no difference. The only way I wouldn't upgrade to an FS7 is if I 100% shoot on sticks in a studio-type alexa/red/f65 configuration.

100% with you. "cinematic" is so much more than just shooting wide open at 1.4... even s16 in the right hands is ten times more cinematic than your average wide open 5D shoot. I am with you here.

I guess it depends, i have a 4k RAW workflow, a bare bones FS700 + O7Q is remarkably light and flexible. I can rig it all the way to wireless FF if i choose.

I do understand the lure of just internal everything, but i still don't think the onboard codec is good enough. And RAW for an FS7 seems more of an effort than it does with the 700.

What does mini FS7 mean exactly? Does that mean it keeps all the frame rates but you lose Raw and the different flavors of XAVC? No SDI? Sounds like I am going to pass if true....

FWIW, reading the last few lens related posts, Zeiss released a new Milvus line of primes for the Canon EF and the Nikon F mounts. Samuel thinks it's mostly updated ZE/ZF lines. And they might be. But that's OK too.

I'm in the other boat on this, I'll be on it in a flash ! (depending on the price)

If rolling shutter is sorted and movie quality is sorted then i'm there too.

And by rolling shutter i don't mean skew. I mean jello, up/down squash and stretch. It's a fact that most of my footage is headed for vfx/post work and tracking jello footage is nigh impossible. I'm amazed that the vast majority of 4K camera all have such shocking performance on that front. Even the new DVX200 is useless. That's a giant separator between prosumer and pro IMHO.

So A7s with faster read out and IBIS would change my mind. And better quality of movie recording then i can hear my credit card groaning already...

Three years ago, Sony announced a global-shutter S35 sensor with 14 stops (the F55). Almost 2 years ago they announced a global-shutter 16mm sensor with 12 stops (IMX174). Sony could build a small, affordable camera around even that and have a hit, as some have alluded to in this thread.

Unless they brought the a7s sensor performance up to the RS of C100/fs7, then it's a hideous mistake.

If they did, and the sensor is up to the high levels, I am in. I LOVE full-frame, I'd marry FF if I could, just not at 33ms RS and the A7s colours and blue clipping.

Fix those, make a FF IBIS camcorder with an 8bit XAVC-L 4:2:2 codec with a nice C100-like design, and yes we'll all want one.

It'd be the C100 we always dreamed of at some point.
