FS7: New FS7 little brother?

Those specs make logical sense, along with the image too.

The same rumour does say Sony have something to shock everyone. Not sure if that means 'shock everyone with lack of innovation' or something nicer :)

Maybe two announcements, wishful thinking though...

cheers

I actually hope those specs are true. Just as we all expect and want (aside from the FF lovers)

Well with the price drop of the fs700 i don't see why one of those with an O7Q or Shogun wouldn't be infinitely better than those specs (if true).

The FS700 when it came out did shock everyone, the FS7 less so but it was still an awful lot of bang for the buck.

Maybe this will be super cheap.

cheers

Yes, those specs are really underwhelming. And definitely not living up to the hyperbole of the Sony teasers.
While there's certainly room for such a camera in the FS line-up, there's not much market value in it. It's like "hey! here's a crappy version of the FS7! But it's cheaper!". So far every new FS camera has brought something new and better to the table.

Maybe it's a rumour spread by Sony to down-play expectations, so there's more WOW! when revealed?

I would kinda be happy if it was true because that would probably lessen my urge to sell my FS700 to get it and I'd be better off just buying a Shogun (or 7Q) instead ;)

Or maybe it won't be about IQ but about innovation in hardware around. In camera stabilisation? Or super quick AF? Who knows!

If you've not done that already then an O7Q shooting 4K RAW would give you a brand new camera... unless there's something magical released i'd seriously consider that IMHO

I reckon crappy to to the core but with a wow function to make FS7ers want it?

1000FPS burst

Or just FF.

Ive been thinking about fullframe - to me the 5/55 were seriously let down by no speedbooster or other routes to a 18-xx smooth manual focus zoom that was not $20g

But the FS7 has space for a booster so really fulframe becomes a bit 'meh'

Best thing about Full-frame - s35 crop without speed booster. This will be a cheap camera - very cheap - 4000 euro. FF with 4K XAVC Long GOP 8bit (S or L dont matter same thing really), 120fps slo-mo and burst modes, HDMI only , and it comes in a box.

IMO the only way they could create a stir with a lower spec FS7 would be to make it available for about 4K Euro's (including VAT)
This would create a stir but it 's still no missing link.!

Off course it would the link between FS700 AVCHD (HD 28 Mbps) and FS7 XAVC-I 4K 600Mbps
The gap in Sony's current e-mount camcorder portfolio is huge.

the F5/F55 FW announcement today shows that sony is not giving up on either camera....to be released in jan 2016....FW for FS7 supposed to come in oct 2015....so obviously this new camera will not nibble at those heels...
it won't be a fixed lens camera, the announcement says e-mount, so i think that means it will have an e mount?
sony has released 3 still cameras in the last couple of weeks/months and all 3 do internal 4K 8bit.....somehow i don't see why this new one won't be 10 bit....sony is pushing everything forwards and have to fight canon with specs AND price if they want to eat into their C line....
i would prefer the new sensor from the A7rII over the older A7s but if sony is going after canon here, they will have to spice things up with AF and in body stabilization......
the A7rII does internal 4K 8 bit s-log 2 along with pretty good AF and in body stabilization.....in terms of IQ a bigger box for more money can't be worse then that....and dropping features does not sound right either.....

More than likely as said before it is a smaller FS7 with no Raw/ProRes and lower maximum frame rates. I will probably do AVCHD and some flavors XAVC. I think maybe you get 10 bit out to a recorder and you lose the handle and the CINE EI mode from the FS7 coming in at cool 4.5K.

I don't fully get why everyone wants a full frame video camera.

Super 35mm was great for cinema for decades and for something to take advantages of Vistavision etc you really need a bit of an epic subject, at which point you'd probably not be looking in this price range of camera anyway.

Plus you'd need all full frame fast glass and wouldn't be able to get the speedbooster umm... speed boost. You'd count yourself out of using some of the greatest movie glass ever made.

Odd.

Totally agree with this, although being able to have full frame and then being able to switch to S35 is a cool feature. That's why I loved my A7's and plan on buying a speedbooster for the fs7 if I decide to buy it.

To be honest, I'll stop myself now before I descend into another anti AF rant. I'll just say that I appreciate other people use their cameras in different ways. But also that there's a reason why hollywood movies don't use AF. Because until Skynet comes online no computer, however advanced, knows your thoughts and how you want to push a narrative by using manual focus controls.

How is the AF with the 28-135 with the FS7?
....ok....definitely not something i would point out as a major selling point....sometimes it works surprisingly well, other times....
but the FS7 has none of the latest tech that makes AF a real tool......that said, i am surprised how often i have it in the ON position.....

i think that manual focus is completely different tool then AF and AF is not really a replacement for manual focus....but i think both have their place or at least i am hoping for AF to advance more and more to have more of a place as a tool....for example: i am pretty sure that in the not so far future we will have AF systems able to track an actors face/eyes (or rear end if that is the focus) for a shot FF at f1.2....this will happen and sooner then we think (the A7rII has something very similar now, probably does not work perfectly yet...)...that does not mean that a manual focus pull might not feel better in certain situations.....

I just love the look, of course it all depends on the glass you use, you can definitely get the same FOV and DOF using different lenses and aperture combinations.

One of the FF lens I own is the Sony 28-135mm. This lens is designed for 4K shooting. The extra FOV you get over S35 on this lens is brilliant and it's a true workhorse.
Even though it's F4 on the A7S its still the perfect run and gun lens (f4 is not an issue for me using the A7S) plus it has electronic zoom functions. Some complain that it's fly by wire but for a cine lens costing 2K it's a great investment.
It stays on my A7S most of the time and can cover almost all shooting situations, especially as the A7s has fantastic low light capabilities.

My big complaint with the A7S is the DSLR form factor, it's just not for me. A Camcorder form factor with direct access to the most used functions makes life so much easier than scrolling through a menu every time you want to make an adjustment.

After shooting FF I find it difficult going back to S35. If the rumoured A7SII Sensor has improved AF and Focus Tracking, Full Sensor readout at 4K and low light performance I think you will see many people moving to FF.

Horses for courses, but my feeling is FF is the future (at least for me)
the 28-135 was clearly designed with FF in mind....and i am pretty sure it was not designed with small/DSLR style bodies in mind....
i seriously doubt sony will put a brand new sensor in this FS camera, no matter how many they sell, an A7sII would sell 100:1 bodies, so that is where a new sensor would go and that is why sony can come up and out with all these sensors so fast, they sell a ton of cameras with it and then the tech "trickles down" to the FS line....which also explains why it makes little sense to actually come up with a new S35 sensor....for what? a sensor exclusively for a couple of 1000s or 10000s FS bodies? especially when so much development goes into FF sensors, pretty much everybody wants them and it is much easier to get better IQ from a bigger sensor....
everybody is talking about 8K now....well sony already has it....in the market....A7rII....
anyway, i really like the idea of a FF sensor with a s35 crop option....that should make everybody happy....
