GH4 New footage

Those two clips look pretty good. I just don't see a huge difference in image quality between the Sony A7s and the GH4 that others are seeing. I would not mind having both though.

Heh, in a way - the cheaper prices make it harder to make a decision. That is probably why I have a BMCC, a GH2, a Sony RX10 and 3 different Nikons…..ughh….
I don't know what to do anymore. If the GH4 can produce decent stills, I might go that way.

EOSHD Low Light Test - Panasonic GH4 vs GH3 vs 5D Mark III raw

In your blog you say that the GH4 low-light footage at 2K is not much better than the GH3, and that if you shoot 4K, downsample and export the GH4 high-ISO footage to ProRes HQ it looks blotchy, but if you downsample and export to h.264 it looks good. I'm guessing this means that if one wants to actually use GH4 footage in a 2K project, it has to be downsampled and rendered out first? I'm not sure it's worth the cost in workflow time over a Canon, whcih provides a usable high-ISO image right off the card. Perhaps if you can keep everything shot under 800 ISO it's fine, but I don't like that limitation.

I think where the GH4 will shine over the A7, is with it's 10 bit 4:2:2 output fed into the Shogun.

I'm looking forward to this combo!

Blackmagic Production Camera 4K, Panasonic GH4, Sony PXW-Z100: Skintone Comparison
- Zeiss Compact Primes 25mm T2.1 on Panasonic GH4 & BMD 4K
- ungraded Shots from all 4K cameras
- graded shots from all 4K cameras
- no artificial light = only natural light, overcast day
- manual whitebalance around 7000 Kelvin for all 4K cameras
- flat cine profiles (+ others) with Panasonic GH4 & BMD 4K
-caveat: grades werde done on a quickly calibrated display, so take them with a grane of salt: but at least the ungraded footage shows very well your starting point in grading.

I think you're right, and that combo will shine, but I hope they develop a 10bit 422 4k flavour of pro res fast. 2.5 hrs of 4k footage in pro res 4444 - the only option available at present - requires 2tb of storage. For anything beyond shortform, this is beyond my pocket.

I like the CINE D look, and I'm grateful for Panasonic for including it. If you're wondering what realy IQ advantage the GH4 has over the GH3: CINE_D and 4K is what it comes down to, and 10 bit.

Its weird that to me, Cine D still has a bit of a video look to it. Cine V actually looks more cinematic without any need of further grading, even though there is probably less information in the highlights. I think this is a camera that absolutely will not over expose without looking like video. I would be interested to see tests playing with the highlight control of cinelike V and also the things like luma levels that can be changed in the GH4 to see whether extra range can be given to the highlights.
