FS5: New firmware is up. V4.02

Thanks dvbrother, I would be interested to see how it handles to an external recorder at iso 2000. I'm keen to pick up a fs5 but still sceptical if it will be a cleaner image than my 5 year old fs700/oddysey 7q setup which produces stunning imagery.....

200% my feelings. The FS700 + O7Q 4k RAW is so damn good and very under-regarded. Though I would prefere some features of the FS5, though only if there is a picture quality improvement. Would be very interested in RAW comparisons between FS5 with new firmware and FS700

Fs700 quality in FS5 body would be the dream but from what I can see online the FS5 raw to prores has banding issues in the sky and seems to fall apart a little even with the new v4.03 firmware. The FS700 doesn't have those issues. It looks as though 5 and a half year old FS700 and Odyssey7Q combo will keep going until something in the sub £10k region can offer something of equal or superior quality

I wanted to come back to this thread and retract my earlier posts about liking the new HLG gammas for SDR. It turns out I was hasty in my evaluation. This morning I pulled out my scopes, lights, test charts, etc. and spent a few hours going through all the paint menus again from scratch. No matter how hard I try I cannot create a decent Picture Profile using HLG for SDR on my FS5 that looks better than the VORTEX-FS5-PRO profile that I already provide in my training video. I have no doubt that HLG is great for HDR, but it certainly makes a poor choice for use as an SDR gamma.

And at this point, I have zero interest in HDR production so the new HLG options are something to think about using in the future -- not now. But it wasn’t all a waste of time. I moslty shoot with my F55 and FS7, so it was good to take a fresh look at the picture quality of the FS5 and rediscover just how nice that camera can look using a WYSIWYG REC709 profile right onboard the camera -- thus avoiding the labor to grade in post and the potential pitfalls of gradeing 8-bit 4K files. The camera really can look nice.

Thanks for all that you do, Doug! I've integrated the VORTEX-FS5-PRO into my workflow because of your training video...with great results. I really appreciated the lift of a template, and along with other great suggestions and settings, am enjoying my FS5!

Yes thanks Doug J.

I am a big fan of your FS5 Vortex Pro profile & use it all the time...in fact I've spent some of this week trying to get something close to a reasonable match to it with my other main cam, a PMW-300. I'm a little closer than I was but I've still a long way to go! Really, really like the look I get out of my FS5 with your profile. Great training series too ....so keep up the good work Doug!

Thank you both very much for the kind words. It's good to know that my efforts have helped others get more from their cameras.
