GH5 new firmware : GH5 GH5S G9 on MAY 30

this this this!!!

Well the noise didn't get fixed. I just did the upgrade and it's still there. Too pissed to even test the AF performance! Guess I'll have to post my GH5S/GH4 VFR comparison and flame the hell out of Panasonic until they get off their asses and address this.

But, hey, we got a couple of silly B&W profiles that would be better done in Photoshop, Resolve, or literally anything besides in camera.

Clearly most use the GH5 series as video cameras so more video camera features would be nice. Like smooth gain adjustments while recording, menu selection while recording, all parameter indications on LCD while recording. Just like the Panasonic or Sony camcorders ? I do not need ANY fancy profiles and prefer to do in post so new B&W stuff is a waste of firmware locations. Now fine tune of colour in camera just like the DVX200 would be nice so that the cameras can be set up to match since the GH5 and GH5S are different and also very different to my Sony camcorders. No way I can get the deep burgundy colour out of the GH5's that I can with the Sony camcorders and need to do this in post. Whatever I do they still look orange or yellow tint. That I would like to fix in camera.

The AF does look to be performing much better. Sorry to hear the other fixes did not show up but glad to see the reaction from Panasonic.

I just heard that the NLE performance of the 10bit files has been greatly improved when recorded with the new firmware. Can anybody else confirm this? If that is the case thats a pretty significant video related update.

I think it was more important to get the Sony color science fixed rather than other way around, just my $0.02.

Do you mean the 10 bit Long GOP? That would be great.

The division that develops the GH5 probably still thinks "Photo Camera - and oh yes it does video as well", sort of like Kodak still thinking "film" while digital was already about to overrun them.

It would explain why they announce yet more silly profiles to the already large list. How about a "don't mess around with the image sharpness, color and detail by noise reducing it away" profile for a change?

This firmware update does practically nothing for GH5 video users. Any sane person will not use continuous auto focus for video, a camera simply cannot mind read the intent of the videographer as to what needs to be in focus. I saw the test, yes it is better but just not good enough for video.

Panasonic USA has been milking the GH5 by not providing discounts for camera lens combinations as did the rest of the world. Prices are dropping hard, a new international version can be obtained for around $1500, but not for Panasonic USA, it stays $1999.
I suspect street prices will keep dropping as more camera manufacturers deliver 10 bit 4K 4:2:2 and raw options. And with new cameras they will lose their video enthusiasts quickly if the only thing they can do is add more silly photo profiles.

Another absurd mistake in my opinion is the fact that Olympus and Panasonic IS lenses are not compatible, a real missed chance that would have benefited both companies.

My issue is that I cannot get the GH5 or GH5S to actually reproduce dark red or burgundy at all. Both tend to be more orange what ever the WB. Have to isolate and adjust this every time costumes are dark red. Not an issue of matching the Sony's that do in fact match the real deep red colour correctly especially my NX5U 3 chip. Checking with a datacolor Spyderchecker 24 and creating a lut in Resolve results in a very big change in particular reds whatever the WB setting. I would like to adjust in camera to avoid this.

Try V-Log-L using V-Gamut, that definitely gives you burgundy reds but unfortunately your blues will be too strong and you would have to lower overall saturation.

Understood, and I see where Cary has suggested V-LogL/V-Gamut as something to try. Personally I think the color accuracy feels better with HLG but I'm not doing actual measurements like Cary.

I agree with Cary about a sane person not using AFC, and I don't when I'm shooting handheld or from a monopod I'll use AFS at the beginning of the shot, and if necessary to refocus during the shot a half press on the record button, holding it down until the focus area frame border turns green. If I'm shooting from the gimbal I will put it in MAF, and a light tap on the LCD screen will refocus after a re-frame but have to be careful with that because it can show up as a camera movement. But where you have to let the CAF take the reigns and be a robot is when you're moving along on the gimbal walking or running, chasing some action, CAF may be the only choice, just have to accept the bad with the good.

On my GH5s, it feels like face detection may have surpassed 1 area as the best method. The most challenging mode for my PanaLeica 12-60mm F2.8-4.0 is fully zoomed at F4.0. I was shooting at 23.98 fps ISO 320 with the new V1.1 firmware of course. This is welcome if confirmed. Where things are not improved is when you use the rotary thumb switch to select between AFS/AFF/AFC. I can move the switch to AFC and the AFC icon shows up in the corner of the viewfinder but it remains in AFS/AFF unless Continuous Auto Focus has been enabled in the menu. Similarly I can move the switch to AFS/AFF and the icon shows up in the VF but unless that mode has been selected in the menu it remains in AFC. It seems like the function of the switch therefore is no more than a reminder of the mode you want but unless you have the corresponding setting in the menu, it isn't the mode you're in.

I have installed the V2.3 in my GH5 but have not tried it yet.

I think it's unfair to say Panasonic isn't looking at this as a video-first camera. They've shown a ton of interest in video features right from the start, and the entire GH5S launch proves they are prioritizing the video market. Even though there are things I'd like to see more, the updated Auto Focus, IBIS, and audio improvements in this firmware are all video focused features.

That said, I am surprised they have not addressed GH5s VFR noise, offered a profile/toggle to strip away electronic corrections and further reduce sharpening/NR, added 1080p 10-bit VFR support, etc. All of these seem higher priority to me... but who knows if they are willing to even let people see a more unprocessed rendition of the sensor image or what their lenses look like without corrections, or if the gh5s noise issue doesn't come from a deeper problem itself, and so on.

I actually agree with you to use HLG over V-Log-L, but I find the reds definitely better under V-Log-L but there are just too many other issues.

All I need is 48fps with audio (preferably c4K) and I would buy a few more Gh5/s to go with my existing two. Please in the next firmware.

I’m too waiting for 48fps.

Sadly it was announced in the original GH5 V2 firmware slides and got really excited. Alas it never made it passed PowerPoint.

I am still confident Panasonic will fix VFR issue in their next firmware update.

Doubting they'll give us an option that gets rid of all noise reduction and sharpening though. Would be nice.

Yes I have tried Vlog on the GH5S do not have on the GH5 and want to shoot both UHD 60P so not possible in HLG as this is only available on HDMI for external recording. When I get one I will try of course. I think that HLG is a little better as I have tried this for HD recording. Would love to just adjust in camera and save a lot of adjusting after. I shoot theatre so have NO control over lighting that is often LED these days. The Sony's seem to manage this better for the reds than the GH5's and that may be some of the issue. In pure white light then I do get the red's that I want. When do I ever get white light !!! However the colour shifts with LED theatre lights seem to bias the reds more for the GH5 than the Sony's turning them more orange/yellow. WB is pointless as the WB changes by scene and even within a scene so I set all cameras to fixed indoor WB and always need to adjust afterwards. I was just pointing out the one characteristic of the GH5's that the reds always appear orangish. Tried playing with WB but find it easier to adjust the reds in post rather than mess up the whole image !!!
