New Final Cut Pro Announcement at SuperMeet?

I don't get it. What about the other programs that were in the suite? Even if Color is gone, what about Soundtrack Pro, or DVD Studio Pro?

I think this was just a beta demonstration to a specific industry group. Nothing's even gone up on Apple's site yet, and the release isn't scheduled until June. I think we'll get the rest of the story later.

I hope. $299 is nice to buy into something, but it is annoying close to what it used to be to upgrade the entire suite. I am ready for the upgrade; I just don't want to see all my old tools cut up. Final cut is the only reason I run an Apple machine.

Maybe that is $299 for just the editing app....
Add more if you want any audio, dvd authoring, etc...???

I just spent a bundle upgrading to CS5 - I still need After Effects and Photoshop.
And Premiere CS5 can handle AVCHD natively.

I saw that Panasonic will come out with software in June to handle AVCCAM in FCP.
I wonder if that will still be the case??

Well that is basically my concern. If they don't keep an upgrade path from studio suite, all of the older pro users of the suite will be screwed.

They don't. I have been through this with them before. When a new version comes out, they stop supporting the old one.

It's not like they are gonna cripple it or make it self destruct. It's not Apple's job to support it. As long as the latest revision is stable, it's up to other vendors and the industry to decide how much support it gets. I'll put money on the fact that we'll still see FCP7 in major post houses in two years.

I don't think we're all jumping to the FCPX ship right when it sails. FCP7 should be supported for at least another year of two.

If that is true, they will change corporate policy from FCP6 to 7. Apple did the switch when I was finishing a major project, and they said that they don't support older versions.

Yep. That is true. The problem is you lose phone support if you get a major issue. That may or may not matter to you. I saw FCP6 for a long time after 7 came out ...

I know dozens of FCP editors....
Most of them never touch Motion, Soundtrack Pro, Cinema Tools, Live Type or DVD Studio Pro.
I use all of those but maybe Apple is losing the bundle approach.
They want to push everyone to the App Store so they can quit making, packaging & shipping DVD-ROM's and printed manuals.
At $299 - the other people making add ons for FCP will have to get really aggressive with pricing or die.....
Apps for everyone....

The only thing that looks a little less is the DVD authoring... Color correction, improved. Keyframing, improved. Audio, improved.

Soundtrack Pro was buggy and a nightmare, but I still used it. I don't own ProTools. Soundtrack eventually gets the job done if you need to master something, even if it might crash. Motion was ok for a quick title.

I was hoping to see all of this updated.

On that note, I was annoyed to receive my new macbook pro (with thunderbolt) without any adapters at all anymore.

How big will the download be? Will they still ship DVDs?

That is a good question. I see the disc dying off by 2015.
They will probably drop ship discs to the Apple Stores.
I think Apple is stream lining it's distribution network.

it takes a lot of people to handle & ship discs at a retail level.

Look at RedBox - And BlockBuster was sold to Dish Network.
What plans Dish has are????

I think the future of media will be flash based readers and SSD.
Eventually Holographic storage that will revolutionize - everything.
