New Final Cut Pro Announcement at SuperMeet?

Ummmm, do you have Direct TV or Cable? On demand service? Is that not 1080p "STEAMING"?

The quality of HD Broadcasts is far from what you get on a blu ray, it's like half the bitrate. Correct me if I'm wrong, but no one currently broadcasts at full HD, I believe current HD broadcasts go out at 1440x1080.

Blu-rays aint going anywhere....i can't send a 24gig file online, yet. Apple needs blu-ray support
This upgrade is exciting, can't wait to see/hear more

LOL, My friend, go to a Best Buy or Costco and have a look at Televisions. I would say a MAJORITY of sets there have youtube, netficks, facebook and all sorts of apps BUILT IN. I come from from a stills back round with a 20 year studio. For the past 6 years I have not sent a client a CD or a print. It's ALL DIGITAL TRANSFER. Look at print media, DYING! You don't think Apple and Steve Jobs has shaken industries? THE IPOD! Haven't bought a CD since. TAPES? LOL! Go find a Tower Records. Find a Music Plus. Shoot, find a record store! They're all DYING! Tapes?????? Maybe you drive a 1987 car, but that last 5 or 6 cars I've owned all had CD players at LEAST. The newest car I bought, not even a CD player, just and IPOD JACK.
AudioKarma.org look around there and get back to us.
Vinyl Records, Reel-to-Reel and Cassettes are not dead. Tower records and virgin megastores were dead before iTunes, places like Amazon killed them off. Their is a REALLY big world of music appreciation out there and the largest majority of it is not satisfied with low bit rate MP3 and AAC files. Don't get me wrong, MOST music is now sold in this way but that doesn't mean that ALL music is sold this way, and it is really turning a blind eye to the reality of things to think that CDs are dead.

Now, take a look at Ipads and other tablets. Ipad outputs 1080. Theaters display digitally. I'll bet the last thing you buy blueray will be a Playstation 3 game, and I'll wager that soon Sony will be streaming their games solely.
Yeah, cause digital download only has worked well for sony in the past. Witness PSPGO. Physical media is FAR from dead.

Hell, you'll be lucky to find a Blockbuster soon. DVD rentals will be those dollar machines you see outside of convenience stores.
Netflix and Redbox killed Blockbuster several years ago, its just taken them this long to die off. This happened WAY before digital downloads and had more to do with cost, selection and late fees than anything else.

It's been over a year since I rented or bought a DVD. The Ipod and now the IPAD or such tablets are QUICKLY going to change how you purchase and acquire visual entertainment. I for one can't think of ANYBODY I know that does not have an Ipod, and chooses to listen to CD's or TAPES!
Then you need to get out more. Millions of people still buy CDs, Tapes, Records, DVDs, heck check out Ebay and see how many people still buy up VHS lots.

Jeff says. "it's going to be a while before you'll be getting 50GB over
your cable modem."

Embrace change. Just how many of you own and Ipod? How many of you own and Ipad? Take a look, and long hard look, at how the Ipod changed the music industry.

I have a ROKU. I have had one since they were launched around 2 years ago now. I love it and I have no other form of tv coming into my home. It is 720p and stereo for netflix (they have been saying 1080p and 5.1 was coming since before I bought it) It is decent quality on SOME movies and TV shows but to even suggest that even the best Netflix, Hulu+, Amazon or any other digital download service comes anywhere near the picture or sound quality of a Blu-Ray or even most DVDs is just insane. There is really no contest. Maybe it looks good on an iPhone or iPad sized screen with crappy earbuds but on a decent sized TV with even a basic surround sound set up it is like comparing apples and minivans.

Will all this change? Probably, but its not going to happen in the next couple of years.

Time to bite the bullet and go for a davinci. Now that they have made it XML compatible for easy round trip to/from fcp, it's a no brainer. I transitioned from color to davinci a couple months back. It's been pure heaven.

Regarding fcp, I'm going to stay positive until I can actually put my hands on it. But for now, I'm not feeling the new interface. Nothing sexy about the current one except that I know it like the back of my hand and can get my work done!!!

Certainly Davinci is a great app, especially for tracking, however it also means a massive upgrade in terms of computing power, video card, storage, etc.
With Color I can easily fuction off of an iMac or Macbook Pro, an i/o box from Matrox and my easily transportable grading monitor. (FSI 1770)

I agree it's important to stay open to this new incarnation from Apple, but I fail to see how moving into a MagicBullet Looks scenario represents a complete or Pro grading solution.
I suspect this "Looks" style CC is meant for the editing application in the same way as a 3 color corrector is in the current Final Cut version. However I would be surprised if they meant that they have eliminated the Apple Color application entirely...

I'm really looking forward to this new release, especially if it means my 8 core 16gb system will perform more like those specs than a 4 year old laptop. Just about had enough of "General error" and "Not enough memory!" errors...

More of a technology preview than an announcement. Sew fear uncertainty & doubt so people don't move to Adobe & Avid. After pondering this a bit, and thinking about Apple, this sounds like the Aperture update of the last year. It went from being a very professional interface to something that was much more 'consumer' oriented and geared at iPhoto upgraders. I disliked it enough to immediately move back over to Lightroom. Another possibility is that the 299 version is the entry point to the entire suite, with more pro functionality for additional purchasing. We can assume that Apple is out talking behind closed doors with their base in Hollywood at the studios that use them, and that it's hard to fathom that they would abandon these guys, but...again, Aperture was a very big change. It was big enough to drive me off and the price has collapsed. Lastly, Apple is about selling consumer computers, I doubt the revenue from this division is worth their hassling. And let's not forget all the firings last year in this product group. As to Color, and other add ins, it could be that the underlying code was so bad that making the move to 64 bit was too much work for the revenue.

But I'm willing to wait and see. I'm not desperate to move.

It's a big world outside of the USA and Europe. Most of the world watches TV, but most of the world does not have fast internet connections.
Every post house and TV company I have seen in Africa uses PC's and mainly Premiere. Apple's cant be fixed out here, and you sure as s**t wont get 50gb over your modem.
Most of the world still delivers on DVD, and BluRay is the next best thing, and no matter what one guy running a gadget company reckons will change that.
This thinking may work in highly developed regions, but meanwhile the rest of the world is working away with tried and tested workflows.

This may be the reason that Apples and FCP seems to dominate in USA & Europe, but not the rest of the world.

That said, I am thinking about switching to an Apple, and would like to try out FCP. But if they keep developing their thinking on these lines I may not have the chance to ever make the switch.

I smell some nice cross-grades coming from Adobe for 5.5 :-)

New FCP X is really Not So New

http://www.mikejones.tv/journal/2011...ot-so-new.html

...just saying

Frank

To add to that list, the compound clip function has been a feature of Blenders little video editor for some time. Called Metastrips, they're useful for when you have a cluttered timeline and need some clear space.
The thing is, most software is normally a lot more than just the sum of it's parts. Pulling together a lot of needed features into one place and in a functional way is what will set it apart. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it works in reality in a few weeks time. There was no mention of iPad integration, which surely has to be involved somewhere, so I feel this was just a very cut down taster.

I do think it was significant that Apple made a presentation that directly spoke about the needs of editors and didn't spend any great time talking about grading, FX or any other side of post. It definitely communicates to me that they are serious in continuing FCP as a professional editorial tool.

Listening to the conference I got a completely different feeling. I got that they were targeting this to a editting only crowd, as in people who do even think about grading or FX. Hence all of the "auto" function, auto color correct/match so you don't have to grade, auto stabilization so you don't have to track, auto audio, etc. Felt to me directed to prosumers upgrading from iMove. But this is based on listening to a noisy internet stream so we will have to see.

You guys keep talking about not getting 50 gig streams over the internet. Don't you think that 50 gigs will become 20 gigs, then 10 gigs as compression gets better and better....??? And, just think about the way you are going to purchase FCPX, over the internet. My main point is, ya better embrace or at least accept change, because TIMES ARE A CHANGIN.

One thing I can't find any concrete info on, is it possible to skip the prores ingest and edit AVCHD natively? It'd be nice for FCP to do what the other NLE's do to save the hardrive space.

I think Larry Jordan sums up the whole thing very well, talking about what was said and what wasn't said. Two interesting things, though:

1) It seems very clear that the other apps in the suite are NOT being dropped; and

2) This is apparently the same build that was shown to editors six weeks ago (in fact, it's largely the same demo presentation, according to Jordan), and that they've made a lot of changes since them that they didn't show last night. Randy Ubillos told Jordan flat-out that they're actively listening to professional feedback right now.

Through the whole gathering of information in this new FCP, I kept saying to myself, "this feels a lot like Vegas." I like that a lot.

A whole lot.

It wasn't very clear, but I got that it will be a kind of hybrid approach to native editing, with the background processing while you work. There was no mention of an update to quicktime, which would hopefully address working with AVCHD on the Mac in general. And fix the bloody gamma issue.

I heard Panasonic will provide some software to take care of that problem.
But what is funny is that Premiere CS5 will edit RIGHT NOW without Transcoding AVCHD.
I upgraded to CS5 for that fact alone.
I have been shooting a lot with the GH2 and the transcoding time & space was killing me.
With the HVX200 I was using Raylight and have not transcoded in YEARS.
So transcoding AVCHD to ProRes in FCP is a step backwards.
