Im running xp, i went out and bought a 500 Gb hard drive, a firewire (4-6pin) and a board with 2 firewire ports and 4 usbs. When i got home the external hard drive worked fine, its just my computers ablility to find my XHA1 when its plugged in. ive looked around for help, and i found a thread or so. My computer doesnt even ackowlge its there. So i decided its a bad board on the Camera. Is there any other solutions..? And if i do send it back for a new board, how would i go about doing so, Either ask the acaully Canon dealer or from where i bought it (www.us1photo.com). Thanks too much, if you have anything it will help, im using it for school announcements so the faster the better :)

this just happened to me 2 weeks ago, and i had to send it in. I sent it back to the store i bought it at since my extended warranty was through them.
The site looks a little grey market to me though....goodluck.

I had similar troubles when I first got my A1, however it didn't need a new board. It was very frustrating just the same. It turned out that I had two problems: One, I was setting the camera to External Control instead of just Playback; and Two, my on-board Fire-Wire port on my computer was bad. After I bought a fire-wire card for my computer, which gave me two new ports, I haven't had any more problems.

That may not fix your problem, but perhaps it will help.

You might want to try connecting your A1 to another computer...find someone who has a PC with a firewire connection before you go through the hassle and cost of sending your camera back. Add-on boards can sometimes not function correctly...not have the correct drivers, etc.

For example, I run Windows XP x64 edition and purchased a 4 port wirewire board that was compatible with xp x64. Windows was supposed to recognize it and automatically install windows drivers. Well it didn't...not until I installed in into a different slot.

By the way, have you tried connecting another firewire device to your computer with that board to see if that works?

yes, sorry i forgot to mentain all those steps, those are all VERY important. Make sure a harddrive or works int he same firewire slot. I tried another A1 with the same firewire wire in the same spot, so make sure you do al those first! I got mine at Bel air camera out here in west wood California. Good luck

Try Changing Playback STD

Try Changing Playback STD

Try chaning the Playback STD setting before you connect your firewire.

If left on "Auto," I've seen Macs get confused and simply decide not to mount the A1. So choose "DV" or "HDV" depending on what footage you're about to import, then connect the Firewire. See pages 109 and 95 of the manual.

Worth a shot.

Had a similar problem on my initial attemps to capture via Vegas Pro. I needed to change to HD playback, and discovered that once you connect the firewire, you can not change the playback setting. Turned off A1, disconnected the firewire, Turned A1 to playback, change the setting, and reconnected the firewire, A1 recognized by PC.

Worth a try.
