New Final Cut on the way....

I know it is not legit, but you just have to turn your airport off.
I´m connected via LAN to reach the footage on the MPs raid, so it won´t work.
Nevertheless since I´m making money with it, I have no problem with paying for software.
I´d just like it cheaper for my narrowed needs:beer:

I think part of the problem with backwards compatibility is that it kind of makes it hard to do push the technology forward when you constantly need to be concerned with making it work with the older stuff. Photoshop while adding new features is still basically the same interface and user experience it has always been. I don't have CS4 so I am not sure if it uses the GPU at all but that is an example of an advancement in FCP filters. iMovie 08 really changed what consumer level video editing (not appreciated much until the 09 release) in such a way that people now want those features in FCS. I think that could very well be some of the changes we might see in FCS3 when it comes out and that would be hard to make work with older versions of Final Cut Pro. In fact, I am worried that it might not even work with my G5. With Snow Leopard on the way and rumors of a FCS3, I wouldn't be surprised if the next version is intel-only and with the new power anticipated from the new OS it is conceivable that some of the requested iMovie features could be feasible in a new version of FCS.

It would be a bummer if Apple made Studio 3 an Intel-only application.

I have a mixed studio myself, and I know personally a few great editors using G5's who would be irritated by the switch-up.

I'd be bummed, especially since we can edit DVCPRO-HD 1080 on a PowerBook.

Some of these applications seem to be headed toward heavy-iron-only partly because of the processing power needed to handle HD and more.

For example, Color is almost unusable on a dual 2.5 GHz G5. It's a far more productive on an Intel Mac with a faster GPU. And the rendering time is about 8 times faster with a Mac Pro.

I wouldn't presume to know Apple plans but to be honest if editing is your full time gig I'd think it's getting to be time to upgrade. The PowerPC architecture's retirement is coming up on its third year in August. I haven't had a G5 since early 2007.

So if FCP does go Intel-only that won't come as the biggest shock in the world. The iLife suite already went all Intel this year, so maybe the writing is in the wall. And that said you can easily shave a day or more off just about any project in terms of moving up to a Mac Pro, the difference in speed and rendering power is staggering. So I'd do it regardless. Still, we'll know when we know.

I believe it was mentioned a while back that Snow Leopard, the new OS will be Intel only. The fact that when the new Intel laptops came out and they were already faster than a G5 should have been enough to make most people upgrade...

Based upon past history, you had better come out of the dark ages if you want to upgrade to the new OS and FCS. I have a G5 and I doubt if I will be able to run the newest OS and FCS on it. Anyone can see with the prices and options on the newest Mac Pros that Apple has dumped any pretense of consumers buying a Mac Pro, consumers don't drop $4-$6k on a tower these days, that's rare.

My producing partner just received her new middle of the line Mac Pro yesterday. The bill was over $5,500.00 and she just upgraded a few little things with the middle of the line processor. Consumers buy laptops and iMacs, Mac Pros are made for Pros nowdays and it makes sense that the newest and coolest toys and features are only available on the newest hottest hardware. Marketing 101. Apple has always pretty much had FCS to sell Macs, they could have licensed the code off to another company years ago. But it does sell Macs.

No, us PPC users will need to get off of the fence. If we are pros who edit for a living, we need to cough up for new Mac Pros. If not, keep chugging away with our G4s and G5s and live in wanton lust for all of the cool new features that the Pros have.

Now that the new Mac Pros are out, there ought to be some good deals happening on the 2008 models. Seems like an attractive option for those trying to save on new hardware - 8 cores @ 2.8ghz or 3.0ghz is certainly nothing to sneeze at for the next few years.

Hey Noah,

I totally agree regarding the upgrade for pro editors.

The reality that I've seen in person is that some top studios still haven't switched all the way to Intel chips. One in particular still has half of their machines on PowerPC. And, they are 'kicking butt and taking names' nonetheless.

My point is that a solid Mac workstation is still valuable, even if you're a large studio using OSX Tiger and FCP 5.

OH, and I almost forgot....!

At a recent Panasonic demo, the presenter let it slip that he'd been involved with the new version of Final Cut, and that it would "have many new features for P2 users".

I'm excited.

Very cool - I'm looking forward to seeing it! I really hope that Apple doesn't alter in interface/layout too much. I'm not a huge fan of the Color interface and I think that the change in iMovie (not that I use it ever) was a step in the wrong direction.

I hate to say it, but this is not to be trusted.

Comments like this clearly violate the NDAs that all beta testers sign.

And I've seen no evidence that a new version is even being tested at all.

Just take it all with a grain of salt and a bottle of beer.

Yeah -- I think it comes with a USB dongle that lets you put the P2 card right into FCP.

HAHAHAHA....

No, I echo David's comment. If he's 'involved' it would have been a violation for him to say something (or her). Why risk it?

I received something in my e-mail this morning that leads me to believe that this rumor is true. Some companies that make certain products that are specific to FCS 2 are having big fire sales to dump merchandise quickly. I know that some of the parties that create these products do work for Apple and are under NDA. This would indicate that there is a good chance that there is a new FCS heading our way soon. These two companies never normally discount their products and they are now. The only logical reason would be that their products will soon be outdated and they don't want to be stuck with excess outdated inventory.

Dan

That's cool if it's true. I bought my FCS shortly before the latest version came out so I never had Colour.

But frankly I don't know what else they can add to it - perhaps animation?

I wouldn't be surprised if 2 of the new features are an updated Color interface (to be more "Mac-Like"), and more support for R3D files.

Well, that's what I'm hoping for anyway

We'll see at NAB but another reliable source has now told me that he thinks FCS3 in the Fall, NOT at NAB, not ready yet.

We shall see next week.

It may not be a matter of FCS3 not being ready... I would say it is highly probable that FCS3 is dependent on Snow Leopard which will likely be released in the fall.
