Here's some of my first tests at a photo shoot with the new Sony F3

That looks pretty nice. Of course, with few high frequency details over the majority of the frame, there's much less stress on the CODECs involved. If the entire frame were in focus, compression artifacts would be much more visible. The F3 produces decent color when good lighting is present.

Great stuff, in 4:2:2 this would be outstanding. But the YouTube export isn't ideal for this sort of test.

Planning on that. Was in a rush late last night. Shooting some insert footage for a Coke commercial with the Camera today. Will post pics and after it airs I can post the shot

youtube can do 1080p... they can even show you the original file. i don't know why people are so critical of youtube compression imho its much better.

even with all the compression, the native codec which i don't much care for and the re-compression to youtube, this sensor resolves so much detail. I really don't think there's any class of camera quite like it. it's really like they put a f35 in a smaller form factor. With S-Log down the line, and a 444 recorder, I don't think anybody could tell the difference between this and a f35... and it's a fraction of the price.

Look at the video above and you will see why I am critical. There is no mystery here.

It was a really rush edit and upload very late last night. I exported out of FCP for You Tube, and I thought it would spit it out as 1080P as I've seen before. Not until I uploaded that I saw it was only 720P. On my HD monitors in my edit suite the footage looks amazing, and I shot a Coke commercial today and everyone was blown away.

Its been a worldwind weekend and as soon as I can get it uploaded again I will. Getting the footage ready to show at the Sony event in Toronto tomorrow

there is the dropdown menu to watch it at 720P on You tube after you hit play on my link, but its default is 360P . Figuring out why it didn't output to 1080P

Hexagon bokah im curious if you can tell me if that was the packaged sony primes or not.

Those look like octagonal bokeh to me (8-sides) not hexagonal (6-sides). Most lenses have 7-9 aperture blades, and the bokeh shown in the image above is consistent with that. Cooke, Red lenses, and dSLR lenses are in the 7-9 range as well, and I would suspect that Sony's PL primes to be fairly identical to these (~8).

I really don't expect Sony to do 14-blades like the CP2 lenses, even Zeiss' ZE are around 8-9 blades. And it comes to the area of diminishing returns, as the sharpness of the bokeh only becomes apparent as its stopped down, which means that the DOF is getting bigger and there is less chance for bokeh. So you need to be shooting from further distance and stopped down to get noticeably angular bokeh. Canon for instance uses circular aperture blades decreasing the need even further for more blades.

Steve. I believe that was the Cooke lens. I did a quick test with the 2 50mm shooting a similiar wider shot of this because of the lights in the bg. The Sony seemed more round in the bokeh, and you know we were flying through our days and didn't even look to see how many blades. I'm hoping to put those two tests and the other short films we shot over the weekend. I've been busy in post getting ready to show the footage at the Sony event this aft.

We had a Cooke S4 21mm,50mm,100mm, and the Sony 35mm, 50mm, 85mm. The Sony lenses looked very sharp, good contrast, and good colour reproduction, (in my opinion only)

This makes sense being that Cooke S4 has 8-blades and would produce a octagonal bokeh, and Cooke's blades tend to be fairly straight. Most of Sony's high-end G-lens and Alpha Zeiss lenses have 9-blades as their aperture, and I should expect a similar quality to these more expensive PLs, so that may be the reason they seem more rounded. However, we shouldn't discount the probability that the different Sony PL primes (35mm, 50mm, 85mm) would have different aperture blades.

Either way, its good to hear, based on your initial impression, that these Sony PLs have comparable image quality to established PL glass. Especially considering that these lenses come out to be a perfectly reasonable $1,880 each when bought in the kit.

oops, you're right. and thanks for the update Nigel! I'm jealous :)

Steve - are you thinking of picking up the F3 with lens package? If they turn out to be good.

I'll say this. For a $13k camera I think it would be unreasonable for Sony to expect that customer to spend $15-20k on lenses. PL primes are costly due to the incredibly low-volume niche that it inhibits not because of cost of materials or construction; we really are talking about hundreds, maybe low-thousands, in sales. Proper PL zooms are a different monster. But its good to know that even peripheral equipment is scaling down in price, and if I decide on a purchase, the kit looks very attractive.

I'm guessing that this F3 mount is similar to an EX3 mount by the looks of it, so the existing EX3 adapters will maybe fit on this camera. If not, I'm sure there will be a ton of adapters from third-parties. So a ton of existing dSLR glass is compatible, I would be interested to hear what the price of these lenses would be individually.

While I appreciate the wide range of modular capabilities that this camera covers; from PL, to 444 S-log, etc. I'm assuming that a lot of people will be using their existing nanoflash/kipro and dSLR glass when they first purchase this camera.
