New F3 Footage from Canada

I think adding these lenses as part of a kit is a good start to have people buying in. Renting Cooke's up here comes in around $200 CDN/ lens per day so there has to be a middle ground. I did see a post on an XDcam user site where they looked at the F3 mount and it was close to the EX 3. Just a nip and tuck here and there. I'm sure those adapters will come out fast so that it opens up the still lens arena as well.

I think all your comments about Nano/Kipro etc are right on. Sony also talked about the new SR tapeless recorder this summer. The two types. One paired for the F35/9000 market and one for the F3. I also think other manufacturers are working on solutions to record that 4:4:4 S-log. It will be a whole new world by next summer

Like to see the Adaptimax people come with with Nikon and Canon mounts. As much as I'm sure I will love the Sony PLs, there will certainly be times where a manual zoom stills lens would be handy.

I have a set of vintage Canon k35 superspeeds in PL mount that I'm super excited to see on the Sony F3. I've so far only used this glass on a Red M & MX sensor as well. I really like the 'look' of the F3. It has a very neutral feel to me

Since I saw your video of "My Apartment" I don't know why you're still looking for other cameras.

Definitely, I think next summer we will see a bunch of affordable third-party dual-HD SDI recording solutions on the market. Hitherto there really hasn't been a camera that would justify a dual HD-SDI recorder. As this camera comes down in price overtime, the market for a recoding solution that can unlock that full capabilities of the F3 will grow including features like 60p, 4:4:4 SLog, etc. Competition should also drive prices down and also open up a larger potential market for a larger consumer base.

Andrew

emailed MTF and sounds like they will have F3 to Nikon adapters by the new year.

I'd be interested to know what the FFD (focal flange distance) of the EX3/F3 mounts are. This will be indicative of what types of adapters can be made for this camera.

I'm hoping that it will be below 27.80 mm, which is Leica's M-mount. This will open-up a ton of good lenses for the F3. And I think it is judging by the looks.

However, I also want it to be higher then the 18-20mm FFD of the Sony E-mount/micro43rds. This will mean that the new Sony cine-zooms will be adaptable (and usable) on micro43rds and E-mount (NXCAMs).

That statement may of just made my decision of returning the AF100 I have on pre-order even easier. Now, is the F3 sensor worth 8g's more and how much will the Sony servo zoom cost?. If the zoom is 'reasonably' priced, then most of my needs/dreams would be met. My EX1 and 5D wrapped up into one camera. Even a servo zoom with a 35mm still equivalent of a 30-135 2.8 I'd be happy with.

One of the things I found interesting at the Sony event last night is that they showed the NEX.. whatever number it is for next spring. The one that's a "similar" S35 sensor to the F3 (their words) The animation that I think is also on line showed the camera with Zeiss glass made for it. So if its S35 sensor and they have this Zeiss glass they are developing for it, that should mean it would work on the F3 as well. Right?

I'm guessing they showed you the S35 NXCAM not the NEX point & shoot cameras?

The Zeiss they showed on the NXCAM is one of the Zeiss ZA lenses for the Alpha-mount attached to the NXCAM via a E-to-Alpha mount adapter (LA-EA1). If Sony decides to make an F3-to-Alpha adapter the lenses would work. And I suspect they would since its an excuse to sell lenses.

We may even see contrast-based AF via adapter since they just added to the LA-EA1.

I have the NEXVG10 + LA-EA1 adapter + three zeiss alpha lenses... the AF is extremely slow... i mean like really bad... like wait three seconds and its ready.. :)

so unless they improve that _a lot_ i doubt it will be a useful feature. it works good enough for photo mode on the nex3/5, just not for video.

I am more curious about an e-mount to f3 mount adapter. the e-mount lenses have a fast & silent AF and they are coming out with a Zeiss zoom line. a cheap zeiss zoom would be nice to use on both cameras.

The reason is slow is because the lenses are originally designed for phase-detection AF, to convert to contrast detection AF the lens needs to do some tricks, which is why some lenses don't work, and other perform better then others. For Olympus/Panasonic, newer Four Thirds lenses have contrast-detection profiles in them so that they can be adapted easier.

But you're right, dSLR lens' AF is generally unsuitable for video. Panasonic does the best job with their "HD" lenses, however, for a large sensor with a wide DOF its fundamentally going to be difficult and generally useless.

Nigel, by any chance did they mention a proposed price? (I'm assuming from the description its actually the NXCam.)

I got a chance to hit the show today and see the footage projected and it looked amazing (even though they should have used a film projector ;). I thought yours and Stargate's looked the best from the one's the showed imo. Excellent colours and shots. The camera was beautiful I must say, picture, ergonomics and style. I really like the layout of everything, and the fact they have a lot of standard mounting threads (4 or 5 I think) in useful places on the camera which I can already think of useful for so many things, similar to what they have on the much more expensive 9000 and f23. The 5600k button by the lens is pretty cool, as well as the S&Q dial on the side, expected on a camera this price, but very nice that they added these. The prime lenses look really nice, and the fact they are going to have a powered zoom PL lens coming I thought was great, works with the zoom rocker built on the camera. If this compares at all to the primes I've seen from them, that would be pretty great. Similar menu to the ex1 and ex3 too which is pretty great for those of us already used to this layout (like myself). Really amazing s/n ratio on this camera, viewing it projected, it had little to no noise at all, but much of what was filmed properly had a very beautiful, soft feel to the flesh tones and a very pleasing bokeh. The SR Recorder and media as well as newediting workflow with NLE's thats coming, this is a major step in the right direction and bringing 4:4:4 RGB at a very acceptable price point for lower budget filmakers, will be great for many filmmakers worldwide. Kudos to Sony for building a great digital film camera at a really cheap price point. Please no one ever mention this compared to an AF-100, it is a completely different camera, targeted at a different market, and I think a somewhat newly created market.

Exciting times I must say
