EVA1: New EVA1 footage is here

I think for those who are still looking for that "right" image from the camera, the EVA is probably not for them...I do think some lose track of the fact that this was designed and is being released as a Cine camera, and that is where it will shine the most...with production design...proper lighting...a camera crew and proper post.

So you actually think this camera will be used for cinema, as in shooting features in Hollywood? This is what looks like you are saying.

No it doesn't.

So what does it sound like when he says some are losing track of the fact this camera was designed as a cine camera, and that it will shine the most with production design...proper lighting...a camera crew and proper post? To me sounds like Hollywood. Because I doubt the masses will have all of that every time they use this camera. And this is a camera made for the masses.

If you read my short post you will see I did not mention the word Hollywood....however, the 3 demos were all narrative work, and the camera is specifically designed for that...whether used as an A cam on an Indy or a B cam along with one of the Varicams, with proper crew this camera will be capable...you may not like the image you see from it yet, but that will not stop a Director and DP from using it, should they choose to...some have already seen enough from this camera...I like the image, but not the mount, so the camera is not for me...personally had I wanted it with an EF mount, I would wait till the camera's released, rent it and decide...anyway, in another few days there will be no shortage of footage out there...I think that in spite of you or I, Panasonic will sell many of these.

The thing is ANY camera will look good with production design...proper lighting...a camera crew and proper post. Take any camera in the EVA1 price range and if it doesn't look good after all that you should trash it. So saying people are losing track if they want to see footage not over produced doesn't make sense. Unless you were trying to say it doesn't matter if the camera doesn't look good without production design...proper lighting...a camera crew and proper post, because this is all it will be used with. Hence my Hollywood question. Because Hollywood is about the only use where you will always have all that. Small people will want a camera which looks great without the lipstick too.

To add to my other posts, we specifically picked a crew that we though would be the makeup of most of the users. One eas corp. guy, others were film students. Con who ran the crew has been around a lot longer.

Sure. But if you been around DVXuser for long enough and you certainly have, you get the impression the makeup for crew for most users here is actually 1. And not operator +1 but 1 as in only the operator.

Otherwise I can't see why autofocus is such a big deal and why people complain that even a FS7 or F3 is too big and heavy. And they aren't talking about for a gimbal or drone but in general.

Great unscientific tests from Carl as usual. My take is that the EVA 1 looks really great. The colors do tend to be more saturated than the C200 and skew more green whereas the C200 colors, especially in RAW, look much more neutral. The C200 .MP4 files bear out my experience so far, they look decent but not nearly as good as the RAW files. The Sony colors, as also have been my experience, look simply awful and really inaccurate. The 2500 native ISO on the EVA 1 looks usable but not as good as the 800, as is to be expected. I think EVA 1 is a contender but so far, I am not feeling the need to sell my C200 and go for the EVA 1. The C200's DPAF is far too valuable for the types of projects and situations I shoot in to give up for some minor improvements. In full screen 4K, the EIS on the EVA 1 looks as if it softens the image a bit but would be a nice option to have. After my recent few weeks shooting with the RED Weapon 6K, I can say that I really missed shooting with DPAF. Once you use it, it's hard to go back to just mainly manual focus. I think my experience with the EVA 1 would be the same, fine for sit down interviews but for run & gun, filming moving subjects on the deck of a rocking boat on the ocean, I think I would have a hard time nailing focus with the EVA 1 without a Zacuto Gratical and shoulder mount.

In my mind, EVA 1 is a very solid performer, and if I shot more narrative things with an AC, would be perfect. But for my run & gun BTS and documentary work, DPAF saves my bacon on a daily basis.

Carl provided some of his EVA1 clips. I ran them thru ACES (Panasonic V35 -> Rec.709) in DaVinci and only made lift/gamma/gain adjustments. No color adjustments. First thing you'll notice is the scooter in the background appeared orange in Carl's contrast/saturation correction from V-Log. Here it is back to a more accurate red.

Pleasing image overall! Thanks for doing that. However, do the neutral greys on the color chart look neutral to you? They don't on my end.

In the test, Carl say the C200 RAW gets the scooter right: it wasn't red exactly, more a rich golden orange.

I can pop-in to ProAV on Monday and check the colour of that vespa:-)

haha! don't go out of your way, or anything, but I'd be curious to know. Carl refers to it as red on facebook. albeit, and very difficult red for cameras to get right. and in response to my video using the ACES workflow to get Panasonic's intended colors back...

but my point in posting the video using the ACES workflow was only that Carl's color workflow of adjusting contrast and saturation on V-Log clips was misrepresenting the intended color rendering of the EVA1 (and Varicam LT).

Using DaVinci's Hue vs Hue curve, I brought the bike's color closer to what it (probably) actually is.
