F3: New Convergent Design "Odyssey"

Dear Grug,

I checked Avid's documenation for the Avid DHxHD 444 codec and the other very popular codec's documentation and they both dp not seem to support 4:4:4 at 50/60p.

Avid DNxHD does support 4:2:2 at 1080p50, 1080p59.94, and 1080p60.

http://www.avid.com/static/resources/US/documents/DNxHD.pdf

For comparison, I check the following resource also:

http://documentation.apple.com/en/f...dWhenAssociatingWithMessierRevision-XDC1-SW19

So, the combination of 4:4:4 and 50p or 60p does not seem to be supported by the popular compressed codecs at this time.

The Odyssey7Q, using an extra cost option, full uncompressed recording, and other options, will support record 4:4:4 1080p50, 59.94 and 60.

(All of this is subject to change, as the codecs may start supporting more options and we may find a way.)

Respectfully,

Dan Keaton

Initially no. But we plan to add another very popular codec which may allow us to record both 4:4:4

Hi Dan,

Actually is it does appear that ProRes supports both 4K and 5K 4:4:4 at up to 60p. There is a link below to Apple's latest ProRes whitepaper which lists all of the data rates on pages 18 and 19.

Dan when your team starts to work on that other codec I have a feature request. It would be amazing if you could debayer to 12 bit PreRes 4:4:4. I have found that codec a joy to work with when shooting and editing Alexa and it would be great to see it in both the Odyssey 7 and the Odyssey 7Q. If you can make the Odyssey 7Q use FS700's 16 bit linear raw to record to a 12 bit 444 file I don't think you will be able to keep then in stock.

Hi Dan,
When will have more info on pricing? I am going to have to make a decision in the next few weeks and I really need to know if your product is a viable option price-wise.
I am referring to the cost of recording, including media and codecs such as Prores 422 and 444..

Dear Gary,

We appreciate your suggestions.

We will attempt to honor your request, but it will have to be after we complete Avid DNxHD.

The Avid DNxHD codec and the Apple ProRes Codec, at least in some versions are very similar from a very technical point of view.

There are differences, and the wrapper is different.

And we are working hard to have our FS700 support ready soon.

Dear Yoclay,

We are preparing an email on pricing for our dealers and distributors. This may go out tonight or tomorrow.

We would like to give our distributors and dealers a day, then we expect to release the pricing.

At this time, our Compressed Codec Option is included for free.

Please note that initially only Avid DNxHD will be supported, but later we do plan on adding another very popular codec.

Dan,
A couple of things.
Will the regular Odyssey be able to do 59.94 (or 60p) from the A+B ports of the F3 and output Prores files in SLOG?
With the paid F3 RGB/SLOG upgrade, would we be able to get 444 on your Odysssey 7 as well?

Sorry if this has been covered before, but don't have the time to dig through 15 pages.
Lastly, did you get the pricing out, and where could we see it for all the options?

Cheers,
Clayton

Dan,

When the Odyssey becomes available, is it likely that the Gemini will drop in price? It would be a great addition to the F3 for the 444 output, but up to this point has been too expensive for some who have chosen the Samurai at 422 at about 1/4 the price. If the Gemini became more affordable, I might pick one up.

Respectfully,

Jon

Dear Jon,

We have tried to make the Gemini 4:4:4 attractive by reducing the price to $4995 (US) and providing $2,990 worth of SSD's for free (two free 512 GB SSD's).

The Gemini 4:4:4 is a great addition to the Sony F3. The images are very impressive. And later this summer we will be adding the Avid DNxHD codec to the Gemini 4:4:4 for free.

Of course, we also made the Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q attractive.

I apologize if this has already been covered.
Is there any way to record 1080 60P from a Sony F3 to the 7Q?

I'm going through camera menus and Odyssey options and can't find a configuration to get me there.

Apologies for reviving a dead thread.

Thank you,

Yes you can. Record in the "4:2:2/4:4:4 --> 4:4:4 (.DPX)" mode. In DPX we can currently support up to 60p, but I caution it will eat up the SSD memory very fast. We do not yet support ProRes recording at 60p but will soon.
