F3: New Convergent Design "Odyssey"

Very innovative... I like it the idea. I guess they couldn't wait until NAB.

"Lease on a day to day basis ARRIRAW, Canon RAW, Uncompressed DPX... "

And it's OLED... and it's only $1300!

Someone already beat you to it

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?304677-F5-Frame-rates/page3

But I suppose this is worthy of it's own thread. :)

the SRP is $1295, which gets you a 7.7" OLED Monitor with full software (i.e. Waveform etc..) - which is very aggressively priced compared to the SMallHD monitors which have no recording capabilities. Can't see why anyone would buy a traditional field monitor with the introduction of this unless it is dramatically cheaper.

Brilliant concept to buy only the CODEC's you want or need. You can also lease/rent a codec for short term use. These guys really thought things out.

The critical question is - How much per CODEC License? A current 512GB Convergent Design SSD is $1595.....I assume these will work on the Odyssey.

I am hoping it will work with my FS700

I'd like to see an F3 hooked up to this and see what kind of horsepower one could get out of it...

Man I would buy one just for the external OLED monitor at $1259 and forget about Sony's $5000 for their F5/F55 version.

People thought the flood of recent F3's were bad.... now watch the PIX & AJA dumping begin!

I'm glad that someone finally put a good monitor on a recorder. I was disappointed that the Samurai and PIX didn't have it.

Curious about the price for the 7Q, codecs and why no prores.

Wow! I've been wanting an additional monitor for clients/directors for a while now, for the same price as the current OLED options, you can get access to a recorder that will pull 1080p60 off the F3 in 4:4:4. That's really damn exciting.

They will all be coming out with this at NAB.
Look for Atomos to do the same thing.
A little birdy told me.
That's why Convergent is announcing now.

However, not a single manufacturer has heard what a lot of us have been saying for a while.
Forget the monitor / recorder combination.
Give me an EVF / recorder !!!!

looks very promising, thanks for sharing!

I wonder if this will be a cheap alternative to record super slowmo on a HQ codec with my FS700...? would love to have Prores in addition to DNxHD though...

really looking forward to NAB - this probably won't be the only recorder/monitor combo...

They haven't been able to get ProRes up and running on the Gemini to date (though not for lack of trying apparently). Would be great to have it though.

I don't use apple so correct me if I'm wrong but I thought even apple quit supporting pro res in the latest FCP version. Doesn't that make it a dead end codec?

I could easily imagine them developing their own new propritary codec that supports 4k at 4.4.4, or even apple raw.

i'm not using FCP, but its just more comfortable to get an overview of the footage by hitting the space bar (apple quicklook), instead of opening every single *.mxf file in vlc player. once loaded into the NLE it really doesn't matter.

there will be lots of new codecs and developments in the next years, 4K will change everything again i guess...

ProRes, like a lot of Apple products, is a closed sysem.

You can read ProRes files cross platform on mac and Pc, but can only write to them on a mac unless you pay Apple's exhorbitan liscencing fees.

Or you can go this route: http://www.cinemartin.com/cinec/

But from a hardware maker's perspective, it is far easier to do DNxHD as it is cross platform and free.

Does it do 4k or did I missed that?

Yep it does 4k too.

I was doing some more digging, from Convergent Designs late last night:

Dear Dennis,

Yes, there will be an option, a low cost option, for recording Avid DNxHD.

Avid DNxHD can be used in Final Cut Pro very easily, just download the codecs from Avid.

And we expect to offer additional codecs, when they are ready and approved later.

The price for the options and the 7Q will be announced in May.

Come see us at NAB, we will have the Odyssey7 and 7Q in our booth and many others.
Our booth is C6713.
