F3: New Convergent Design "Odyssey"

That's heartwarming, I say without irony. Sony putting customers first by making available the info you need to read that stream. Brilliant.
I think they realized they could have another big blast of FS700 sales with an affordable 4K recorder, and they'd be right.
If that FS700 raw is anything like the F5 raw, watch out. Holy cow. Lotta folks going to be making awesome material for $10K.

LOL! That made me laugh--Sony putting customers first. ROFLMAO! Don't bank on that for even a moment.
I'd trust them about as much as Kim Jong Un.

Here was the link to the original thread picturing an FS700 with the HXR-1FR5 interface and the AXS-R5 Recorder AKA 'The Bazooka' LOL...

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?301560-The-FS700-4K-Solution!

The other question I am wondering about is whether or not these non Sony 4K Raw external recorders (KI Pro, Odyssey etc...) will require the use of the HXR-1FR5 interface or will these recorder be able to draw directly from the SDI output ?

If the third party manufacturers decide to support Sony's 4k 12-bit over 3G-SDI you will not need HXS module, that is specifically for the R5.

I wonder if it isn't just better to tether and wear on your belt (or around your neck)

Isn't that like wearing your F55 body round your neck? Plus that looks like recipe for disaster, as the cable doesn't look all that secure. No, to me it's not a 4K solution.

Dear Friends,

I certainly do not mean to tease. I was trying my best to answer the questions instead of ignoring them.

This is a very hot topic, as many with a FS700 want to record with an external recorder to gain more functionality.

I just can't release the information until all of the approvals and details are firmly in place.

So, we will release the information as soon as possible.

It is a pleasure working with Sony.

Oh yes! :D

Dan,

Thank you for coming to the forum and answering our questions.

Will you have a working model of the Odyssey to show at NAB?

Dear Friends,

We will be showing the Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q in our Booth, C6713 (Cental Hall) at NAB.

We will be showing them as Monitors, not as recorders.

(We need to port over a great deal of code from our Gemini 4:4:4 to the Odyssey7, but this will occur after NAB.

(There is a reason why we have specified a July 2013 initial shipping date for the Odyssey7Q and the Odyssey7 shortly thereafter.)
We plan on showing the following:

The Odyssey7 will be shown accepting and viewing a live camera feed.

And we will be showing in the Odyssey7: Waveform Monitor (RGB Parade), Histogram, and Focus Assist (Peaking).

On the Odyssey7Q, we will be showing it monitoring four video streams,
from four separate IO Industries cameras, simultaneously.

Each camera will be shown in a separate quadrant, showing our Quad Split funcationality.

I expect us to have many cameras in our booth, and most hooked up to our Monitors/Recorders.

We will have a Canon C500, a Sony FS700, an ARRI ALEXA, a Canon 5D Mark III,
and a variety of HD/2K POV cameras, which include Lux Media Plan, IO Industries, and Indiecam.

The Odyssey7 or 7Q will also be at Sony's Booth and at Canon's Booth.

Our booth is located between Canon and Sony in the Cental Hall.

I have updated the list of cameras, based on our latest plans.

Respectfully,

Dan thank you taking the time to keep us up to date with the new products.

I was wondering as they the moniters look great would you have LUT support ? As in being able to load in LUTs to delogg the outputs from the f3, f5 etc.. while shooting just for preview.

Dear Surinder,

We have built-in Log to Rec. 709 LUT's. We support, internally, Canon, ARRI, and Sony LUT's.

And we plan to add a feature that will allow custom user LUT's to be used also. This will come later via a firmware update.

Dan,

Do you know if you have the horsepower for 3D LUTs yet?

Sony needs them on-camera in a big bad way.

Dear Nate,

I will discuss this with our engineers.

They are very busy getting ready for NAB, along with our entire team.

I would love for us to support 3D LUTs. It may take a while for me to get an answer.

I would hold off on that until we get official word from Dan Keaton from Convergent-Design. He is forthcoming about product and feature set announcements and ETA's.

I spoke with Mike Schell from Convergent-Design at NAB. He mentioned DNxHD should be shipping soon after the release of the Odyssey 7. Hopefully Dan will see this and clarify things.
