F3: New Convergent Design "Odyssey"

it has HDMI and SDI, and the ability to use it with anything from a DSLR to an Alexa is the primary marketing/design premise.

Since you are bringing some of our feedback to your team - The other thing that I think would be important is to give it both SDI and HDMI capacity, so that as DSLR's evolve into HDMI out devices (such as the 5D Mark III is about to do this month) the EVF can evolve with them. Silly to have to buy two devices today for this kind of thing. That is a huge market which you could have grow with you.

I know that if I had an EVF Recorder that did both inputs, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I could go from a larger cam like the F3 to a 5D in seconds. Perfect.

This is sound advice. It just gives the customer a lot more flexibility which seems to be what they are trying to do with this product range

Dear LyleGorch,

Actually, I mean October, November or December 2013.

One of these months is our target month for adding recording options, but we wanted to have some flexibility.

Please understand that our Gemini 4:4:4 recording code need to be ported over to the Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q.

It is not like we have not done this before.

Also, the very high performance 2.5" SSD's have just become available. We are not at the end of the product cycle for these SSD's.

We have a recorder that can be used in the meantime, it is the Gemini 4:4:4.

Major new products need to be announced at NAB, Cine Gear Expo or IBC. We choose NAB for this announcement.

Dear True North,

I will use you post to make a major correction in my previous posts.

We will offer, for purchase only, our "Compressed Codecs" option. This is a rather low cost option, so that the Odyssey7 + this option, keeps the total price very competitive with many other recorders. This is a Recorder Option, as it enables recording in the Odyssey7, as many of our other options do also.

Thus, to be perfectly clear, we do not plan on renting this "Compressed Codecs" option.

Right now, this includes Avid DNxHD. Then, our plans include adding another popular compressed codec, later, for free, if one has this option.

Other Recorder Options include:

Full Uncompressed + High Speed (120 fps)

ARRIRAW

Canon C500 4K Raw

HD/2K Raw, include Lux Media Plan, IO Industries, Indiecam, Weisscam and P&S Technik all in one option.

And for our Odyssey7Q, the ability to record from four video stream simultaneously.

All of these options cost more than the "Compressed Codecs" option. But, they can be purchased individually, or rented individually.

The estimates that I have been seeing, for the prices of these options, and for the prices of the SSD's have been very far off.

We will release our prices in May.

Once your rent or puchase one of the above options, you do not need another option to enable it.

But, the Four Stream Recording Option requires an Odyssey7Q since it has the necessary HD-SDI inputs.

I hope this helps.

Dear Friends,

The Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q are monitors only (no codecs) until at least one recorder option is purchased or rented.

Thus, someone who just needs a monitor gets a very high performance monitor with great features for just $1295 (US) (Odyssey7).

Thanks for the reply Dan, I think I get it now.

So after we have purchased the monitor, the only things we need to purchase in order to turn the Odyssey 7 into a recorder is;

A) A 2.5" Convergent approved SSD

B) A Codec of our choice (Rent or purchase is our option - compressed CODEC's for purchase only)

Is the above correct?

Dear Yoclay,

Our Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q have both HDMI inputs and outputs, and can support up to 60 fps and they support timecode over HDMI.

This is in addition to the HD-SDI/SDI inputs and outputs. (SDI = Standard Definition SDI)

"do you guys attend a lot of committee meetings?"

No.

apologies, Dan. that wasn't directed at you. i was commenting on the fact that you'd already confirmed the information being given back to you as a new suggestion.

Dear MPB,

I did not know if your comment was directed at me or not, so I answered.

I did not take any offense at all!

Dear LeavingTheCandy,

Our Avid DNxHD project was delayed since we were asked by Canon to implement full support for their then upcoming C500. This delayed our Avid DNxHD project.

Then we hired two highly qualified engineers to help speed up the project.

We are seeing the results of their work.

A Codec consists of an encoder and a decoder (Coder + Decoder = Codec), which you may know already.

We elected, for strategic reasons to create the decoder first, then the encoder. This helps ensure that the decoder works perfectly.

Our decoder is working great at this time, but we have a little more work to make it 100%. This is just the normal process of getting things perfect.

Then we will start work on the encoder which we expect to go quicker based on our in-depth knowledge of the decoder.

Many wonder why we have to built this from scratch. This is to take advantage of the very powerful, but very low power draw of the Gemini 4:4:4, Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q Monitor/Recorders.

I hope this helps.

1. We have been working with Sony for some time on the concept of us being able to record from the FS700.

There is progress, but it is really up to Sony. We are ready, willing and able to support the Sony FS700 when Sony provides their approval.
Please feel free to ask Sony at NAB.

I already asked over at the Sony forum about using your products with the FS700 and now I'm going to ask again. The Odyssey would be the ideal solution for raw recording on the FS700, as Sony's solution is kinda retarded/cumbersome looking. Plus you get a sweet monitor. Win win!

Dan, can you keep us up to date over here please. If it works with the FS700, both you and Sony have a sale :]

He's already answered that twice in this thread,.

See post #37 and #43

Dear Friends,

We are working with Sony to come up with a great solution.

We may need about 10 days or so before we can answer the FS700 questions in detail.

Please rest assured that we are diligently working on it.

WOW - that would be huge news if you could make it work. Good luck with your negotations and discussions and refer Sony to the this thread if need be. I am definitely interested in the Odyssey as a 4k recorder solution for my FS700.

Thanks for reaching out and keeping your potential customers informed, I can assure you efforts will pay off.

Cheers
Rob
