New Cinema EOS camera announcement

About the DSLR- Hoping the ALL I is much better than what people have been seeing from the MK3. Also wonder how this will compete with the FS700, seeing as the FS700 has ND filters, professional audio inputs and controls, so many things really....wonder what the Canon has in the way of bells and whistles for 2 thousand more than the Sony

It will compete in 2 ways. First, it will have 4k out of the box. Second, it will take the place of 5d Mk2/3 crash cams for hollywood production. Simple as that.

Canon are due to issue a press release ahead of NAB. What my source says about the new cameras is pretty extraordinary even in light of what Sony are doing with the FS700.
Canon will release a C500 for $25,000.
This is designed to be an Epic killer.
It is 4K at 120fps with EOS RAW via 3G HD-SDI. Officially certified raw recording deck solutions are being provided by Blackmagic and AJA.
At 60 fps EOS RAW from the C500 is 12 bit. This drops to a still impressive 10 bit at 120p.
The C500 also pumps out 1080p, 2K and Quad HD.

And now for the 4K DSLR…

Costing $10k. This does ALL-I, IPB and MJPEG 4K.
Both the C500 and 4K EOS DSLR have log profiles.
Another feature is that it has a Super 35mm crop mode (like the D800 with DX crop mode) for compatibility with cinema lenses.

There’s also going to be 2 new zooms. Lightweight 2kg PL and EF mount cinema lenses. The first is a 15.5-47mm T2.2 and the second a 30-105mm T2.2. These are pricey cinema lenses at the $15,000 mark.

More news to follow.

Pretty exciting if accurate - especially the C500!

So what are the chances that the C100 (EOS C) will have the same tech as the c300?

Well, not sure. IPB, All-I, and presumably the 4K mjpeg are all 8-bit VBR 4:2:0 codecs. XF Codec is CBR 4:2:2.

Sensor may be the same as C300, with a bayer interpolation for the 4K mjpeg? Maybe it will also do 8MP stills as well, and still have a razor sharp 1080p with amazing low-light. *EDIT: Just saw on canonrumors that it's supposed to have higher MP count than the 1D X, so scratch the same sensor idea - plus full frame, not S35.

Likely no ND's, Genlock or TC in/out. It might have an SDI out, but that's a big maybe.

Perhaps a single card slot? would mean no dual slot recording or relay record

Presumably it will use an LP type battery, probably not as long-lasting as the BP-955's on the C300.

XLR's? tough to say in 1D styled body, but I'd lean towards no. Or maybe mini-XLR.

I'm just guessing here, I really have no idea.

OK - this sounds really good to me.

Now for Sony F5, 4K Alexa, RED DRAGON...

Hopefully one of them will be able to make nice skin tones and then we'll be set!

Somebody said 2012 would be the year of the camera... yup, it's turning out to be just that.

What I didn't expect was the FS700 and now I am not sure what to do. Gonna obviously wait till after NAB but I gotta say, I am pretty blown away with how fast things are coming out at the moment.

If the FS700 comes in at $8k (although I REALLY want a lens free version) it's going to be a really tough call for me. The things I am unhappy with my FS100 seem to be addressed (minus a few little things).

What I am waiting to see is, what is the windowed resolution of their CDSLR is and if that is the C100. I gotta say, Canon and Sony battling it out in my opinion is a big win win for all of us. I like what i am seeing from both companies.

The CDSLR is very confusing to me still...now the rumors (yes just rumors...but usually the day before announcement, they have them dialed in) are saying it will be a higher resolution sensor than the 1DX....really? Will it be more DSLR than cinema or more cinema than DSLR...or a compromise? Which to me it is from the get go by being $10 K and being placed in a body made for photos. I get that some people like the DSLR form factor...but at 10K, with so many things missing....and a 20MP sensor. Sure hope it has some mojo for Canon's sake...probably does, but at that price it better..lol.

I don't think the $10k price is all that off. I paid $8000 for the 1ds and the 1dsmk2 when they came out. And they only took photos. Now factor in the new tech, and the dollar vrs the yen and there ya have it. Just put video first and stills second, but have the ability for a decent still, and the camera might me the multi-media machine the MK2/3 users really are looking for. It's the 1Dx that confesses me. I see a tiny market for that camera.

Yeah, I suppose Dusty....I think that photo capability AND great video capability are worth it....I'm just really curious more than anything what this camera is about - it's just a puzzle until we see the actual specs, what features it has, how the video is achieved from a high MP sensor....how the Motion Jpeg 4k looks, etc etc...

Wow... just, wow.

They're really coming out thick and fast with these 2nd-gen large sensor cameras. I actually feel spoilt for choice.

The FS700 sounds amazing, but now a Canon DSLR that's offering 4K Vistavision with log-recording? That might just sway me to move to Canon's side (which I've always been hesitant to do given a largish investment in Nikon gear and glass).

I've said it before, I'll say it again - it's a bloody exciting time to be making motion pictures.

The thing that interesting to me about the C100/CDSLR is how they plan on dealing with PL lenses and retaining a mirror at the same time...if they force a seperate permanent mount, the whole DSLR form factor becomes pointless.

I think it's possible that it doesn't have a mirror - no? Not technically a DSLR... but basically DSLR form factor, with 4K video support. Electronic viewfinder?

EG maybe imagine it as a direct defensive move against RED DSMC idea - the idea of fashion people doing shoots for both stills and video with one pesky RED camera might have irritated Canon into responding :P

I will be very interested to see how they manage 4K from a DSLR form factor; that's a lot of processing and a lot of data to push around without a fan of some kind. Amazing tech these days - looking forward to the official announcement, instead of hearing from the "sources".

Looks like the Cine-DSLR will do up to 60fps in HD. I wonder if they're still keeping the mirror reflex in the camera though, it seems a little odd to do so.
