C100: New Canon Cine-Servo 18-80mm EF Lens Announced $5225 Pre-Orders @Texas Media Systems

everybody was expecting something like the 18-105 F/4 sony servo lens....
we end up with less range, and T4.4 !! for 5K !

disappointing....
even though optical quality must be better, this is not the right target, in my opinion.

I am putting it on my wish list, really like that it is under 3 lbs according to specs. No it's not a all in one lens, but great range to put on your shoulder and walk around with.

Well, it is an F-4 but a T-4.4. I would guess that so is the Sony.

I've come to give up on finding a lens that is all of these things at once: long zoom range, shallow focus, lightweight. You can have a long zoom and light weight, but the f-stop will be around 5.6. Or you can have both a long zoom and shallow focus, but it will weigh 20 lb.

Even those ENG lenses are less impressive when you convert them from 2/3" to 135. For example, the Canon KJ20x8.2B has a 20:1 zoom ratio and an F-stop that ramps from just 1.9 to 2.7. Sounds great, doesn't it? But the crop factor of 2/3" is 4. So a full-frame lens with the same depth of field and the same angle of view would just have to be one that ramps from F7.6 to F10.8.

It seems to be a barrier of optical physics. You can shave weight by cheating optically, by making it varifocal instead of parfocal, for instance. But a constant-focus, constant-aperture, long-zooming, shallow-focusing, lightweight lens is a unicorn.

Oh please.....the range of this lens is almost equal to the 24-105mm on a full frame lens. The price is excellent for what you get. I suspect you think something like this should be $2000?.....if so, then you don't understand what it takes to make a lens, let alone a Cine style zoom.

Exactly.

I had a shoot on Monday with a C500PL with the Cine Servo 17-120mm and a C300 with the 24-70mm version II.

The quality difference was astonishing to everyone on set.

You get what you pay for.

Be use in PL the lens mount wouldn't power the zoom, iris, autofocus and image stabilization. And because Canon wants it to sell with the C100 and C300.

And also because the trend in lower priced lens design going forward is very likely to take advantage of all the possibilities to compensate electronically for the undesirable artifacts in the lens. (For higher priced glass I typically find the 'artifacts' desirable... ) For which an electronic mount is pretty much a necessity.

yes its a great lens for the c300 target, but for the low target c100 and dslrs video, a good 18-135mm F4 L IS with no powerzoom for 2000 usd i think was needed for a lots of users...

Anyone know if most of the functions(zoom, iris, autofocus and image stabilization) will work with my EF mount Arri Amira? If so, then the lens is a no brainer for me.

I will find out about this subject over the next week.....until someone at Canon puts a prototype on an Amira (or FS7,Ursa Mini,Metabones, etc) we won't know for sure. That being said, all these adapters have to pass some of the electronic info/commands because with EF lenses (and Zeiss EFs), you won't be able to open and close the iris with out some connections......Just sayin'

Actually 29-128mm. Not very wide at all. If it actually were the equivalent of 24-105mm I'd think about getting it. It's just not wide enough for what I need.

From Newsshooter:
What you’ll get when you put the new lens on a suitable EF-mount S35 sensor camera is the equivalent of a 24-105 full frame lens, a really useful zoom range that will be ideal for anyone who’s ever missed a shot because they’ve been changing a lens while the action was inconveniently carrying on without them.

If we're splitting hairs about equivalent field of view (EFV) then this lens give 27.18 - 120.80 EFV on a C300 in terms of 135mm full frame (1.51x). I don't know what you shoot that you often need a wider frame, but that's generally considered to be fairly wide angle. Considering that the only other real option for a similar range is the Canon 24-105mm, this one is a welcome alternative for those wanting a lens that can handle landscape to ISO's in a compact package, with the added benefits of IS options and cine or servo mechanics.

Of course, nothing is perfect and nothing fits everyone's needs. Yours may vary.
