Just announced are Canon’s new 18-80mm T4.4 EF Compact Servo lens and ME200S-SH Multi-Purpose camera.

Weighing in at only 2.65 lbs the 18-80mm was designed for video and is as versatile as it is compact and lightweight. It was developed with full external servo control to control zoom, focus, and iris/aperture and there is also a new optional ZSG-C10 grip to help support different shooting styles. Other features include high level 4K performance, a no step iris mechanism, accessory support, and is parfocal. There is also additional support for use with Canon Cinema EOS cameras. The other announcement Canon made is for the release of their new multi-purpose camera. Built in the same vein as Canon’s 4,000,000 ISO ME20, the ME200 can be configured to tackle just about any pro video scenario such as cinema, television, surveillance, and documentary work. It weighs 2.2 lbs and has dimensions of 4”x4.6”x4.4” (LHW) which allows for numerous builds and use with various camera systems.

What a crazy little camera. It's multi-purpose-ness has me a little confused. Not sure where to place it.
 
It can be nice to see a full color image under moonlight, but perhaps more useful is to shoot under dark exterior light and to be able to do so at a deep iris stop for depth of field. This is certainly not intended to be used as an A-camera for all things, but it is one hell of a B- or C-camera.
 
regarding that servo lens, cool that a more ENG style grip/rocker can be added later. So is powering of the servo via cam..across cam brands?
 
It's definitely more of a puzzle than most cameras since it is a true multi purpose camera and doesn't have a definitive home. From what we've seen with our ME20 it will be a great tool for just about anybody and a $4999 price tag makes the ME200 much more accessible. Mitch is right- it's not meant be an A-camera for every job but the fact that it can tackle cinema work and low light and is seriously compact makes it extremely useful and I'm excited to see how it will be used.
- As a side note, it's also really easy to trick these out with the modular design and, depending on what gear you have floating around or buy for it, can get really creative customizing it.

That is super small and can be controlled remotely. Great for installs and remote multi-camera work. Not every shoot is a person holding a camera. a few of these hooked up to an Apollo will be killer.

But that's a pretty specific niche (with less $$ options) as opposed to "multipurpose" to my mind.

In many ways that niche is way, way bigger than the type of production and shooting that you do on a regular basis. I would guess that fewer than 5% of the functioning video cameras in use in the world today have a person in physical contact operating them (not including cell phones).

If you can mount an EF lens on a non EF mount camera you can power the lens via an external power tap. It does not have to be powered from the EF mount.
 
the lens is far more of interest to me, canon has finally put out a ef mount format power zoom lens in the 'affordable' end of the market!

up until now it's been slim pickings unless you went to camp sony, who have a few power zoom options for s35 sensors.

they also have the pz-e1 and corresponding lens coming at the much lower price point, but i can see a ton of c100/c300 users jumping into the 18-80 as a step up from the ubiquitous 24-105.
 
One thing I always hated is how some products ship so long after they are announced. This one won't be available until Fall. That's like a million days away.

I agree :| Glaciers move faster... In that regards Sony is cool here: products available few weeks after announcement.
