New Cam from Panny HMC Shoulder Mt!

I guess panasonic figured how to output avchd with firewire afterall, wished my hmc 150 had this feature.

“The new camcorder offers the image performance of our HMC40"

Sounds like it's a HMC40 in a shouldermount form factor, and comes with XLR's as standard. Looks much better than the HMC70, which maxed out at 1440x1080 at 13mbps. Hard to tell in the photo but looks like this new one has alot more external buttons as well as a manual focus ring which was probably the biggest omission on the HMC70

Yeah, I originally ignored it because I thought it was going to be an "improved HMC70" but instead it looks like it's a shoulder-mount HMC40. And that's very interesting!

It will be interesting to see some reviews and what it is like in low light. I've often thought about getting another shoulder mount camera. My last one was 'years' ago now, but I'm thinking that it would be worth spending the extra cash on a 2/3" sensor model instead. Just got to keep saving the pennies !

Not too sure if i could get used to that.

I suppose there's a switch then to change the rings function then.

Looking at the pictures on Panasonic's website i cant really see too much. i hope someone in the UK will be renting this camera out.

Very true, button focus and not so good HD video led me to sell the 70 pretty quickly... I was kind of spoiled with the HMC150, and it was just to hard to match the footage.

Being a shoulder mount 40 sounds really good - hopefully better lowlight...

Also neat that it does SD with firewire...

The HMC80 records video in ... 1080/60i, 1080/30p, 1080/24pN, 720/60p, 720/30p, 720/24pN; in HA, HG and HE modes, it records in 1080/60i. In standard definition DV, the camcorder records 480/60i, 480/30p, 480/24p.
It is ironic that progress in flash memory development finally allowed for economical recording a 1995 format onto cheap "tapeless" media. This is a great move from Panasonic, a stab at pitiful MPEG-2 SD mode that Sony implemented on its NXCAM cameras. Hopefully other AVCHD models will also receive DV capability.

But it is a bit surprising that Panasonic uses the lens and sensors from the HMC40 instead of using ones from the TM700. No mention of 1080p60 mode either.

I'd much rather get an HMC40 than this but one things for sure, having 1 manual focusing ring is better than non. I can't believe Panasonic released that camera without a focusing ring and if that wasn't enough, their consumer camcorder at that time had a bit rate that was higher. I really do think the HMC70 was a joke.

It was also apparently a pretty successful unit in selling to its target market -- schools.

It's not all that helpful when people think that their own particular perspective is representative of the entire market as a whole.

The HMC70 did fine, but it had little to no appeal to us DVXUsers. The HMC80 might have a whole lot more appeal, as it's the HMC40 with a shoulder-mount form factor.
