New Apple 12 core Mac Pro and iMac announced

For comparison...
For similar money you can get an HP Z600 workstation with much more options to choose from.
And 3 year onsite warranty is included.
And if you have the bucks, the Z800 hase more PCIe slots and higher memory limit.

Off topic, but here's twice as much for a lot less price. And they're EXCELLENT batteries (rated #1 for *I think* 2 years in a row for rechargeable's) :

...

The Apple battery/charger combo has 6 batteries, not 2. Not that it's a steal or anything but for $29.95 who gives a shi*.

EDIT: Those Eneloop rechargeable batteries are awesome btw.

The new iMac is looking sweet!

Off topic: I hear they had to delay the new iPod Touch 4 because they won't be able to make them fast enough and the iPhone 4 at the same time.

Probably the most interesting thing in that quarterly report, to me at least is...

They sold almost as many iPads as they sold Mac Pros. And iMacs. And Mac Minis. And MacBooks. And MacBook Pros. And MacBook Airs. COMBINED. And it's not like Mac sales were down, they were up 33%!

That's... crazy. All Mac units in total were 3.47 million units, but the iPad by itself was 3.27 million units. I'm sure a lot of that was driven by early-adopter curiosity for the new toy, etc., but it will be very very interesting (to me) if the iPad can match that performance in the next quarterly report. It basically becomes a new platform, and a new paradigm, if one tablet can outsell the entire Mac lineup on a sustained basis. For all the "who would buy that?" questions that were raised, it seems the answer is: "a whole lotta folks."

That's the largest quarter ever for Mac computer shipments.

On the iPad front since we got ours, we've shown it to about a dozen friends, all PC based.

10 have purchased iPads, the latest a 64 GB wifi/3G for use in Shanghai.

Ages range from 18 t0 68.

It's funny everytime apple releases new product how much hate comes from people when it isn't exactly what they want.

If you're working with Mac-only software, then your one and only choice is Apple hardware. (Hackintosh aside, that's a huge can of worms.) So when people want something from a new computer, are locked into a certain vendor, and that vendor doesn't deliver a single one of the simple requests that people have had for some time... yeah, they're going to get angry.

Here's one situation: DaVinci Resolve on the Mac. You have three available PCI-E slots on the new Mac Pro. One goes to your second GPU for the Resolve. One goes to your Decklink card for output. One goes to your eSATA card. One goes to your RED ROCKET card... whoops, can't do that, I've run out of slots. Now I need a second Mac Pro.

If they had included eSATA ports on the darn thing, I could have one computer for ingest/debayering and colour correction/output. Now I'll need two computers, one for each task. For an extra 5 grand.

Heck, even if it had USB3.0, that could replace the Decklink card.

Barry,

What little I know today is iPad sales are accelerating, LG can't make the screens fast enough, Apple is going to have to delay the releases in more countries but the best thing for Apple is the other screen manufactures are baling out on making knock off touch panel tablets (because they don't want to gamble against the iPad for a product that might go under 12 months later) and are going to start making parts for the iPads instead of building tablets for other competitors.

Read this, most analysts are projecting 12-13 million iPad sales by the end of 2010.

For that price, I'd expect a BluRay burner on the base model.

But, maybe they're thinking that since there will never be Apple software to burn a BD...

I have ALWAYS been a hardcore extreme PC guy, when the phenomena happened that made me go to the Apple store and buy an iPad I new they were onto something big, so big I started a development company around it 6 months ago.

20,000 people surveyed in the link below, it sums it up for both sides.

I hate to admit it but I have more than one iPad :)

EDIT: Sorry for taking it off topic guys but thought Apples success might be of interest here.

EDIT #2: Wired re edited a lot out of that article, I just went back to read it again and 70% of it is missing, I bet they pissed off a lot of their readers about the demographics of the iPad haters.

EDIT #3: This is a better link to read than the above Wired Magazine link (same survey): http://mytype.com/blog/?p=109

I really wish they would add an ExpressCard slot to the iMac. I would have bought one by now if it had that.

there is no denying that apple is rackin' in the dough, love him or hate him, steve jobs knows how to make money, what company wouldn't want him running their company

what would be the difference with an ATI 5750 vs nvidia cuda for video, is there a big difference ?
just wondering because i was thinking to get one of those iMac, but i may just end building a new windows machine again.
