New Apple 12 core Mac Pro and iMac announced

New 12 core Mac Pro starting at $4999 (ouch), comes with new GPU as well. New iMac announced (speed bump) and 27" widescreen Apple cinema display $999. $69 Apple touch pad that is pretty much the giant version of MBP touchpad for your desktop. All at the Apple website.

No regrets for not waiting for the new line. They bumped up the 8 core base price to $3499. Let me guess; it will still crash when scrubbing through HD footage in log & transfer, wont handle a simple MP3 file imported into a sequence(my old imac g5 was better handling that), will have to be forced to quit for proress transfer of long clips spanned onto multiple clips.

They are using the new E series Westmere 4 core processors which are the same price as the previous Nehalim 4 core processors. So why the huge price jump?
If they were using the X versions I could see it.

this is a huge letdown for myself, I've been looking forward to the new mac pro, I still have the 8 core 2008 model (working superb) but this new price point is just too much for the small update :(

What would you like to see insofar as new features are concerned?

Or just lower prices?

USB3 would be an attractive option, but with four available internal drive bays, it isn't that important to me.

The ATI Radeon HD 5870 card looks like a good BTO.

But what did every one want?

As far as big Iron is concerned I'd like to see few more pci express slots. USB 3.0 would be OK but I'd prefer to see a couple of esata ports.

Mostly I've just been waiting for an update to purchase. Still, now I'm thinking if their top of the line model can't have the basics that a $800 PC notebook has then maybe it's time to give up on Final Cut Pro and switch hardware and software. Apple's just too busy counting the money coming in from portable devices to give a dam about their roots.

It's funny everytime apple releases new product how much hate comes from people when it isn't exactly what they want.

Which $800 PC laptop exceeds the specs of the top new Mac Pro?

I'd switch if that existed.

I believe he was saying there's more connectivity with a $800 PC... not that it's better then a top new Mac Pro.
That would be comparing Apples to Oranges!:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
(...and you'd have to spend more like $1800 on a comparable PC)

Your original question was what features did we want to see.

Clearly and $800 laptop's not going to outgun any current mac pro. Features wise I just bought my son a clearance Sony Viao that has an esata port, hdmi and express card slot. It's an awesome portable production computer. If a notebook manufacturer has the gumption to fit these in a notebook, then I'd like to see Apple have the gumption to put them in it's top of the line computer.

I'm just saying adding some of the features that come on $5 chip would be awesome on a $5000 computer.

While I could really care less what Apple releases, I can CERTAINLY understand the frustration from people involved in video when a new machine north of $2k-$3k doesn't include simple basics like an eSATA port.

Additionally, with CS5, Avid, Red Giant, and others specifying CUDA cards for doing video work, putting in a card that's not in any way compatible seems to just rub salt in the wound.

Oh well, I'll slink back over to PC world (and enjoy my freedom to choose).

I'm just responding to your post.

If the lack of USB3 ports on the new MacPros is enough to switch platforms and editing software, I say go for it. At least that is what I thought you were saying because PCI-E slots can't be added to a laptop.

You can add eSATA for under $50.00.

HDMI provides me with nothing because it isn't a color accurate external feed. And you can buy a $5.00 DA to HDMI adapter.

In any case, these discussions generally go nowhere, providing too much smoke and not enough light.

It's just a discussion. I'm not sure where it's supposed to go other than stating what we'd hoped for.

Anyway, yes esata can be added for $50.00 and then it takes an slot. I'm sure the chipset costs $5-10 so why not put it on the board and save us the slot for something else.

For me things like no USB 3, no eSATA and no CUDA on top of the price point makes it a very unattractive box for my needs as well as my company's needs. Yes, some things can be added via PCI slots but then the Mac Pro only has three slots open so getting things like USB 3 built into the mobo would be nice. At work most of the machines have 2 slots filled (BM card and Fibre card) and at least one machine has all three slots filled.

Just as an aside the Mac Pro update isn't mentioned on Apple's main page nor is it mentioned on the "Mac" page. The only place the MacPro update is mentioned, at least currently, is on the Mac Pro page.

I agree that it would be great to have USB3 and external SATA. If I need those, I can buy a board. SATA boards are cheap, and combined USB/SATA boards with Mac drivers should be out soon.

The point being, I can add these items if I need them. I would venture that some users do need them, and others do not. But you are prevented from getting them.

Add either to an iMac, and you have one helluva editing machine, especially the 27 inch i7.

Video cards are different matter. BTO, and get the one you want and can afford.

But I don't see this as a reflection of Apple's distain for its base layer. I can't attribute an anthropomorphic aspect to Apple's decisions.

As I said in another thread, I was so overwhelmed with the new releases today, I bought one: the $29.95 battery charger.

My problem is not the price, I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for
my issue is justifying the price compared to the previous model, for example
I have a 2008 8 core mac pro, it can hang just fine with everything that we use now a days
red footie, p2, cs5, etc
maybe I was looking for a reason to upgrade, and thankfully now with this update I know my mac pro is not going anywhere

I don't get the $200.00 increase either.

These are faster processors, but the pricing should have stayed the same or dropped.

It is a better video card, though, than the GT120.
