new 5d Mark 3?

When do you think they will announce the new Canon 5D Mark 3? In which respect will it be regarding its video capabilities?

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa....................................Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa............................

I've been wondering if canon will bring out a camcorder to compete with the af100 and fs100 ...
or beef up the video specs on 5d mark3 and 7d mark2.

For example ... if they just added two things, a decent OPLF and HD-SDI out, it would upset the market quite a bit.

OPLF? Then just how do you think people would be able to take high res photos? Ain't gonna happen.

A better OLPF won't help the 5D or 7D because the space between the sampling is too high. Somebody already tried replacing the OLPF and the results were not good. The amount you'd need to basically blur the image would make it WAY TOO soft. The only solution is sampling ALL the pixels.

Since a 7d mark 2 would have a smaller sensor then its moire and aliasing can at least be brought under control to match the gh2. Or better it.

A 5dm3 could really benefit from a windowed area for video that matches aps-c and an EF mount that can hold EF-s lenses as well. But its probably pipe dreams ...

Totally agree. But sampling all the pixels would be a tall order. I guess this is where scientific creativity comes in.
I do think however that Canon needs to come to the table soon. If they step out of their traditional market cycle of 3 years come this August, I believe many people will start to move on.
Which isn't a bad thing for us, just not good for them.
Based on the kind of work that comes my way this year, the F3 would definitely be in my sights.
If I am gonna move up, it's gonna be 10 bit and and APS-C style sensor that's gonna make me take the leap.
The 5D's will still be used though, because more than any advances in cameras, it's multi-cam which has made the difference in my business, and that has only become an affordable proposition with the advent of DSLR's.

My best guess (which is all it is) is that the 5D3 will be announced August +/- a couple of weeks for shipping in late September / October. But, like the rest of us, it's a guess. Any one who knows for sure can't saying anything due to NDAs.

We can all speculate on what features will or will not be included, but what's the point? It will be what it will be and until it's announced we'll continue to work happily with the 5D2/7D/60D/550D all of which will also still work after the announcement too. I'll be very interested in the specs WHEN they're officially released, but until then I'm not bothering with the rumours because they mean nothing.

Is it really that far fetched to think Canon might do something like an AF100, FS100 when they are pretty much their in sensor size and functions. Clearly the current body wouldn't work but something more along the new Red, Epic I believe is the model I'm think of, doesn't that camera have stills capabilities? Just asking, I don't know squat but it doesn't seem so unrealistic to me. They gotta be looking at something completely new and "out of the box" to gain back lost of the "HD video or indie film market", the stills guys are there still to my knowledge. Probably not gonna happen but it would definitely be nice, lol....

Canon WILL do something like the AF100/FS100, it's just a matter of when. They're historically late to the table with video cameras (excluding dlsrs of course). Rep I talked to at NAB hinted that they had nothing on the table, but understood the importance of the market. Maybe mid 2012?
On the other hand the 7D/5D2 still own the indie video market by volume of users, even though there are much better cameras so maybe it isnt a priority yet.

As a still and video content creator, I believe Canon is in a strange spot. The still photographer side of me does not need to upgrade from the 5DMKII. 22MP is plenty of resolution, the images are very detailed and the color after RAW processing in Lightroom is just spot on. So a MKIII version is a tough sell for me for still work unless they can really improve the noise performance - like ISO 800 looking like ISO 200 of old etc...

Now for video, I would like to see some advances, but I do not need it to be in the same camera body. They would have a better product if they took a lower MP count sensor and sampled every pixel to create a nice video image, but this would kill the still body. So I think it would be wise to separate the two products but I don't think that will fly with marketing. So we will probably wind up with a 32MP still camera with some sort of downsample voodoo to get a 1080p video signal. It will I'm sure be better than the MKII so I guess all will be well except pricing will probably be higher than the MKII, just a guess.

This all sounds about right. I doubt they will go to 32 MP though. However, I think if there is no August/September announcement they will have a problem because they will have gone beyond their traditional market cycle and I think people will begin to jump ship.

Why the doubt? 32 not only sounds legit tech wise, but also more or less confirmed by now.

Actually, anything less than 30 would be a pretty big disappointment (and, very very odd).

We're at 5k video now. Keep up... ;)

Totally why I hate these damn pixel wars. You know what was great about 35mm? It was a standard and, with a few exceptions (65mm, ect.), it stuck. Companies just worked to improve 35mm and that was it. Wouldn't it be great if they could just release another 24mp camera with better noise performance, more lattitude, ect?

+ 1

It's a pretty for sure thing they'll end up using their Canon XF format for the next cameras to match the workflow of their other cameras. The best I could ask for is a proper down-sample of the large image to an HD signal so there's no line skipping. There's way more that would improve it as a video type camera, but there's a ton of good work arounds everyone seems ok with now, so the proper down-sample is my greatest want.

Canon should follow Sony and Panasonic's example. They should split the line and build a camera that is like the AF100 & NEX FS100... with the ability to take stills AND a decent stills camera.
Going mirrorless/EVF on still camera is a fail but essential for a decent no-compromise video camera.

Just my opinion ... as a pro photog.

I don't think that pixel war will end any time soon though and one of the reasons being that something like 99% of people thinks that more pixels equals better camera.

btw I'm sure we will not see MKIII until next year. Either just before the summer or in the fall.
