FS7: New 2.1 firmware

I've only seen the angle issue pop up a couple times, and I switch quite a bit... I guess I'm a bit lucky. That said, it's still a very silly problem for this camera to have. Doug needs to stop defending Sony with the whole "you just need to pay attention! A good shooter wouldn't let that slip by him/her!" response. It's the camera not behaving in an expected manner. By your logic, it would be OK for the camera to just jump to random white balance/ISO/frame rate every time you cut a take. Because you're going to double check and verify every last setting before rolling again, right? And a few seconds here and there to adjust a random change doesn't matter! I just think it's a silly thing to defend Sony on.

I think it crosses a line to tell Doug what his opinion should be. I don't always agree with Doug's opinions myself, but there's a distinction between not agreeing with someone's opinion and telling them they are obligated to change their opinion. I personally think it's possible that Doug doesn't fully appreciate how much of a problem this is, because, as he admits, he hasn't personally been affected by it.

I'd love to change Doug's mind on this, but I don't think calling him out is the way to do it, nor do I think it's in the respectful spirit with which we should approach this forum.

Fair enough. He doesn't need to change his opinion, but in the spirit of community, I think we're better off if we can sympathize with each other rather than make excuses for the company and blame the operator.

I'm going to jump back into this to say a couple of things and then I will disappear back into the sunset.

James, thanks for your comments and, believe it or not, I agree with most of what you wrote in your earlier post #91.

I do not defend Sony and their support on the FS7 sucks. If I was in their shoes I'd be ashamed of how they have ignored their customers and continually failed to address the most basic issues. In my opinion, the camera is riddled with all kinds of problems that are bigger and more important that some crazy shutter bug that doesn't even affect everyone. All I'm saying, if anyone cares to listen, is so what? You deal with what you have. There is nothing about the camera right now that prevents it from producing great images and being a reliable tool. I use the camera all the time and it has never screwed me over. Like all cameras, I keep my eyes on the displays in the viewfinder and would instantly know if something was amiss. It is called being a professional and the camera isn't going to catch me off guard. And as far as I know, the problems that people are bitching about are not very random. You can predict when and how the camera will screw you on a shoot, right? So just be aware. Watch for it and prevent it. Should you have to? Absoluetly not! But I deal in reality and focus on getting the job done not whining on a forum that is not even monitored by Sony. Contact Sony directly and make your voice heard. Send a letter. Make a phone call. Put together a petition, but do something other than preaching to the choir here. A lot of F65 owners banded together a few years ago and they got action. In some cases, complete refunds if they wanted it. If you feel strongly enough that Sony has ripped you off, get a refund and move on. If Sony fixes the problems at some point that will be great, but in the mean time I really don't care. Flame away, because I don't care about that either.

Back to the sunset . . .

People are using this forum to talk about the best step forward with regards using the Sony forum and/or trying to enact a change or fix. And then once they get there they find you're over there telling people to just deal with it and be a professional too.

This isn't flaming you Doug. This is a bunch of people saying they have a problem with their camera and you are not only not helping them, you are actively getting in the way of them trying to get Sony to sort it. Whatever yo do with that information is up to you, but personally if I thought for a millisecond I was doing that I would leave them to it and not muddy the waters when a clear direct and unified line of communications is paramount to achieving a successful outcome.

You have made your point. Repeatedly. Everyone understands your position on the subject and thanks you for you input. But just because you made a training video it doesn't make you Yoda and people are as free to completely disregard your posts and opinions as they are anyone else's.

I've had the shutter bug in angle trip me up a couple of times during a documentary series I'm shooting. Happens going from HFR and back. If I have been in a hurry to change back from HFR i've sometimes not noticed the 300 degree shutter until a couple of shots later. This has been my occupation for over 15 years so I think I can call my self a professional, but this camera still can trip me up. Let's hope it's fixed next time

You folks do realize that there is no official US notice for the 2.1 firmware on their FS7 forum page? 2.0 is the last official notice. Perhaps Sony US is not happy with the update.

And yes, they should fix the shutter bug ASAP.

Y'all be cool,
Robert

Ha. I'll say slow... or maybe just checked-out on long holiday :2vrolijk_08:
I find more valuable info on forums from other owners (and even other vendors) than I do directly from Sony.

I'd be really grateful if Sony would figure out a way to give us Auto Face Focus Tracking on the FS7 in the next firmware version.
I understand that feature is considered more for consumer cameras and that the FS7 has it's roots in the pro F5/F55 Family,
however I'm often working by myself and it would be a great relief to see the little box around someone's face in the viewfinder,
and know that's one less thing to worry about. (It's also another selling point for using Sony AF lenses on this camera).

Just makes the waveforms work in the viewfinder.

My FS7 arrived on Friday and already I'm considering a DP502. We bought an ex Demo unit that had the outputs reconfigured and it took me an embarrassing amount of time to align all the stars to get the waveform up. I have a worry the waveform issue won't be solved as I think the processing in the FS7 is right on the limit, that's why the camera is priced the way it is.

I don't think the processing is a on the limit at all to be honest. I think that's the cop out Sony answer whereas I reckon it's priced the way it is because there is little intention of supporting it properly with a dedicated team.

I feel foolish. I've updated my FS7 twice since I've owned it but now I am having a problem with uploading 2.10. Can you do a basic run through as to how to download the firmware, which file(s) to select and the protocol for using the SD card for the upload?
Thanks!

How do the F5 and f55 compare? Do they show waveforms in all modes?

Yes.

You should have TWO files after you unzip the download and then put them on an SD card. These two files are .bin and .md5

Many MAC users make the mistake of unzipping the md5 file but do not do this.

Sony provides manual for the update. I would always follow that, as the process can change slightly by each update.

It was two things. The unzipping but more than that I didn't go to the right area for the upload. I was cruising SD file world when I should have been in System Version.
And I didn't realize part of the download was a set of easily understood instructions. Did this the last time but just bloody forgot.
All's right with the western world..

What is the "shutter bug"?
ive had my FS7 since January but have only had it on about a half dozen jobs so I haven't really the camera through its paces.
Havent incurred shutter issues (that I know of).

If you hit the S&Q button to jump between 24fps and 60fps, sometimes the shutter angle will jump from 180º (where it should be locked) to angles like 210º and 300º. This can result in blurrier slow motion.
