New 150-- A quicky questions

Got my new order from B&H. I'm looking over the cam while watching the Douglas Spotted Eagle DVD and I hear him say that when you're using an external mic (shotgun) EVEN with battery power in the mic, you should set the switches to use phantom power????

I've always been under the assumption that if my mic (and I frequently use 2 shotguns on my dvx100) has a battery, then I set the switch to NO phantom power. If my mic has no battery, then set my switch for that channel to provide phantom power. He's saying if you're not using the internal mic, then use the phantom power all the time?????

Is he right? Phantom power on.....even if I'm using my Seinhieser wireless lavs?

I see no logic in that. Phantom power provides 48v to power a microphone (usually a condenser mic) with DC through the microphone cable. If the microphone does not need this, why do this? If anything I would figure this would eat the battery on the camera more quickly.

I think the logic was, it provides consistant power that you can monitor ( cam battery level ) and if your mic battery goes during a shoot, you're still gonna have audio.
I was just wondering if there was a down side.....as in screwing up your mic or getting too hot a recording etc.

Suggest that unless you really need to power from the mic battery, that you power from the cam. Better power, less hassle when things get low.. Yes it will drain the cam battery more quickly.

A better use for the mic battery is if you want to use it with a non-phanton wireless kit.
