hi there...

im a bit confused in regards to what lens i want to get...

i shoot videos for weddings using a Canon 7d..

i have the following lenses at the moment...

Tokina 11 - 16
Canon 50mm 1.4
Canon 70 - 200 2.8

I am looking at either getting a Canon 17-55 f/2.8 or a 24-70 f/2.8 or a 30mm prime?

i run off a bogen monopod, slider, 503 tripod and a steadycam merlin and arm vest..

the 24-70 would cover the gap .... the non-is is not an issue due to stabilisers...

any suggestions would be fantastic... or if there is any other lenses i have missed?

also wanting to get a lens that can do close up shots of things....

thanks.

If your looking for another zoom then be careful with the tamron 17-50 f2.8, make sure you get to test your copy as there are some duds out there. If your looking for a prime in the 30mm range why not the canon 28mm f1.8?

Just checked what photozone wrote about the 28 1.8, tested on "C" crop sensor. Vignetting not too bad, but resolution rather dodgy (Esp the edges) and CA horrendous. They gave it 2 stars (Out of 5) for optical quality and value.

I just picked up a Canon 24 2.8 today. I've been looking at it for a while as a low cost sharp prime that covers FF and faster than a zoom. So far it looks worth it.
I also had the 17-40 on the counter, but my gut said get the prime today. faster, sharper, half the price and half the size to drag around with all my other junk. I still have half the money toward another prime.

Stick with the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS if you can afford it. It's a !@#$* fantastic lens, you'll shoot a million shots with it and it will still be worth what you paid for it in the end.

It will end up stuck to your Canon a good part of the time for weddings, I guarantee it.

Rent one if you can for your next job, you'll be hooked.

That is funny, Ken Rockwell loves that lens (he is a bit strange though).

Don't knock (or needle) Ken, we have all dined out on his technical lens & camera information, which is, IMO, factual to a fault.

He prints free DSLR guides which many of us use as valuable supplements, and has accurate reviews for almost every lens ever made.

I, and you, (and the haters), always look forward to his next review, let's not lie :) His reviews are interesting BECAUSE he's opinionated. That's a storytelling lesson for us here; it's called having a point of view.

Your scripts and shots and edits will suffer (be boring actually) without having a strong focal point, that grabs you, and either pisses you off or makes you ecstatic.

(BTW, I know that's not really a knock, just a gentle needle, but I will always rise to the occasion to defend Ken.)
