Need Help w/ External Monitor

I have an external monitor that I bought from someone on another website, and I can't seem to get it connected to my T2i.

1. Is it only possible to use external monitors via HDMI?

2. Is it possibly to use them via AV cables?

The only ports it has are the 9 Volt battery port/charging port, RF IN, Left & Right Audio Ports, and the Video Port, aka red, yellow, white AV ports, and an earphones port.

Can someone please further assist me on how to get this working properly with my T2i?

Thanks in advance!

you would get solid answers if you post the brand and model of your monitor, and even faster answers if you post pictures.

Your camera has a manual and will show you how to connect it to a monitor.

Based on your description of the ports, its an SD only monitor. So its not as good as an Hi res monitor and not so useful for critical focusing.

Its a portable TV since its got a tuner. Its Standard Def only so you need to look for the AV cable of your camera since it wont accept HDMI.
The AV cable is composite SD signal.
This is only good for framing and will be 'almost' useless in situations where critical focusing is important.

If you use fast lenses at full open say 1.4 or 2.8 it would be very very risky. In such scenario you'd probably be safer using your cam's small LCD with a finder that give good magnification.

I'll only be using it for playing back; I use my LCDVF for critical focusing.

The guy I bought it from was using it with his 7D, so I assume it is compatible with the 550D. The only port that remotely resembles AV cables is the AV OUT DIGITAL, and my AV cables' OUT doesn't fit the port.

Edit: It fits the mic port perfectly (is that size) if that would be helpful.

Do you have Magic Lantern installed? HDMI and AV both can send out signal for playback, but not HD live view.

Yes, I have Magic Lantern, and am aware they can send signals for playback (what I'm using), but I'm asking if anyone knows about how to get them connected with the T2i.

There's a cable that came with the T2i - one end looks somewhat like a mini-USB, the other end has the usual A/V jacks. It plugs into the AV OUT DIGITAL port. You'll lose the LCD screen when plugged in.

You can download the manual for the T2i from Canon, search around.

IKAN is pretty cheap. I keep renting them but I wouldn't spend the money to buy one. Color terrible right out of the box and the image is not that bright. That's on the 7". HDMI input.

I like the DP6. Google it. $899 but it's HD. I need it for critical focusing.

That's your issue, Magic Lantern's audio monitoring breaks USB and HDMI. There are 2 builds of ML for this reason, if you switch to the "NoAudioMon" version then you will lose the audio bars, but you will regain your USB and HDMI live functions. And then you will be able to use monitors in live view, but still on in SD (T2i isn't capable of HD live while recording, the 7D can since it has dual processor).

Are there any monitors that are for live view, that connect via HDMI, and are cheap?

Lots of people are using the lilliputs with HDMI for a couple hundred bucks. If you can scrape enough dollars together for the 5" Marshall ($500-550) or something from SmallHD (more $$) it's about the best investment you can make. The cheap ones use LCDs made for viewing in cars. They can't be calibrated and some of them have really whacked viewing angles - you can't trust 'em for exposure. The Marshall has blue-only, and is a really great little screen. You can grab a blackmagic card for under $200 and use it when you edit - the small pro screens are not big enough to edit with, but you can use it as a color reference while your edits run on your computer monitor. Great way to get closer to a pro monitoring setup for way under a grand.

Yeah, I came up on those Lilliputs while looking around on Cheesycam.

Also, I've actually been wanting to start using an external monitor, so I'll look more into that. Thanks!
