ND Filter Stepdown Question

I'm planning to buy a polaroid variable ND for my GH2 and I'm trying to decide what size to buy. I have the panasonic 14-140 (62mm filter size) and I have a few olympus OM lens (49mm filter size). Is there any reason I shouldn't just buy the 77mm filter and a bunch of stepdown rings? I've heard that you can get vignetting from the ND filters and so oversized ones are better. I'll probably buy a few cannon and nikon lense later, but I don't think they'll be bigger than 62mm filter size.

Taaltrek,

Buying oversize variable ND filters works fairly well with one exception - the lens hood. One issue with using larger ND filters (and even some same-size ND filters) is that the lens hoods don't fit after the ND filter is installed. While this may not be a problem indoors with appropriate light control, it can be a major problem outside. Which I discovered a week ago while in Belize.

Regards,

Dan.
