GH5 ND filter for video: I look for a good filter for gh5

So, you read a post from 1 guy that says that GH5 makes better images than the EVA1 and you take it for granted?

Yes, because he is a professional filmaker but I don't trust him 100%. What is certain is that I do not trust 100% on the things that are written in the forums. ;)

I am sure the GH5 comes with Italian manuals why do you read the English ones ? Using a camera for 40 years in automatic is not understanding the basic knowledge. You have demonstrated repeatedly to us that you do not understand the basic relationships of the parameters otherwise you would not keep asking for advice on what to set as if you understood you would know how to set the camera up for any particular situation. Also know how to share the exposure task between ND, shutter speed , iris and gain/iso to achieve the effect you want. When you used your AX100 it was in automatic and that is why you ran into problems of the camera using too high a shutter speed because it had the wrong ND filter engaged if you can remember that of over a year ago. I think you were shooting UHD 25P so a high shutter speed would result in unnatural motion. That's why there is the 180 rule so that there is motion blur.

The way to avoid being fooled by reports on the internet is to understand. That requires study and work on your part. Unfortunately there is no short cut. You have to do the work unless you want to shoot with an automatic camcorder and be good most of the time but not great.

I don't know if you are referring to me but I will tell you this: I do my homework, I shoot, learn, shoot again, learn some more and if something is beyond my knowledge I can admit it and move on or hire someone that is better than me.

The fact that you say (think) you understand the basics shows us that you don't know what are the basics all about.
The big problem is that you underestimate the knowledge/experience required to be a DP. As long as you keep minimizing the work and knowledge of a DP, you will never learn. Shooting in automatic mode does NOT show you the basics.

Me too I do it because I will go to Africa again in April.

Please don't reply me anymore because you don't understand me. Don't waste your time with me. With my GH5 I never shot in automatic mode, not even once.

Ron is 100% right.
Now, after saying that you don't like to learn, why in hell are you still coming here for answers if it's not to find a magical solution to your ''problems''.

Because people keep responding to his questions. :)

Please stop waisting our time if you're not willing to learn.

Fox is not wasting anyone's time. People read and respond to his posts voluntarily. So they waste their time themselves, if indeed they consider it a waste of time. I find it entertaining.

That is exactly what I am going to do, because you said it right, I am wasting my time. Good luck!

Maybe did Doug_EX take offense with his words? Sorry for it. But he writes things that I have never said or wrote.

I am saying that it's waste of time because people have to take time to read through his posts and are actually hoping that their tips and advice will help him, but he doesn't seem to acknowledge it. This, is a waste of people's time.

I shot in automatic only with Sony AX100. When people here told me I need use GH5 in manual, I follow their suggestions and I don't have any shot in automatic.

That is actually my point. You are used to shooting in automatic mode (before having the GH5). You are shooting in manual mode now because people told it would be better. This is not proof that you know the basics.

Here is a video that shows some of the basics.

Fox,
Would you be willing to try some controlled tests with your Variable ND. I'm 99% sure this isn't the problem, but it's hard to know what your problem is when there are so many potential variables.

Once you understand the exposure triangle, a variable ND will be your best friend shooting in challenging, harsh sunny conditions. (Coming from a guy who just spent 4 months in Kenya doing just that.)

Fox - check this out, Italian Manual: https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/dscoi/DC-GH5/EG_EC_EF_EB/DC-GH5_DVQP1124ZB_ita.pdf
Much easier to get it when its in your native language.

Also, I agree with Joe12 above. Run some tests and post the footage. I too was in Africa last year and the Vari ND was a lifesaver.

Also, a true video camera might be your best bet. I used to use the Canon FX300 for event work and loved it. I moved to the GH4 and GH5
as I was doing larger productions ith a crew... but even now when I have to do a true run & gun / 1-man-band shoot with NO time to fix
anything I wish I had that old camera. I know Canon has a XF400 and the new XF700 and Sony make a bunch like the PXW-Z190.

Thanks for your help. I can't make some tests in my country because every clip look perfect. My problem was only in Africa. African GH5 settings: 400 ISO, 1/100 shutter, 5.6 diaframma, 50p. I used "Natural" preset but I lowered the contrast and the sharpness, both at -1 and Luminance level 16-235. Maybe the biggest error was those "400" ISO. With 400 ISO I had to close a lot the variable ND filter and it gave me a polarizing effect. Maybe with 100 ISO I didn't get those problems. It seems incredible, I didn't get one right clip in Africa. Every clip was crazy: chromatism, color saturation and exposure.

Be sincere please: how much different is the image you get with the videocamera compared to GH5? I used Sony AX100 (4K) for some years and I didn't not like it anymore. I always got good images but a plastic-like appearance clips even if I used it in manual. Some guys here are telling me its image is very similar to GH5 if I configure fine AX100. Could I know your thinking?
Thanks

"When I was in Africa I shot for some hours (around 5-6 hours) I didn't get not even one clip correctly exposed. All my clips have a brown, underexposed and with reddish dominant."

"in your opinion how can I decrease that the browsnish colour while I'm shooting in Africa? Thanks for your suggestions. For me they are important.

Sounds like our OP needs an IR cut.

There's nothing magic about Africa...or at least nothing magic about shooting there. ;-) I've been on every continent other than Antartica, and I promise that if you can get a proper exposure in midday sun wherever you are now, you can do it in Africa.

If I recall, you're shooting a high frame rate, right? If so, with a proper shutter angle and a good ND (which you have) you shouldn't need to go below 400ISO. If you dip your sensitivity lower than that, you will begin to lose dynamic range, so it is better to control the exposure with the ND if you can.

All you are helping me with theory but nobody tells me where I was wrong with my shoots. I wrote a lot about how I used GH5 in Africa. I need someone to tell me where I was wrong because I think I have used GH5 perfectly perfectly.

If you could do controlled tests and post images, then I could better help. As it is, all I know is that something you are saying does not compute.
