GH5 ND filter for video: I look for a good filter for gh5

Doug, you got the same my result. But how can you tell me it is a good image? It has dense colors. It's a bad and unwatchable clip. Anyway I thank you for your help.

Can you share a frame of your graded footage of this same clip?

Adriano, it may be a language issue but the rest of us are trying to find out what you think is wrong with the image. To us it is not that bad at all and with a little grading will be fine. We just need to know what you are trying to change. Is it too dark. Or are the colours too intense. We do not know and you are not explaining what you want . We do not know what you find ugly.

But I can't understand how you can say that clip has almost nothing wrong. It 'a very dense of colors and despite being treated you can't get a good image. I had to increase the brigthness + 40. Do you think it's normal? All my clips are like that. Finally: even if that clip is treated in its colous, it is as horrible as all the others.

We didn't say it was perfect, we said that it is a usable image. Nothing off that is not possible to recover.

Well, this is a operator error. Your image is underexposed, exposed properly and this won't happen. But like I said, it's not that much off that it's not possible to recover.

Change the color profile in camera maybe?

Adriano, you once again convince us you do not understand either to expose the camera for the shot or how to grade the image afterwards. You do not use brightness to bring up a part of the image that is too dark or to lighten the colour. Brightness in Edius is a very crude tool. You should at least use the YUV filter. If you want fine control you would need to use a mask on the part you want to change with multiple filters. In Resolve it is easier to make the fine adjustments. For instance in either Resolve or Edius it is possible to lighten the skin of the girls, take down the colour of the ground and brighten the sky etc. Even apply different sharpness to all those separately. That is why we are saying the image is fine as a starting point.

A simple levels adjustment to bring the image to full range makes it pop quite nicely. If you look at the scopes it's peaking around 80 ire. Without masks you can't keep the sky and expose for their skin tones. Doug's crop would be a great starting point to get to telling the story you probably want from that image anyway.

Why is the top end so limited with that bright sky in the background? Might you have some highlight setting mixed up that is limiting the top end? Not sure what is to be expected from under exposing in flat light in the middle of the day at ISO 800 with a sky that covers 1/3rd of the image. There's no cam in the world that can get all that without some sort of hdr recording going on.

To me the image fits the story perfectly. It's a pretty mundane task, fetching water. What image/look could possibly tell that story of their lives any better?

Nothing personal, but you seem to be whining about the image when your whole piece should be in the story you're trying to tell. If you don't have a story, there's no image that can fix that.

Cheers,
Pete

No, it is an error of GH5, not of the operator. All my clips look the same. I shot with 180° rule. You should tell me I have to use my GH5 trick in that environment. If you had to tell me it I would understand you.

The problem is the GH5 because your images are underexposed???
Who cares about the 180 degree rule? This is for controlling motion blur. It's not a magical number for exposing your shots right.

Sorry Adriano the problem is not the GH5 it is you. The 180 rule is just to control image blur and is only one of the parameters you have to use to control the exposure. You need then to set the aperture ( iris ), iso/gain, and how you set the ND filter. You can use the waveform monitor to see how you are setting these as well as zebras to get the best exposure to maximize the recorded image for future grading. Using different combinations will result in a different character to the image too. When you understand how to do this you can get more dynamic range using V-Log-L that you can buy to enable on the GH5. When you were using your AX100 in full automatic the Sony engineers had pre programmed how the camera would use all these parameters to get the best image. Most of the time they got it correct.

This is one of the weirdest threads I've ever seen. Looks like a bunch of guys arguing with a computer program that's stuck in a loop over the number 180. AI with some deficiency in the I department, which normally should be an easily fix with some corrective programming....

Consider it a piece of performance art and it will give you hours of pleasure. I've been wondering how long Fox could string us along. So far, so good.

In at least three forums for over a year. First deciding to move from the AX100 to get better image quality, then buy the GH5 then how to operate !!! l should have given up a long time ago !!!

The members' patience on this thread and the forum for that matter is admirable...this thread seems like some bizarre form of trolling though!

You can see from his WEB site he has shot a lot of video. He has a vision of improved image quality which led to him wanting to change his camcorder for something better. This is how it started a year ago. Unfortunately his vision is way beyond his capabilities to both shoot and grade to this vision. So this is the result of his attempts to improve without all the effort to learn to do both coming from a full automatic camcorder which only in extremes got it wrong and they too may have been operator error. The clips he has posted here are not bad enough that most of us could not recover I am sure.

Do you know why this thread lasts a long time? Every guy here is writing I am the problem with GH5 but nobody tells me where I make the error. Nobody tells me why I take good shots in my country but not in Africa. I wrote many times I shot with 180° rule and now a guy is writing that my error is I don't control motion blur. I wrote many times I shot 5.6 or 8 exposure and 1/100 in Africa but nobody told me what was my error. Yes, everything is very strange here because I think I didn't make any error in Africa. All my clips look underexposed. If I am the problem, the next time I will send another filmaker to take my documentary. ahahaha

Fox,
1. Clearly a big part of the problem is a language barrier.
2. Tell me what you think is wrong with the clip. Specifically. You're clearly disappointed, but I don't know why. I don't know what you think the camera is doing wrong.

I wrote many times I shot with 180° rule and now a guy is writing that my error is I don't control motion blur.
Nobody said that you ''don't control motion blur''. Obviously, language is a big problem here. I said that the shutter angle (in your case, 180 degree) is a setting that control motion blur more than exposure. Do you know what motion blur is?

I wrote many times I shot 5.6 or 8 exposure and 1/100 in Africa but nobody told me what was my error.
We don't know because we weren't there. And, after I don't know how many posts, you still can't tell us what is wrong with your footage. this is a big problem.

Yes, everything is very strange here because I think I didn't make any error in Africa.
Good for you then.

If I am the problem, the next time I will send another filmaker to take my documentary.
That's what I am trying to tell you for the past few weeks. No joke here. You should indeed have a DP with you that actually knows what he is doing.

Do you know why this thread lasts a long time?
Oh my god, yes!

Every guy here is writing I am the problem with GH5 but nobody tells me where I make the error.
Well, if everybody is telling you that you are at fault, you should probably listen to them.
I will tell you where you made an error, it's when you decided to not listen to us and not willing to learn how to shoot properly and learning the basics of shooting.

Can this thread be deleted? Seriously, this thread isn't going anywhere and clearly it didn't help the OP.
