NAB "Show *****" Day - You Tell Me What You Want To See And I'll Make It Happen!

Thanks for doing this! Can you please see if there are any cheap, good quality high cri (95+) LEDs? 1x1s or bigger. Thanks

Christian,

My head is swimming with LED light information. I'll do a more complete write-up later, but there are some really nice looking units coming out. Now, "good" and "cheap" are often at odds with each other, especially when you ask for high CRI numbers. But I really like the stuff that LiteGear is showing (LED flexible mats, FauxFlo tubes, etc.), as well as Cineo (not cheap) and Westcott Flex (not cheap, but not unreasonably priced).

There's a boatload of Chinese LED companies here, with varying degrees of cheapness and quality. I haven't really seen anything that knocks my socks off, but Nanguang is probably the best of the bunch. (www.nglbg.com) They've got some really nice-quality lights (both in construction and output) with good color rendering. I'll try to get in touch with them to get more specifics later.

Hey if you stop by the NIkon booth and can take a couple nice pictures of my Iceland 4K video playing there it'd be super nice!

Arri sky phosphor lighting.

Cineo lighting booth.

Okay, here goes…

The Cineo stuff is amazeballs. Their TruColor HS is beautiful, and has some serious punch (about 2-3K equivalent). The TruColor HS retails for around $4200. The smaller Maverick and TruColor LS units are in the $2K-3K range, depending on how you kit them out.

Their Matchbox 3-light interview kit (with case, stands, and lights) is a really nice package. It retails for around $2900, but packs a punch in a really small kit.

The Matchstix lights look really interesting also. They're "stick" lights (similar to the IceLight), perfect for on-camera, interviews, car interiors, etc. They range in cost from $180 to $499 depending on which size you get.

As for the Arri Sky Panels, the S60-C is the flagship model. The "C Series" is fully tunable in terms of color temperature, with adjustable minus and plus green adjustments as well. It's the light you want when you need flexibility to match just about any lighting scenario. The S60-C retails for around $6250, and the S30-C should be around $4500.

The "RP Series" are the remote phosphor units. These are much better for controlled lighting situations or studio use. They're not as flexible as the "C Series," because they use the phosphor panels to control color temperature. The S60-RP retails for $4500, while the S30-RP retails for $3500.

Cheers!

Have you seen anything from a price point similar to the Nebula 4000 that looks promising?
Thanks!

Honestly, I haven't seen anything like the Nebula 4000 at a price point that looks competitive. From what I've seen, they're the best price/features balance out there right now. But they are listening to what we want, and are developing new products that they'll be bringing out in time.

I'll keep looking.

There are a ton of ultralightweight cameras like BM micro, Sony A7S, GH4, GoPro, etc. But we have no quality lightweight fluid heads for cameras weighting less than 1Kg ! It's a real dearth in the market. Always the same old Manfrotto crap. I know Really Right Stuff made a nice head a couple of years back, but still too heavy/tall and wonder has anyone come up with something new for this expanding market? Could you be on the lookout for this?
What's up with Bright Tangerine as well?

Okay, yoclay my friend. Here you go…

I stopped by the Really Right Stuff booth and checked out the FH-350 fluid head. It's buttery-smooth, and pretty small, but at $1,780, I don't really think it's a "player". It may also still be too large for what you want.

There's a company here called E-Image, and they've got a nice little fluid head in the 706H. I couldn't get any pricing information, but it might be worth checking out.

But I have to say, the home run of this search for me was the Libec ALX-S8 system. The S8 tripod head is a well-built, decently-small fluid head with great motion, and it's $250. But the best deal is when you get the full ALX-S8 package, which includes the tripod head, a well-built tripod, AND a slider, all for $900! The whole kit has a well-thought-out design to it, and feels well-built and ready to work. Highly recommend checking that out.

I went to Bright Tangerine, and the big news there was their two new follow focus systems. They're coming out in 4-8 weeks that look pretty amazing, but they're evolutionary, not revolutionary. One of them is a single-wheel unit that will retail for around $1400, and the double-wheel cine version will be just over $2K.

Affordable tripod heads in the 10kg range that actually work? Manfrottos systems aren't that satisfying unfortunately... any new releases, new companies in that regard?

thanks for doing this!

Stefan,

See my post above to yoclay about tripod heads. I think it might apply to what you're looking for.

Thanks for this. Perhaps I missed this but - any simple portable and small 4k recorders for GH4 or A7S. Simple - no screen required. 10bit HDMI in. Affordable SSD or latest fast SD card. Prores HQ. Looking at Blackmagic Design or Atomos. Around about £500. I would buy in a heartbeat.

Or

A very high quality portable realtime hdmi downscaler from 4k 10 bit 4:2:2 to HD 4:2:2 if such a thing is possible witout any aliasing.

I haven't seen anything yet, Henry. But I'll keep looking!

Those are pretty impresive. 1Kw equivalent, 95+ CRI, tight LED spacing ( should be a lot easier to diffuse ), separate control panel for $600.
Yes, they're great solutions. Had the chance to hangout with the guys at Aputure last Thursday night at DTLA before they headed out to NAB, they were providing sneak preview to their VS3 field monitor and DEC wireless ff system along with their latest LED panels which can be daisy chained to be channel controlled by a remote (no need to individually dimmed or color balance) . The DEC wireless FF was very impressive and great solution for any single shooter 3-axis gimbal operator.

Ill check out Aputure in the morning. Must not have seen their booth today.

I'm not seeing any of these items listed on their web page. All new stuff, I assume? Stephen Mick - can you find out more about release dates?

Just found this regarding the DEC FF System. Stephen - would love to know a release date on this one especially!

Thanks Stephen, you are my new hero.
I suspected the RRS was great but still a little big.
It looks like the E-Image head unfortunately has a payload range of 3-8Kg. So won't cover the smaller cameras.
Good to know about the Libec, but unfortunately its not clear what it's payload range is at all...

If you walk by Video Devices, ask if they have any plans on supporting the FS raw on the PIX-E so it would be possible to record 4K (as ProRes) from the FS700...

Hey, guys! I'm a bit exhausted right now. (Being your ***** for a day takes a lot out of a man.) But I'll try to address any other questions you post tomorrow if I can.

And I'll make a few more trips around the floor to see if there's anything I missed.

***** out.

Okay, for tomorrow, I'll still be your *****. But you'll have to tweet what you want to see to @LandmineMedia. I'll try to respond more in real-time from the show floor.
