NAB 2019 rumors (and releases)

I think my first NAB was possibly '91 or '92.

Well then you may have seen me in the Lucasfilm booth with Editdroid. I think it was '91. This thing called Avid showed up and I knew we were toast. There are several postings on forums that say Lucasfilm sold Editdroid to Avid (true) and that Avid turned Editdroid into the Avid (false). Avid came up with their own ideas and blew the Editdroid away. They may have learned a few things from Editdroid on how to make Avid more editor friendly, but I think that's about it.

Wow, uncompressed encrypted HDR 4K wireless video for under $4K, I didn't see that coming this year!

I knew they had been working on it, but I figured it'd be next year or much later this year before we saw a finished product ready to ship(not that this one is shipping, yet...).

My first NAB was '99. I'd hatched a scheme to buy a Media 100 non-linear edit system that I planned to rent out, pay off and then use for cutting reels and my own projects. My goal at the show was to meet with the reps and work through a configuration for my system, for which I was budgeting $20K

At the show Apple lifted the curtain on something called Final Cut 1.0, which did pretty much everything the Media 100 hardware and software did and then some...for $1000, no special hardware needed.

Needless to say, I never thought about Media 100 again (they went bankrupt a few years later). Also, it's quaint to think that Apple used to be able to make major product announcements that took everyone by surprise.

I had just built a 40K Media 100 system the year before.
Then we became FCP 1.0 users.

Today, even with a few FCPX systems I've moved to Resolve and shooting everything in Braw.
Fell in love with track based editing all over again.
And now Blackmagic has taken that role of major announcements that take people by surprise.

I used the Media 100 back in 97’ to cut my first short. Had 99GB across ten 10GB drives.

My first NAB was 30 years ago, 1989. Here is a scan of the daily newspaper I kept, and a random ad from it...

Back then, everyone wore suits or at least a tie.

You couldn't take pictures in the hall.

HD was big CRT screens and tube camera prototypes without a final standard. Mitchell Camera still had a booth. There was no scrappy prosumer video crowd. Everything was "Big Iron"... Sony, Rank Cintel, Ampex. Avid had a booth for the first time. "Non-linear Editing" was the Montage System, a multi-betamax tape based NLE if you can wrap your head around that.

I've missed a few NABs over the years, but have been to a good 20 or so. Seen many trends come and go, watched HD vanish for a few years before finally landing for good. Saw the year of the dot com's with companies that only lasted a year. Good times.

Going to be on the show floor tomorrow, still valuable to go because you still can't touch a tripod or mess with a new light over the internet... :)

Regards,

Stop by Tiffen for the ASC panel, i’ll come say hi!

Seems one of the biggest nuggets is a camera grip for BMPCC4k....not that that there's anything wrong with that.

I think it’s a good solution also. Can see it being very popular. I’m quiet interested in their new dedicated Resolve Keyboard also.

Not sure nugget applies, it's pretty large. And if you care about standards, attaching a rod system to the bottom now requires 19mm or 18mm Studio due to the height added from the battery pack.

I think I may have used a thinner battery, even though it would be a different type just to try and keep the bulk down. It is anything but pocket now, should have called it compact.

But for many people this may be the solution they were waiting to have.

Given this approach to (DSLR) camera power has been around for years, and the original pocket had similar issues..would have been smarter to have the grip available from beginning.

In order to facilitate more options in post and reduce production costs. More info always better.

Yeah, shooting in HD is fine if you have a good enough proper enough production that you don't need to do any reframing or really mess with the exposure. On any indie production this is rarely the case.

Aputure's 300D II is probably the most exciting thing I've seen announced this year. If I wasn't already so heavily invested in HMIs, I'd order a couple of them.
