NAB 2019 rumors (and releases)

I think this is my favorite announcement so far. https://youtu.be/jmWPwfQneWk

SoarProd Video SPOILERS ;)

(It's crazy because the A7S III specs, while a few giveaways, are close enough to what should be possible within even a few years that it's almost believable. I wouldn't even be surprised to see an S2 in 2022 (or something else sooner) with SDI, 8K, RAW, internal 4K, high VFR, Global Shutter, Electronic VND built in, etc. That's an April fools joke that seems to teeter pretty close to imminent reality!)

A new Zoom F6 multitrack timecode recorder is coming, this is confirmed.

As is I suspect personally myself a "8xx" series from Sound Devices

I got an e-mail from Sound Devices with an announcement of Scorpio, which looks like a MixPre-D series recorder, but it has 16 mic/line inputs and 32 channels of Dante I/O, 12 analog outs... internal 256GB SSD, two SD card slots... not sure about price (didn't see it in the e-mail), but wow.

Received the same email. Looks like a real, full sized 664/688 type chassis that can be used for ENG/Live work. Multiple 10-pin umbilical outputs, etc. The next step/evolution from the 688.

So far, this is the only pre-NAB announcement that excites me in the least, I won't be buying one as I am not a pro sound mixer but wow, talk about some amazing specs.

The only one catching my eye so far is the AtomX SDI - $199 to add SDI to the Ninja V. I want to hear more as there are some questions regarding ProRes RAW and what it can capture, but it sounds like it should be able to capture the full quality 240fps output of EVA1 (just not recorded as RAW). If so, that's a huge boost for recording those sorts of high bandwidth FPS in a very compact form factor, for a cheap upgrade cost. Cool.

I would agree with your thoughts...they don't have many options for a drastic improvement with cameras being in control of their product, but I don't doubt there will be more systems with various outputs this year.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the FS7 do something with it.

Seems like the big improvements over Inferno are in the screen itself, yes? And then 4k/120? As I understand, my inferno already does 5.7k RAW on the EVA1 after the firmware update a year ago, so they're just officially pitching that this time around, but there's no increased functionality over it?

Isnt the multicam FHD function new? I know the Convergent product does that but I didn't know any Atomos products could?

Supposedly, Atomos was going to add multicam FHD switching to the Sumo, but I think the only camera that can do it is the EVA 1. Other cameras can display and record on the Sumo as long as they are gen-synced, but it doesn't allow real time recording of the switched input. I've used the Sumo as a switcher for my gen synced C300's for a live stream, but the package would be much more useful with the asynchronous switching. I just read the announcement and it appears that Atomos is finally adding the feature to the Sumo. As with all things Atomos, I will believe it when a see an actual working firmware update loaded onto my monitor.

And if you were, it would set you back $9K. I checked out the SD specs page and started looking at the manual. It's Impressive, to say the least. One thing I did notice, because I own several SD mixers including a 664 and 633, they only say "Ultra Stable Timecode" in regards to the Scorpion, which to me means they have parted ways with or for whatever other reason, are not using Ambient for the TC portion of the unit. The other 6 series mixer/recorders all have, and "proudly" advertise the timecode is by Ambient.

Very interesting, thanks for the heads up. Once the Scorpio is out, I'll probably review it and play with it just to hear what it's all about.
