NAB 2017 rumors?

Given the rapidly declining costs of manufacturing - i.e., the electronics - a camera, it's natural for the NAB to follow suit. C300 was huge in reality TV and now MKII has staked out a similar territory. Throw FS-7/II and BMD into the mix and you're hitting the $10,000 mark and below. The ENG style 4K camcorders are sub-$5,000 now and the 4K product prices will keep on falling before 8K will begin to take over the high end pro production. Within a few years, the lenses may be the hotter topic of conversation than the electronics because 4K will be essentially as commoditized as point&shoot now.

PS. No one replied to the "OPPO 5X zoom" thread but the technology in that camera just may kill both the low and the middle portions of the camera market. A smartphone camera with a zoom only leaves out the pros.

There are rumors of the impending D820 from Nikon. ~ 50 MPX sensor, no word on video yet. Sony's head of imaging gave an interview to Dave Etchell of "Imaging Resource" at CP+, where he said that Sony won't sell some of their newest sensors to the third party OEM's. Some took it as a sign that Sony won't make anything for anyone anymore. Others pointed out to the fact that it was not much different than a DP Review interview from 2014, where the same claim was made. Others still opine that Sony may not sell identical sensors to the third parties but will mod them on a customer's demand and point to the Fuji GFX 50 medium format sensor that was tweaked for/by Fuji in a different way than it was for Pentax and Hasselblad. I guess this could mean a Nikon without the crippled video features for its price range.

Or not. Sony's still likely to manufacture a huge share of what is used in both the photo-video and the smartphone industries. Panasonic and Samsung are two other major players there but have own strategies to pursue.

Panasonic and Sony will have their respective press conferences on the 23rd of April. Supposedly, there'll be new camcorder announcements - 1", MFT? I think it'd be cool if Sony came out with a fixed lens MFT unit. But they probably won't.

I hope I can make it to one of them at least.

I do not have a guess what will show up at NAB this year with regards to cameras. So much has come out in the past few years that who knows (if anything) big will emerge. I hope Panasonic shows some more P2 cameras as they have gone pretty prosumer in the past few years. Outside of that anything outside of the box is always appreciated.

Making a complete wild guess, but Sony F75 with 8K and free or paid 8K raw later. Panasonic just brought out the Varicam LT, the only real improvement they could give would be a big 8K monster. But maybe, just maybe, they will bring out a Varicam LT mini for high end "action cam" type situations (vehicle mount, etc.).

Reason I suggest that Sony will have an upgrade is that they need to test things before the 2020 Olympics where NHK has vowed to broadcast in 8K, not much time to test the waters and get bugs worked out. If Sony doesn't provide the cameras and connections, someone else (like Ikegami or Hitachi) will make them. Start with F75 and get the front end working, then build a modular (or maybe on the back of F75) transmission system to get the front end back to the control center (too big to call it a room or truck), this will almost require fiber optics, but they might be able to do short runs on triax cables (maybe).

Part of what made/makes their design/manufacturing/QC stumbles strange.

For the most part, the designs are excellent. There's always going to be something someone doesn't like. Sometimes a company needs to build something a certain way based on the overall functionality/design/price. So if the XLR ports are on top or the buttons are in a certain place, it's not because that's the ideal location but it's because they probably have to be there based on everything else.

QC is a separate issue. If you want quality control, you have to pay for it.

This is an "accessory year". Don't look for any big cameras being released from any of the big boys. Nothing big is coming from Sony in the way of new cameras. Nothing from Canon or RED. And I wouldn't hold my breath for Panasonic, either. Black Magic doesn't count in the real world of paying, professional work.

I don't know, man...Wikipedia says the following:

"Black magic or dark magic has traditionally referred to the use of supernatural powers or magic for evil and selfish purposes."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_magic

I think if you use it in the right set of circumstances, you can definitely make some money in the real world of paying, professional work.

Rumours and Sony typical timeline says opposite.

Actually, they want to do it for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Or, at least, the Koreans do.

The NAB "officially" starts a month from today.

Not positive, but I think LT stood for Lite, as in Varicam Lite. So you are thinking a Varicam Lite, Really Lite? ;-)

Plenty of cameras already fit the bill. Black Magic Pocket Camera, for one.

I would prefer the GH5 and Ninja Inferno with HDR Apple Pro-Res 10-bit 4:2:2 4Kp60 over HDMI 2.0.
