Nab 2016

So, the show will start on the 16th, but the exhibitions will only be from 18th forward. Can we expect new product announcements at the start of the show on 16th or two days after that?

That Monday is usually the big day...but as mentioned, we will probably hear more this week and definitely over the weekend. People at the event usually share on social media what they see/hear/etc.

kind of offtopic, but ive never gone to NAB before, and i'm curious if its worth it to stay in one of the hotels on the monorail, or if you are better off just cabbing it from a better hotel?

Cabs can be a long wait and very expensive. The monorail is very convenient.

Announcements trickle in in the preceding weeks, but should pick up steam in the next week. Expect Thursday, Friday and then Monday the 18th to be the big days. There are lots of announcements that get held until the day the show floor opens.

Last year, one guy kept tweeting/posting all of the Blackmagic banners going up on Sunday evening, which was pretty cool. Sunday will be a big day.

With social media and technology, it's getting more and more difficult to surprise at events like this.

Last year we released six announcements on Monday morning and added a seventh on Tuesday morning. As the guy who writes them, I can tell you that was exhausting.

I would love to hear about any new and exciting LED Fresnel type kits that are not ridiculously expensive and have decent brightness. Something like the kinotehnik practilite 602 but with more light output. It's hard to pay $1000 for something with a little less light output than a 300 W fresnel. Yep they always claim their light is as bright as a 500 W or even a 650 W but if you look at the photometrics as compared to a comparable incandescent lamp it's always much less lux in reality.

As far as cameras are concerned, I haven't heard much besides the possibility of a new Sony E-mount FF mirrorless or update to an existing line. Canon's also got that 8K camera coming.

Then there are the hopes for a Blackmagic Pocket II and C300 users are patiently waiting for 4K/60P. Canon 5D Mark IV and GH5 look to be a post-summer thing.

Maybe a new Blackmagic 6K camera.

I still want to believe there will be surprises, but I feel like this year will be more of a display of new releases that aren't widely shipping yet:

URSA Mini 4.6K, RED Raven/Scarlet-W, Varicam LT, Hasselblad H6D, Lytro's Cinema Camera, etc.

Asides from the two ARRI pages that don't mention what might be on them (though I doubt it's the 4K camera people are hoping for) there doesn't seem to be anything else big coming.

The new ARRI with a new sensor and 6K+ res is next year's NAB not this. Don;t expect anything but firmware updates and small bits from ARRI this year. Next year is theirs.

I won't bank on any new S35 cameras from Sony or Canon neither... The F55/F5 successors are NAB 2017.

Where did you hear about this?
