Nab 2016

C'mon, man, don't cruelly toy with us like that :)
I only posted because people were indicating that they didn't think there would be anything significant this year. I know there will be. Why have an NAB 2016 thread more than three months in advance if you're not going to play the anticipation game?

Will Puppet Mitch be there?

You got it. Anything in particular?

I plan to attend, however, I would say that Sennheiser news would be useful to many. New microphones, new headphones. They will probably have an product response to RODE's recent wireless entrants into the marketplace. Sound Devices may have some new products coming out in response to the ZOOM F8 that recently hit the streets. Audio Technica has a great mic listening booth/display. Lectrosonics may have some new wireless products to talk about. In the Lav and over the ear mic departments might want to see what Sanken, Countryman and DPA are touting this year. K-Tek, ORCA (if they are there) and Rycote could be looked at. Finally, as touched on RODE will probably have some interesting annoucements that would target many who come to DVXUser.

BTW, Stephen I really enjoyed the DVXUser / REDUser meet last year. One of the highlights. Got to talk to a good many talented people from REDUser. You and Terry Nixon were gracioius hosts. Thanks!

I'm thinking of trying to put another meetup together this year. If we can line up a few more sponsors, I think we can make it happen.

I would like to see an Ursa Micro. Don't know if the heat would allow the same sensor but I think they have moved beyond their design oddities from the first generations. A s35 chip with a body about the size of an FS5 would be interesting.

I would also like to see an f2.8 24-200 (FF eq.) constant powered zoom to be in the mix. Too bad there is not a universal power connector like on the broadcast cameras to encourage third party lens creation. While zooming during shooting is not always a priority, having a one-lens video camera-esque solution is a priority to me. I hope the industry moves in this direction away from the DSLR approach. The DVX200 is a start but I would like a stronger attempt.

Just wondering; if you know and/or are able to share, will any of these products be available immediately or just announced?

Both, although I cannot officially speak for anyone but Convergent Design. But from what I am told, there will be stuff available immediately and stuff that will announced and then shipped at a later date.

I am pretty sure the Evil Puppet Twin could divulge all sort of privileged information without any fear of repercussion.

Anything new that pushes current tech prices down is very welcome. I feel like we live in a time of abundance. The last 6-7 years have been so transformative.

The big possible announcements probably have to do with 8K capture. There's been an F65 replacement that's being talked up, with a new 8K sensor. This seems likely, something taking the ergonomic lessons of the F55/Alex body and applying it to a flagship Sony camera, with newer sensor tech and a better workflow. An 8K Canon C500 Mk2 has been rumoured, though it seems much less likely since Canon's roadmap sounded to be much longer. Would the C500 Mk2 make sense as a higher end cinema C300 mk2? I'm not sure. A different, cinema, body from Canon would be interesting though, and on brand alone would catch on more than the Varicam 35.

Arri recently released a paper on how judging what counts as resolution is difficult, and it has many more factors than just pixel count. I think they're not going to move onto a 'proper' 4K sensor anytime soon, it may be that they don't see the value in losing dynamic range for a small increase in resolution. It may be that the tech they need hasn't appeared yet. The SXT is a pretty recent camera as well.

My guess is with A GH5 being announced at NAB or before, and it will be able to do 4K 60p out in 10-bit 422 in which they have reached out to Convergent Design to have a corresponding recorder that works with that signal... and on the unrealistic side sending out a raw signal to an external.

Reading that the 1Dx mkII has on sensor ADC makes me think that a C500 mkII featuring a similar sensor, meant to compete with the Varicam 35/F55 class, might be on the way. They're already mass producing a sensor of this type, and Canon is extremely slow when it comes to certain technological innovations, they spend a lot of time vetting things (which is why I figure the C300 mk2 and C100 mk2 are a bit under specced.)

I would love for a Canon 1DC mkII to be announced at NAB this year.
May be a pipe-dream but likely would really tick a lot of boxes that I'm after in a camera.
If not, I guess I"ll go back to thinking of ways that I can afford the Raven.
