Help me evaluate my MysteryPrime! After a sufficient number of responses I'll let you know what it is. The full resolution photos derived from the CR2 files are below. FWIW one seems more contrasty while the other resolves better shadow detail.

The mysteryPrime is 50mm, the 28-135 kit lens was set at the 50mm mark. Shutter 2500, exposure was f5.6, ISO 160.

Links didn't work for me, but based on the 2 other grabs you posted I say the 2nd one looks better, but it's also a tighter frame and has a better bokeh, whereas the first shot has more DOF so things don't look as creamy I guess.

Sorry, I broke the links...however, there will be a new mysteryprime revealed in the next 24 hours.

The first was a zeiss pancolar 1.8 vs the 28-135 kit lens. weren't you surprised?

The top image of the purple flowers is not good for me to compare with as you are focused at different distances. It would be good to see that same shot re done with identical everything so we can judge bokeh.

The bottom one of the bike is easy - mystery prime wins by far. Just look at the chromatic aberration from the kit lens (veritical beige plant stem frame left) plus the colors are more natural and less pumped

Also look at the rusty brown tail pipe of the bike - 28-135 adds a great big purple splotch, prime has it too but faint. Maybe a tiny lens flare

edit:
BTW - its not hard to beat the 28-135 kit lens, its one of the worst kit lenses and is beaten by the 28-105 kit and the 18-55 kit

Comparison
28-135 f3.5 to 5.6 kit versus 18-55 f3.5 to 5.6 kit from the rebel

LINK

28-135 loses against the rebel kit lens, get the prime dude !

Good catch. I didn't notice that big purple splotch on the exhaust. Thanks for playing :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Definitely not a Nikkor PRime, or it too would have purple fringing all over the place.

It does, however, look like an old lens. Definitely isn't a Zeiss C/Y prime or it would be warmer, unless the photos were corrected to match.

Not a Takumar or it would be a bit more muted, lower in contrast than it already is.

Is it safe to say that its not a popular make nor model? Maybe a cheapo Sears lens?

It's a popular make, a 135 2.8. I'm curious to know why you would call it an older lens? Sure it's not a zeiss-like 135 2.8?

OK, it`s the Nikon/Nikkor 135 2.8 - I have the same lens and love it!

Yesterday I was in a Shop for lenses here in Nagoya and I saw a 100-270 Canon lens - sold as a kit-lens togehter with the kiss4 (the rebel/550D or how ever you call it).

This lens had a very good IS!! And it was cheap! I was really impressed...
