Daomay, you've got a special talent . 10 months working with the camera? Please tell me you were already a professional still photographer or similar. I thought I was pretty good at this before seeing your work! Excellent frame composition and camera movement.

I wish I was a professional still photographer mate. I love film and I was one of those freak that would just watch how people do things and I would spent hours in front of TV rewinding my famous movie and go through each frame and the composition carefully. I sometime would take a snap shots of the footage and try to recreated the same look with my own tool even if it is with my shitty camcorder before the FS700. I refuse to move on to the next shot or technic until I am fully happy with it. When I see a movie I like I dont very say wow that was a great film...I alway ask myself why did the director made it great. Director or Video Photography who are good at what they do don't very have the time to teach most of us how to go about our own style or further develop our skills...They work speak for itself and with they work I just copy they technic, once I kind of figure how they went from A to B. I just go out there and SHOOT hehe. Eventually once you become good at something you will have your own style. Thank you for the compliment. Good luck with your film.

You're very welcome. Are you still working with the kit lens as your signature says? I had the lens for a week or so (sold it) and don't remember being able to get the kind of shallow DOF many of your scenes have very easily.

Beautiful! Though you've worked hard at learning on your journey, I think you have serious natural skills in you!
Enjoy the journey!!!

Thank you Chuck. I think working hard is one part of it. I think it to do more with how I just love to film stuffs and keeping it fun and enjoyable. At the moment I am stuck as to where I should go with my skills. I want to do more personal then pay job. It is so hard cause my wife want me to help her with the business and spent less time with my camera.

Now I have the Sigma 17-35mm f1.8, Carl ziess 50mm f1.4, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 (heavy mother) cause I am more a run and gun type. Havent use the Kits lens for a while now.

Hi Daomay,

I saw your video of your son on MUPC, and I really liked your visual style! I'm currently producing an independent feature film and am looking for a cinematographer, and was wondering if you would be interested in joining our team?

We're scheduled to shoot for 10 days in and around Melbourne, 13th Sept - 23rd Sept. This is actually a feature-length film, which we intend on sending around the international circuit! This is a high calibre script and I believe it has the potential to do well.

This is a low budget production, and no one is currently being renumerated on the team. However, if need be I could offer you some payment for the project, or a % share in the film.

The greatest incentive to come on board this project is to work with some really great people. We have secured a phenomenal cast, starring the likes of Dean Kirkright, Jeremy Kewley and John McCullough. Jeremy Kewley is set to play a major role in the upcoming Underbelly T.V series!

If you are at all interested, please get in touch with me ASAP and we can discuss this further!

Warm regards,

I got this email this morning. I am not sure if I am ready though! Should I do it cause I am nervous as hell. It might be that opportunity of a life time where my journey very start with this feature.

Great work Daomay. Enjoyed watching all the videos. What a gift for your kid. I'm about to grab 2 of these for my company real soon and I can't wait. My mind sees life in slow motion so I can't wait for my journey to begin. Few questions if you have a moment...

1) Did you take the job you mentioned above?
2) Is most of your work for these videos hand held? Do you use a rig of some kind and if so which one?
3) Are you cropping the video in post for that more narrow/wider-screen look?
4) You've mentioned PP4 on occasion, but I'm curious...take your video "Happy child happy life"...is that using PP4? And can you talk a bit more in detail about any color grading you did to that particular video in post? I love it.
5) What frame rate are you shooting these videos at (if they vary, take then the Happy Child happy life one)?
6) Was all this shot in Australia?

Thanks again for sharing your rather personal journey with this camera with everyone. Keep it up.

I am happy to answer your question Trex, FS700 is a great camera.

1) No I didnt take the job because I wasnt sure if I was ready yet.
2) Yes, Most of my work are had hell. Have learn to to use it without any rig cause I wasnt able to afford it when I started off. Now I do have rig. Some how I am back to handheld.
3) I edited all my video in Premier CS6. In the FS700. It allow me to have the marker while looking at the small Screen. I just use that as a guide.
4) I only use PP4 to shoot my video with sometime I use PP2 when shooting at night. I havent very play with SLOG2 yet because I am still mastering my framing and rule of third. As for grading I use 3 colour correction in Premier CS6. If I get lazy I sometime use Black Magic Lantern call MOJO.
5) I only shoot at 200FPS for all my video. I can do it at 240FPS if I set it to NTSC but I am in Australia....so it is a PAL region. I get 200FPS.
6) Yes, All my Video are shot in Australia.

I am alway happy to help and share whatever information that might help you decide on your journey. Without the help of some of the wonderful people in this forum I wouldnt be where I am today. I hope you the best of luck with the camera. As for shooting film I have been getting a few bit of email people asking me I would like to DP for people. When the time is right I am sure to jump ship but for the time being I am just happy to shoot what I see that is beautiful.

Regards,

Daomay
