My First Music Video

James in HD

Active member
I had to re-post this here since no one was looking at it
in the other section.

Facts:
$200 budget
24 hours to shoot & edit
Use Canon XH-A1
Use Final Cut Studio 2

Please give me some feedback. This was my first music video and I feel
it came out looking how I wanted it to look. Some shots turned out even
better than I expected. But fellow videographers make great viewers.
And with hopes can help me get better.

(oh and I'm in the band as well. I make all the music and writethe songs).

Thanks!

Hey Multi talented James
Just watched your video. Nice work.
Now was that 24hours in one whole day or 24 hours spanning over a couple of days? Why the pressure ?
The black and white was a pretty bold choice.ANy chance of seeing it in color. or at least a few screen grabs.
As an editor I thought the shot 2.43 should have been the opening shot. Not that the opening shot was not good.I also like the S 4.59 it tells the viewer something about the moment ,time or place.
A few cuts where a little to hard for my taste. I dont think the motion trails or frame blending effect suited this video.A little bit more slowmotion would have been better to create the timelapse effect. Now I enjoyed the bathtub shots but the first one I think felt more like a pose.
The shots of the little girl feel genuine did you shoot them for the video or are those old shots that came in handy ?
Overall there are good shots in there and the edit was pretty good (considering the 24 hrs).

Good job ,the big girl looks hot .

Thanks.

It was 24 hours from start to finish.
Started at 2pm on Sunday, and finished by 4am on Monday morning.
I could have done color, however this was the way we as a group
wanted it. And the little girl shots were of my neighbor's daughter
and were shot on the same day.

I will try and do some screen shots for ya. How would I grab those?

Yeah man I don't why I wrote screen grabs was I thinking of crabs?Don't know. :)

I'll be looking out for those grabs.

not bad for 24 hours. Where in Minnesota are you from?

nice choice on the actress as well, how'd you get so lucky? haha

We are located in St. Paul. I own Battle Creek Films and I do
most of the commercials for Comcast, Wedding video's, and from
time to time I do short films. Well that is where I met her (Kirsten).
She did a short film for me, several commercials, and voice overs.

Since we met she moved to Mississippi, but she will travel to work
with me anytime. I keep a good relationship with everyone I meet in
the business.

And thanks!

hey James, i really liked the look of the video. very gritty.

just a noob question, how do you achieve the "fast moving" effect?

I have seen that in may clips but never quite figured out how it do it.

thanks,

-krish

If your using Final Cut, just right click the piece you want to
speed up or slow down, and change the speed. 100% is normal
and what you were watching in my video is 1000%.

Thanks

thanks yep. The seem to work on premiere pro as well.

James there were some really nice, interesting shots in there. Very provocative.

I didnt like the chorus shot re use a great deal. I think the opening sequence needs to be entirely recut, assuming those extremes in contrast werent in the original footage. Just so blown out. If that was your intention, you achieved it. But I didnt feel it helped a great deal.

May I ask why you cut it in 24hrs?

First Thank You for checking it out.

The chorus shot was only reused in the 2nd chorus. The 3rd chorus
was an all original shot. And it was my purpuse to over expose it
and make it look in and out of focus. The song is about a person
being in and out of focus and not happy with what they see.

It was for a contest here in the Twin Cities. We had 24 hours to cast,
shoot, and direct a music video. I took 1st place in said contest out of 87 entries.

Again Thanks.
