My First Card Failure and Lost Clip Disaster!

We should be cautious if someone (from Transcend competitor) might come here and badmouth on Transcend SDHC. Just two days ago, never heard Transcend SD card had any problem, all of a sudden, problem sprouts out like a spring from the ground.

I have, but only the one from Taiwan, As far as i know the Chinese is safe... then again I don't use transcend but was looking to get some (i'll wait a few days or weeks to find out more about this problems)

i found it nearly comical that right after viewing this thread for the first time, my card lost all my footage for the first time ever. wish i was lying about this...

I just bought an HMC150 today, which comes with a 16GB Transcend memory card. Panasonic is having that special bundle package offer. Do you think there might be a connection? Should I be overly-wary of this "free" card I'm getting from them?

I got mine..but they gave me a panasonic. Why do you think your getten a Transcend???

So with Joey we have SIX members with failing Transcend cards. I'll add that my cards are not mounting consistently, though that's far from a total failure.

I'll see you guys on the thread 'Best SDHC Card'

Seems like the Taiwan models are more recent which is why we are just 'now' having problems. Plus no 1 person bad mouthing Transcend is the same as multiple reports from many members.

Is the consensus still that 'Taiwan' cards are the only Transcends having problems?

I hate to say it but brand doesn't necessarily equal reliability when it comes to commodity semiconductor items such as memory chips. Many manufacturers are in with each other - example - at least when I was last in tune with the market Panasonic, SanDisk, and one other company I can't recall were all in together in the SD market and all used chips from their jointly owned factory. Other "manufacturers" purchase their chips from foundry factories which by design supply multiple companies with essentially the same product. Transcend is one of the few that actually manufactures their own products, but at the same time, also supplies multiple other companies as they operate as a foundery also. This means your brand 'x' could very well be a transcend (or other foundry company's) chip rebranded. Definately not going to argue that one true chip manufacturer is not more reliable than an other, but I will argue that the brand on the plastic packaging may not necessarily mean that the chip inside was made by the selling manufacturer. This is why I have always been a fan of purchasing memory based upon specifications rather than brand.

I couldn't find the post to save my life but I'm almost certain I remember one instance of a Panasonic brand card failing on some one. If anyone feels like digging it would have been between April and June, I think.

Also this Transcend 16GB of mine has no manufacturing company anywhere - I can upload a well-lit screen grab perhaps. I got it from Amazon bundled with a horizontal SDHC USB reader. No problems yet, although I don't use it super heavily.

dug it up i think...

Iam having problem with a panasonic class6 16gb. The card is corrupted. The first time it happen, only one little file was corrupt, everyother files was ok. But this time its a 24 minutes interview that is currupted. When iam watching the clip on the camera, the camera give me an error at 17min and ask me to turn off the camera. Fcp freeze at 75%, and I cant copy the file on my computer. Iam returning the card and getting a new one.
I manage to capture the file with the 'logging' feature in the log trasnfert window using the timecode before and after the corrupted data and I lost 3sec of the whole footage. Thats not bad but it suck

I am curious if anyone reported failure from Panasonic SDHC card? Anyone?

I had a new Panny class 6 card that would not mount/format, etc. When I was testing it before a shoot it gave me the 'check card' message of death.:kali: When I finally tried moving the safety switch back and forth, making sure it was all the way to one side, it worked fine. No problems since then.

BTW this was the 16GB card that Panny sent me for buying the camera.

Taiwan cards bad , china good cards , vietnamese cards love u long time :)
Everts, was that supposed to be funny?

I rotate six 16gb transcend cards. I've only shot about 50 hrs worth of footage so far and haven't experienced any problems EXCEPT for the one occurence of noise in two spots of the footage during a 2 hour long continuous recording of a concert (which I believe has been discussed in other threads). All the cards are made in China.

It might be interesting to do a poll to determine any trends in these card failures. Anyone out their interested in setting it up?

Possible questions

What brand card failed?

What size and class was the card?

Where was the card manufactured?

Did the entire card fail or just a clip?

How long was the clip that failed?

Did you check record and playback prior to the card failure?

Any other suggestions for questions?

One general suggestion I have is try to avoid shooting long clips if possible. If your doing an interview try to stop and start the camera in between questions. I know if your shooting a long ceremony its not possible. The more you stop and start gives the camera an opportunity to give you a warning.

Data Recovery Companies almost always work

Data Recovery Companies almost always work

The data recovery companies can almost always recover the files with the exception of the last file.

The question is who is going to pay for it.

It cost $1,600 to recover a Panasonic 32GB card that was corrupted where nothing else could read the card.

So, I am saying all is not lost except for your money.

Maybe some kind of business insurance, i know they have insurance for errors and omissions!
Could that cover it?

Good idea... Id leave it up to the clients... all of our contracts should have a disclaimer for this issue anyways.

Since hearing about card failures I am now checking playback on my first clip on the cards and also whenever I have time thru out the day. Check the gate.
